For those of us who aren't up on their conversational German, including me, here's the "GOOGLE" translation for the author's note above: "An old SG whose electrics were in a poor condition has received a basic renewal, ie. completely new circuit, with two mini toggles for serial, split and parallel circuit, and a push pot for turning the phase of neck pickups. It was a lot of work to create and implement this circuit, and everything properly in the e-compartment of SG accommodate. The Push Poti had to be sanded a bit flatter, so that the lid is easy to close. The two holes for the mini toggles were already there, those were old youthful sins, something like that used to be done a lot, although it looks pretty neat, ......... but I would not want to drill holes in my SG ! ;-) The sounds are now very versatile, this one can screw a lot, and will always discover new sound colors." My Kudos to "AcysLounge ", GREAT DEMO licks!!! Will

Hey there, what Gibson pickups might you compare these to? I'm looking at one of the 550 mini's but shooting for a 490R sound, had a hard time finding comparisons or opinions on these.

@JohnRoberts-yh3ep 6 жыл бұрын
There isn't really anything in the Gibson - or anyone else's - line that is like the L-500. You can still buy them from the Lawrence family, sold under the Wilde brand. They don't advertise and they are made to order so it can take a while, but they are fantastic pickups. The L-500XL / L-500R combination will do anything, especially if you split the coils like in this video.
@GreekGuru74
@GreekGuru74 6 жыл бұрын
I have the 550 mini's in my '74 les paul. They sound amazing. Extremely clear and transparent no mud at all. Very clear defined low end, great string to string definition when playing chords, sharp top end with a ton of bite. You get the low end and fat beefy sound from a humbucker with the top end bite/spank of a single coil. You can dial out the top end bite by lowering the treble side of the pickup and rolling down your tone knob just a bit. They're very sesitive and respond well to adjustments whether it be where/ how you pick the strings, pickup height or volume/tone controls on your guitar.

@AcysLounge
@AcysLounge 4 жыл бұрын
An old SG whose electrical system was in a poor condition has received a complete overhaul, i.e. completely new circuitry, with two mini toggles for serial, split and parallel switching, and a push pot for turning the neck pickup phase. It was a lot of work to create and implement this circuit, and to store everything neatly in the SG's electronics compartment. The push poti had to be grinded a little bit flatter, so that the lid can be closed well. The two drillings for the Mini Toggles were already there, these were old youthful sins, something like this was often done in the past, but now it looks quite neat here, .......... but I would not want to drill holes in my SG! ;-) The sounds are now very versatile, you can do a lot of work with them, and you will always be able to discover new sound colors. Thank you, you had mentioned this before, I was kind of looking for a schematic explanation but I’ll try to figure it out, could you tell me what pots were used- 250 or 500k? ( tone /volume) and any specific capacitors? Which models are the Bill Lawrence? Thanks so much and great job on the pickups, best tones I’ve heard on KZbin for the BL pickups

One more question, at 5:23 after you pulled to out of phase, you make small adjustment I believe on the volume knob, and it seems to click and majorly change the tone, is that just a volume pot or something else? Sounds really nice, thank you

Gawd that was fucking awful. Pickups SUCK the big one, too bright, harsh and mids are non existent.Very unbalanced set of pups. You can't beat Alnico 2 PAFs for tone, for over sixty years they have been trying to top them and can't.

Bill Lawrence were specifically made for those who DON'T want PAF tone. Bill Lawrence pickups' website says he created this pickup's predecessor (the L90) specifically because back in the day, PAF was the only type of humbucker available and he didn't want that.
