Actually Ermoupolis ... the main town beneath Catholic Ano Syros, was largely established within the last two centuries. It received refugees from various parts of the Greek world during the Greek War of Independence but grew mainly post independence. There was a conscious neo-classical bias in its architecture (as was the case with much 'high' architecture in the new Greek state. As such there is not much 'Venetian' influence here other than whatever impact the Venetian element may have had on neo-classicism. In many respects the older Catholic 'Upper town' (Ano Syros) retains many characteristics reminiscent of other Cycladic islands.

Loved this video! So interesting about the Catholics and Greek Orthodox celebrating Easter at the same time - together! Beautiful churches and amazing services. Makes me want to be in Greece during my Orthodox Easter. Also loved the video you did last year on Tinos. My cousin actually went there for Easter this year. Glad you got to celebrate with a local family. I also got the feeling watching this video that you are a Greek at heart!

What a lovely video, Tiffany. I love Syros. Your video made me very nostalgic to return. I remember the climb to Ano Syros so very well, the steps and the views. I also think I enjoyed eating there more than anywhere I traveled in Greece. It is silly to think you have a favorite island, but Syros might be mine. It is beautiful in a special way, and your video captured it well. I remember coming into the harbor on a ferry from Mykonos, and being so moved by the city is the light that I got off and stayed a night and day before coming back to Athens to catch my flight home. I didn't see many other tourists when i was there, and it was less expensive that Mykonos, certainly. So I appreciated that about it. Keith

I like how you embrace the Greek culture and are respectful of the traditions. I’m still deciding where to spend August 15th. I’ll be in Samos around that time, but thought about going back to Athens for it. I think you made a video on it. I’ll need to look for it.

Too quite, better in a Greek island, Tinos, Ikaria or Paros preferably. For all these islands the 15th of August is a very important celebration.

One of the best time to come to Greece is at Eastern period.Anywhere in Greece, you will feel the spirit of Eastern in full.Syros island is the only place on earth where Catholics and Orthodox celebrate together Eastern every year.I hope after 900 years of separation, one day we will unite together and celebrate the most important Holly Days of Christianity together.Cheers from Athens ,Greece.

Where in Syros does the ferry come in? I was thinking to get a hotel close to the area where the ferry ⛴️ is. It would be easy for me to walk to the hotel and then get back to the ferry when I am done with my vacation.

Nice video...however a lot of misinformation about Ermoupolis and its history . NOTE : Ermoupolis was not built by the Venetians ...but by 20,000 refugees ,many of them wealthy that arrived in Syros in 1822 from the destruction of the island of Chios, Psara, Smyrna and other Asian minor Greek communities by the Ottomans Turks .Only Ano Syros was built by the Venetians that arrived in the island in 1207 .
