The strongest Yugo that came out of the Zastava factory is the 230HP YUGO GVX-R. This Yugo was built in 1988 in Kragujevac by Zastava Yugo Motorsport. The engine was worked by the chief engineer at Zastava, Goran Pavlović, on the order of Konstantin Selaković and Jimmie Jumonville. The two compete in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) championship in the USA and are invincible in their class. It is interesting to note that several times they were even in the fight for the first place in the general classification where their competitors were Vipers, Porsches, Mazdas and other road eaters. This Yugo can compare in every aspect with Abarth automobiles, this car has been featured in foreign and domestic television shows and magazines. Now a little about the technical characteristics, which are very interesting. Vehicle type: front engine, front wheel drive, 3 door hatchback. Engine: 230hp @ 11000rpm, 4 cylinders in line, aluminum head, 1503ccm, 14.5:1 compression, two 45mm DCOE Webers, teck 2 ignition, belt driven single overhead cam, two valves per cylinder (intake valve diameter 40mm, exhaust valve diameter 34mm ), “Carrillo” rods, modified piston top. The engine is prepared by Zastava Yugo Motorsport chief engineer Goran Pavlovic. Performance: pulls 1.3 g's, max. speed 233.5kmh (145mph) with 3.07 ring/pinion, 0-60mph 4.3sec, 1/4 miles 12.8sec with 4.07 ring/pinion. Transmission: 5 speed gearbox, close ratio, limited slip (Alquati), quick steering rack (40% less travel). Front brakes: "Brembo" self-ventilating drilled discs. Rear brakes: "Brembo" drilled discs. Wheels: 7inch Panasport. Suspension: McPherson, coil springs, "Koni" shock absorbers, anti-roll bar. … And the interior is arranged according to FIA rules, so anatomical seats, safety belts, fire extinguishers, roll bar... This Yugo was mentioned 3 times in the SCCA "Sports Car" magazine, once in the "Auto" magazine and once in the newspaper "Vesti".

I had a red, with grey interior, 1987 Yugo, paid $6300 (that's Canadian dollars, probably like$4300 USD). Its top speed was around 145Kmh (about 90 mph). One day I was in a hurry to get to Montreal, so I left Quebec City and put the literal pedal to the metal. 140 miles later I ear a siren, look in my rear view mirror, its the police. I did get a ticket, he said I'm just going to give you a 125kmh ticket, because 145kmh ticket was like 400$.. cost me $150 + fees. I also got a ticket on the day I bought it... which makes me the first _and_ the second guy to get a ticket in a Yugo! ;)

I had a 1978 Chevy Monza from 1983 till 1992 with similar interior, as it aged the finish would flake off the plastic. So painting this Yugo interior would maybe cause more plastic flaking making it all look worse as it aged or it could hold it together as long as the paint worked well with the plastics. For me, I'd leave it alone, still keeping some of the car's originality.

Many years later I learn to drive in it and had many nice memories with it. Many speeding tickets too! On highway I was getting 120km easily and it was Koral 45 with Dinamit Blue 9C color. Very weird how I remember that, never needed painting, had galvanized chassis. Never had any problems with it and we had it for I think 7 years. Now I am in Canada and watching this video making me want to have one again. It reminds me on pieces of my youth between wars. Congrats on the new addition to your stable of weird yet interesting small cars. I was actually toying with the idea of buying a new Yugo way back in '87/'88, also looked at a used Renault LeCar, and a new Subaru Justy, but eventually the rational part of my brain kicked in and I settled on a brand spanky new '88 VW Jetta. Not sure if I made the right choice as it burned enough oil to kill the catalytic converter in less than 2 years, eventually the engine needed a complete rebuild, all under factory warranty thankfully.

It may have been a poopy Yugo, but it was entirely in line with my experiences with a similar Yugo about 27 years ago. Same color and everything. In fact...

About 20 years ago I saw a yugo at a pick and pull. Not one piece was taken off of it. When they first came out here in America I worked for a company that would install air conditioning in them. The “ Factory “ a/c kits were a joke. Even new they ran terrible and were noisey. But I really want one. If you get tired of it you can send it to me. I’m a professional auto technician by trade so it will be in good hands.

My 1986 is blue with the gray interior. It’s an awesome combination actually. The gray interior fits the Yugo well.

This brings back memories... Back in the day, I had a Fiat 127 (1975). An Italian version of the Yogo. All mechanics are basically the same. It was slow as F.... But we hack up a crashed Fiat Uno 1.4 Turbo, and through many long nights day a lot of headache, we finally got the engine and transmission installed. Boost pressure was slightly bumped up, and the final car was pushing about 150 bhp. Brakes was swapped from the Fiat Uno, so it had some stopping power. Car was fun, loud and made a ton of wheelspin.

It would be fun to see the SAAB 2-stroke engine in the Trabby. Depending on the availability of a SAAB engine, maybe a modern Rotax 2-stroke (or something similar) could work?
@MegaSockenschuss3 жыл бұрын
The classic and most common way to do it here in (East)Germany is (or was) the 3cyl Wartburg 2t engine. But I guess Saab and Rotax are way easier to come by in the US. Or he could go a complete other way, since the last produced ~40k Trabis had 1.1 Liter 4t engines... a little Rover V8 may be funny too. ^^

A little hint about the fabric dye: It needs to be ironed before the paint stays on permanently. If not (as it is with my Golf's headlining) it will come off by having contact with anything. Perhaps it's because I used the cheapest one on Amazon, but still I'd suggest that you think about this. If you find a way, please mention it in a video. Much obliged, Francis
