Agilent KeySight Authentic GPIB to USB Adapter and some comparisons to the fake ones.
Because of the fake GPIB adapters I thought I would do an unboxing of an authentic one and also show some differences between a real one and a fake one that I had ordered before this one.
You can see more pictures and read more about these flod of fake adapters on the EEVBlog.

Called a foampack, it is a plastic bag containing a small 2 part mix of polyurethane foam, and it simply is used by cracking the inner glass globe, or by using a spray nozzle to inject the foam into a bag. These thenm are quickly placed in the box bottom and sides, and then the box is closed and sealed before the foam finishes its expansion and cure. This then fills the bags and makes a form fitting shock absorbing housing surrounding the contents. Put too much or use too many and the outer box can burst open releasing a mess of foam.

+SeanBZA +SeanBZA When I did a search in it before I found some machine that injected the foam. It showed you placing the bags in the sides, then it pumped in expanding foam until you stopped it. It reminded me of the way to out foam insulation in walls that are already sheet rocked and plastered. Sounds like both methods would work. That reminds me, I need to buy some of that non-conductive expanding foam in a can now that I can see how inch air leaks by my switched and electrical plugs in the walls.

The real question is who cares. People are tired of being ripped off by US companies who massively overcharge for simple items like USB adapters. Seriously Keysight wants nearly $500 for a damn USB adapter. The vast majority of people buying these things off eBay are hobbyists using older equipment and they seem to work fine for that. In fact, from what I have read the controller, chips are actually older 2009 Agilent chips that have been scavenged. The bottom line is I've been using clones for several years now on several pieces of older equipment including an 8753c VNA as well as an Agilent service monitor, signal generator and spectrum analyzer and they have operated absolutely flawlessly. To be honest, I would have felt like a damn moron if I had spent $500 each on these from KeySight. If you're willing to spend $500 to appease your ego when a $50 device would otherwise work then I guess the old saying " a fool and their money are soon parted" fits the bill.

Q:”The real question is who cares.” A: The people that are told they are buying a real one at a used discount, then found out later they were lied to and ripped off with a fake one. I think they care. And this is why I mainly did the video. Some sites (eBay) and countries laws (UK) won’t let you ship a counterfeit back to the seller, but the seller still needs to refund the money. This is to stop fakes and false advertising. ‘Seriously Keysight wants nearly $500 for a damn USB adapter. The vast majority of people buying these things off eBay are hobbyists using older equipment.” True, and I have talked with Keysight on this topic trying to get the price to come down since all the new meters have USB built into them now. I’m sure they made back the development and design money on this by now since it’s such an old design. It wasn’t even theirs, it was HP that created it to begin with. “and they seem to work fine for that. In fact, from what I have read the controller, chips are actually older 2009 Agilent chips that have been scavenged. The bottom line is I've been using clones for several years now on several pieces of older equipment including an 8753c VNA as well as an Agilent service monitor, signal generator and spectrum analyzer and they have operated absolutely flawlessly.” That’s a matter of opinion if you read the thread I listed in the description. Some have had issues and failures after a few months, most after a year, other have had compatibility issues, and certain communication protocols not working correctly and VISAA bus issues. But did you pay for those fakes when you could have maybe received one for free? ‘To be honest, I would have felt like a damn moron if I had spent $500 each on these from KeySight.” And I would have felt the same way, and it why I was looking at NI ones also. But they are also flooded with fakes that have different problems, different quality. “If you're willing to spend $500 to appease your ego when a $50 device would otherwise work then I guess the old saying " a fool and their money are soon parted" fits the bill.” I’m on a budget and far from being a fool. Just because I’m showing a real one, dogmatic assume I paid for it. I never said I paid full price for this, or anything near full price, so I guess I’m not a fool. Thanks for you comment’s, and thanks for watching, Scott

