We are building a "Barn" house with the downstairs ceiling being corrugated tin. I am going to try brushing our toilet cleaner on sporadicly. Thanks for the demo.
@reneeryals33863 жыл бұрын
Curious about how your ceiling came out. I’m trying to do the same thing in a game room. So for mines not coming out too good. I will try another piece of corrugated tin, this time using the toilet bowl cleaner. Previously I you was using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide solution. The rust seems to just wash off. Any other suggestions would be great.

Great video, thanks for sharing, can you put something on the galvanised sheets that would make it turn green. Can you add chemicals/patina to the galvanized sheets to make it turn green-ish {like when copper turns green}? Thanks again.
@AppleValleyFarmGA6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That's a great question about the colorization on the patina. If this were copper...yes. But being steel, I really don't know. All I could do would be to Google it and see what I could learn. If you do that, definitely share what you find...I'd love to know! Sorry!

Need to clarify, do you need to let the muriatic acid sit on the steel and then sprinkle the Lysol bowl cleaner on OR do you wash the muriatic acid off THEN sprinkle on the Lysol bowl cleaner???
@AppleValleyFarmGA4 жыл бұрын
Let it sit.

How did you get that rusted design? It’s quite uniform. Mine isn’t. Some spots have more rust than others so I must be doing something wrong. Maybe the amount of time? Thank you for the help!!!
@AppleValleyFarmGA5 жыл бұрын
It's just a random "pattern". Definitely, time makes a difference though. The longer you leave it on, the more pronounced it will be...at least until the chemical reaction runs its course.

Where do you buy your sheet metal, can't seem to find anything around my house. Also I put the toilet bowl cleaner on and it didn't do anything. Does the temperature have anything to do with it?
@AppleValleyFarmGA4 жыл бұрын
We got ours at Home Depot. Strange about the TB cleaner. It should work. :( Temp shouldn't affect it.

@@AppleValleyFarmGA Some toilet bowl cleaners are formulated different. Get basic formulation, not the peroxide 0 bleach formula.

So I got a sprayer for the acid since I was aging 28 large corrugated steel and lightly sprayed peroxide for the rust effect. The next morning the metal is getting chalky (white film) do I need to clean with water more to stop this or other suggestions?
@AppleValleyFarmGA3 жыл бұрын
In my exerience with it, I rinsed everything with water to stop that process. The white chalkyness seems to be normal.
@AppleValleyFarmGA3 жыл бұрын
So when you say you sprayed peroxide...at what point in the process did you do that? I didn't use peroxide in mine, so I'm trying to make sure I know exactly what you're doing.

How do you clean the glass container that had the acid in it safely?
@AppleValleyFarmGA4 жыл бұрын
If you're old like me, you'll have to think WAY back to high school chemistry. ;) Baking soda should be a great neutralizer for it...speaking as a layperson of course. When you add the baking soda to the muriatic acid (or hydrochloric acid), it results in plain old salt water and carbon dioxide. NaHCO3 + HCl = NaCl + H2O + CO2. But STILL be super careful. Hope that helps.

Do I need to do anything different, with regard to the amount of muriatic acid, if my galvanized metal box doesn’t have a shiny coating ? Thanks for the demo; you made it look easy.
@AppleValleyFarmGA6 жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware of, Norman. Just be careful, whatever you do. The Muriatic Acid is just another name for diluted sulfuric acid...very caustic stuff. And...it IS easy! :) Thanks!

Can I seal this after the aging process, it's going to be turned into a table top.

Absolutely. We like using a Wipe-On Poly. Works great for this!

Yes this is awesome! I'm going to buy some corrugated galvanized sheets only because also I couldn't find enough scraps already rusted to do my project. So this will work on corrugated also is that right? Some one told me to just buy rust spray paint and spray the rust on. But then i'd still have that new look and I don't want that! When you drip the lysol on what is your thoughts on just painting it on hit and miss like?? I love your master pieces. I'm thinking brushing on the lysol will more like make lines up and down. I'm putting this under the double windows in the living room about 3'x 20'. Then stain a maybe 2x2 piece of wood to match the windows that are all framed in. I've never done anything like this but I know what i'm wanting so i'm trying to learn. What is the size of the sheets you used? I didnt no I could buy them like that. I may just go with them instead of corrugated. Would be alot easier. i'm hoping to put some farm house look in my living room. Good Job you need a part 3 show the finished job. Thanks Diz
@AppleValleyFarmGA6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Sandy. This process will work on any galvanized metal. As for the rust spray paint...um...no. Like, no no. :) No, that would look...unrealistic, IMO. Brushing the Lysol on would definitely have a different effect, but I'm not sure what it would look like. But I think that's worth trying! I'd love to see the results. The sheets we used are 3X4 ft, I believe. You can do this! I know it! :) Be sure to share some phots. And I'll definitely try to work up a part three. THANK YOU!
@jeffwilkes92956 жыл бұрын
how did brushing it on turn out?
@AZTechLabs3 жыл бұрын
you've dissolved the zinc (galvanization) off to expose the steel underneath.
@AppleValleyFarmGA3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Then we accelerate the "rusting" process on the unprotected steel.

Do you use a sealer of any type after you are finished? We are going to use on the ceiling in a bathroom.
@AppleValleyFarmGA5 жыл бұрын
We do, Meagan. We like Minwax Wipe-On Poly. It's easy to use and dries fast. I like the gloss, personally, but any sheen will do. Available at any home improvement store. Hope that helps! :)

Hydrogen Peroxide makes rust instantly a lot faster process longer you leave it on more rust you have. HP on after Muriatic Acid.
