Health care as a senior on a retired income is very expensive. We pay for our Medicare every month, our supplemental insurances and often ALSO for our out-of-pocket medical costs not covered. Most of HAVE saved for our retirement years but the money we saved is all to quickly gone especially if we had had illness and could not work a full 32 years or if we had children and educated them. Heaven forbid if we got divorced and lost one-half of our assets. Imagine knowing that our IRA and retirement savings will be gone before I am age age 80. And even worse, when my 79-year-old husband with cognitive decline and mobility issues needs to go into a care center that center will take his SS and his pension leaving me with $850.00 of my own SS per month to live on.

Elder care in the USA is bad. I'm 78 and have had 2 small strokes. My Christian neighbors neighbors have to be begged to hear me. So much for them being Christians. Even my son wants me to pay for his gas to come help or to see me. 100 miles round trip. I'm supposed to get 10 hours a week from the state of Idaho because of the strokes but because of my SS and partial rr retirement, I have to admit pay 85 percent of the costs of the cars. No help from the state. Medicare leaves a lot to be desired. I pay almost a thousand dollars a month for my and my wife's supplemental insurance. Medical costs in the US are twice as much as much as the rest of the developed world and the care is ranked the worst. Do your your research if you really care.

I’m so sorry to hear about your strokes but you can’t expect strangers to provide care for you. They have their own responsibilities and struggles that you probably don’t know about. I have elderly friends and will absolutely help when I can, but I cannot be a caregiver. I have a stressful job and two elderly parents of my own. They both have health problems. Am I supposed to drop what I’m doing and help someone who has extensive needs when I do not know them. Unfortunately, our system for elder care sucks and it unfairly burdens families that are already struggling with many other challenges. Also, I don’t know your son’s situation but 100 miles round trip is a lot. That’s how far I travel to visit my mom. I never ask her for money because she doesn’t have it. But also, what kind of relationship do you have with your son that he’s asking for gas money? From what I see here, it looks like you have high expectations without having done the work to build loving and kind relationships with others.