Gadget Review Videos the fact that you were using a real Agilent adapter had nothing to do with my comment. I just assumed you worked for a company that had purchased it. I personally don't know anyone other than businesses who have bought real Agilent adapter. Oh and just about everybody knows that the ones on eBay are counterfeit. I mean seriously anyone's smart enough to operate and understand an Agilent VNA has got to be smart enough to realize there's something fishy about a $500 adapter selling for 50 bucks on eBay. I actually got my counterfeits for free. I guess you could say I scammed the scammers. EBay's policy is that you don't have to pay for counterfeit. In fact eBay will directly refund your money and then collect it from the seller. So you're guaranteed to get your money back and you're not required to ship the items back. In fact I'm told it's illegal for you to ship counterfeits back to the seller because it's illegal to put a counterfeit in the mail. As such eBay does not require you to send the counterfeit back to the seller. I bought 4 of the Agilent counterfeit back when they were $150 a pop. A day after I received them I reported them as counterfeit to eBay. Along with an email from keysight confirming it. EBay immediately refunded my money and didn't require me to send the counterfeits back to the seller. I've done the same thing with several thousand dollars worth of counterfeits coming out of China everything from Hakko soldering stations to consumer electronics. EBay doesn't even flinch when I report an item as counterfeit they just give me my money back. I guess you can just call it a form of poetic justice.

Yea, I did a whole thread on the eBay policy on EEVBlog about this. But they made me work with the seller first who wanted me to ship it back. So I had to wait until 10 days lasted before eBay would get involved. Maybe eBay want to put some of the work back on the seller now days. I did this with the Hakko FG-100 when I received a fake one. It’s only illegal to send back fakes in some countries, not all of them. I don’t think the US has anything on this, probably why US eBay and US amazon have more fakes then other country sites. Then thread I wrote doesn’t encourage people to scam the scammers, but I see how it’s a form of poetic justice. Its more of what to do if you get a fake, how fakes affect the world economy, and ebays policy with my personal experience testing the policy to see if they would honor what they say. Nope, I don’t work for a company, I was told I can’t work so I started to build a lab for a new hobby. I consider myself early retired with health restrictions for now. Let’s just say I worked something out with keighsight for the real one at not extra cost of the fake that I bought from an amazon store. The amazon stores are still running, so I guess they didn’t find what they were looking for in the fake unit. Yea, I know I was smart enough to figure it out, but never used a GPIB adapter or the software before. Just wanted one for the used Hp34401A I picked up on eBay. So even smart people new to the hobby might not know the are fake. I assumed they were used from companies that updated the 34401A tomthe new meter when the 34401A hit end of life. So part of the reason for the video is some people starting in the hobby may not know they are fake. And some people found out after watching the video and thought they had a used authentic one until it started having issues. Be carful with some of that fake Hakko soldering stations, check the ground and wiring in those. I’ve seen some really shady ones. Scott

I'm not paying 800. I just can't do it. But do the drivers on keysight work for the fakes because I do not own a computer with a rom drive

Yeah, ive used that packaging before.. its a binary mixture that comes in 55 gallon drums, the machine mixes it together when filling the plastic, its quite interesting stuff to work with. But if you get it on you during the process, it burns lol, and doesnt come off easily if at all depending on if its on clothing or skin. Works VERY well though. Anyhow, i appreciate the video as ive been looking to get a GPIB adapter for a bit now..

It was defiantly an interesting packing, seems to work great. Maybe overkill for this GBIP adapter, but I’m sure they use this with the scopes and other high end equipment. I might find out soon, thinking of getting a signal generator. Well for a decent one it will only be a little more to get the keiydight 1000x series oscilloscope with the wave generator and other things included like hardware decoding. It will be interesting to see the big difference in performance with s Keysight 1000 series low end VS a Rigol 1054Z with all the software licenses. But the Rigol is still mostly all software functions, not dedicated hardware decoding for IC, SPI and other things. I’m assuming if I buy one it will have the same packing foam. Thanks for watching, Scott

