I wouldn't care if the buses were made in 1987 or 2017. Age doesn't really matter just as long as they're maintained well.

Sometimes the older ones COULD be more reliable if maintained. They didn't have DEF, regen, EGR crap etc. They simply ran unless there was a basic problem. This newer stuff has EGR failures, wont regen, electrical issues, gotta go into them every other day with a laptop. They are catching up to cars with the emissions but that stuff will shut it down or derate if any sensor is unhappy.

For my area, we still have a bus with the older CA plates on it, I think it's a 92. I also know we have some mid-late 90's buses as well, likely be gone by 2020 IMO. And also a sister one has a 2000 Freightliner bus, that got a new paint jobs on the rims just a year or 2 ago. Likely not going to be out until 2022 likely for that one then.

They can be really dependable to the District if they are Regularly maintained and kept in tiptop shape which is kind of hard I guess when you’re running a very large fleet which is I guess where the problem is the size of the fleet which is negatively impacting maintenance capability

Bus no. 3785 with over 500k miles and still going, impressive! One of my train pals has an old short bed Chevy pickup with over 700,000 miles! The reason why it has so much, well he does a lot of driving, but had the engine rebuilt at least once and must really keep up with other maintenance! I like old things and when they work, I'll still use it, regardless of age! I'm not that kind of person that keeps up with the times. I upgrade on my terms and not technologies terms or the other BS. If bus 3785 is still with this district, keep it going. If you got rid of it already, most newer buses are computer aided and when something goes wrong, it conks out and needs maintenance. There are vehicles that date back from the 1980s, and even the 1970s still on the road because of perfect maintenance. There are even steam locomotives that a few date back from the 1890s that still run at tourists attractions because of great maintenance. They just don't make things like they used to and that breaks my heart of the newer stuff. I like old things and I won't keep up with the times. Some people say I'm living in the past, but I don't care. OLD STUFF ROCKS!!!!

My lack of concern about the bus… Not that I have kids of my own I’m just showing trust in such a machine to keep them safe to keep anyone’s kids safe it doesn’t matter how old is if it’s kept in good condition it won’t do the following •burst into flames. • do something similar to the previous point and end up on the side the road stranded. Sephira catastrophic mechanical failure resulting in loss of control and fly off the road.

In Maryland, where I’m from, as well as other Mid-Atlantic or Northern states, the majority of school buses are privately contracted. It’s mostly in the South or the Midwest where buses are the property of the school board, but there are still contractors in states like Tennessee and Michigan. Either way, most of us don’t think it matters. (But we in Maryland never hope to have shitty First Student buses running around.)