Well needless to say this was going to be returned. But Agilent wanted it to review and compare to see what software it was running. Apararantly you can copy the name, the look and all because it's over 10 years old? But the software is not allowed to be copied? I gave it to them with the understanding they would take care of the stores selling the fakes with their legal department. After that I was cut out, no replies from any emails and the store still run. I think it's running someone else's old buggy code he developed so maybe they can't do anything legally? I'm going to start contacting amazon since I gave Agilent/keysight more then enough time now and I know amazon will close the stores for selling fakes. I guess I'll have to do what I thought they would want to do, but they hadn't done anything yet and people are still getting ripped off. I don't care who's code it's running, Amazon and eBay still don't allow fakes to be sold.

I managed to get a full refund from the seller so I suppose i shouldn't grumble. It still annoys me Ebay seem blinkered to this sort of practice. The GPIB does work to a fashion but flags up a few errors now and then. Agilent won't be getting hold of this one then! All I need to do is buy the VEE software now.

Oh, I forgot to mention. All the CDs with the old 2009 IO library's are scratched. I think on purpose, they are probably bad CDs from something else that they just labeled and packaged. The sellers of the fake one will tell you to just download the lates software. I saw your video, same 2009 date code, serial missing to cert, cert looked photo copied. If you tried to register it, it would have failed or already been registered with that serial. Looks like the same fake one I had received. So you got full refund and didn't have to return it? Their is a thread with a lot of info on the fake ones on the EEVBlog. I replied to one of your viewers with the URL in your video comments.

Great video! Have you considered investing in a lavalier microphone? It's an easy way to step up the quality of your videos.

Hi, thanks for the comment. I'll let you in on a little secret, the channel was started with an iPhone. But since then I have stepped things up dramatically as you can hear in this video when I moved my lab. Even the camera in this video is gone now, the cannon vixia is good for outdoor and far away scenes, not so good on close up shots. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnazqYGnbrxopauIhen I did this lab update without the new mic system and just the phone again, you can hear the difference.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIuyhXhmq7KEpKuHo any recent video in this lab has the new cameras and Mics, pre-amp and more.I did recently decide to start building more batteries and decided this was safer in the basement working with lithium batteries. But I also picked up a new camera and lighting for the basement, waiting on a cable to test different Mics for the basement setup. So the audio might be a little different if you watch a basement battery bench video, but I'm working on changing that also. And I now do more post editing adjusting audio levels for a standard level on mostly all new videos. Some one off random videos when I'm mobile might not be adjusted, those are probably the exception.I used to use a wired mic and it likes to get in my way of reaching for things when I was doing a lot of 3D printer testing mod parts and add ons. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpaxmHicl8mdqbs But always open to other suggestions to improve videos when I can afford to.Thanks, Scott

Proof, what proof are you looking for? If I was a drinker I wold say 90 Proof. Or are you looking proof that the one I have is a real one from Keysight, or proof that the other one was fake? I dont want to show the receipt for the one from keysight, but when I mentioned I ordered it directly from KeySight, I meant I called KeySight up, explained what happened and ordered one directly from them. Not a re-seller or anyone on ebay but from keysight. If you looking for proof of the fake one I had returned it by the time I did this video, but I had some pictures on an EEVBlog thread you can see. To help identify fake ones this thread has a lot of clues and ways to identify a fake one on the EEVBlog. www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/flood-of-new-agilent-82357b-gpib-usb-adaptors-on-ebay-the-real-deal/msg840094/#msg840094

Their is so much differences on equipment, software, libraries and how people use these adapters. Some run software that I can't afford like BenchVue (full version) or national instruments, and others create Python scripts for raw data to be organized later or graphed out. But doing a video on how it works will start a lot of questions that have already been answered on the EEVBlog, and most of the people using GPIB adapters know more about the tricks and scripting. I would search in the EEVBlog to find more information for what you might want to use a GBIP for and how. But I can't fit everything into a video on this topic and would just raise a lot more questions that I wouldn't know the answer for.
