I found her music watching the Netflix series Dark (I listened to “Familiar” 30 times over the same day I first heard it on the show) and have been in love with her music ever since. So much in fact it played a big role in inspiring me to learn to play piano. I’m still a beginner and struggle playing some of her music fluently with 2 hands but, omg actually being to play it all is a sublime feeling. With enough practice I’ll get there. I haven’t started learning it yet, but I have the sheet music for this song already printed. It makes learning an instrument so rewarding.

Agnes' ability to evoke deep thought and raw emotion with her music is a testament to not only the power of music, but Agnes' mastery of it. This song makes me feel very many things all at once, and it hurts, but in the best way. It almost projects a crystal clear picture into my mind of a specific setting and subject. Starting 4:27 hits something for me. I remember riding an overnight bus from the small mountain town in Japan that I'd lived in back to Tokyo for the last time and looking out the window and as this part came on we got high enough up the mountain where you could see over the peaks and the sky was just LITTERED with stars. The universe felt close enough to touch and this song, that movement in particular always brings that image back.

Wanted to share this festival memory, because I just shared it on my personal facebook as well. For me and my friends, Agnes Obel is one of those many artists and bands you know from only one song (in this case: Riverside). So when she was scheduled to appear at Rock Werchter 2014, my friends and me thought: "Well, let's watch this for at least 5 minutes to see if she's more than just that one song. And if not, there are other shows and artists to see". So we went in the big tent. We were there at the beginning of the show, and at the end of the show my friends and I still stood there, with our jaw very close to the floor. One of the best shows of that year, and one that is etched in our memory - probably for a long time.

And the people went into their hide, ay-oh From the start they didn't know exactly why, why Winter came and made it so all look alike, look alike Underneath the grass would grow, aiming at the sky It was swift, it was just another wave of a miracle But no one, nothing at all would go for the kill If they called on every soul in the land, on the moon Only then would they know a blessing in disguise The curse ruled from the underground, down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before The curse ruled from the underground, down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before Tell me now of the very soul that look alike, look alike Do you know the stranglehold covering their eyes? If I call on every soul in the land, on the moon Tell me if I'll ever know a blessing in disguise The curse ruled from the underground, down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before And the curse ruled from the underground, down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before

Lyrics: And the people went into their hide, they oh From the start they didn't know exactly why, why Winter came and made it so all look alike, look alike Underneath the grass would grow, aiming at the sky It was swift, it was just, another wave of a miracle But no one, nothing at all would go for the kill If they called on every soul in the land, on the moon Only then would they know a blessing in disguise The curse ruled from the underground down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before The curse ruled from the underground down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before Tell me now of the very souls that look alike, look alike Do you know the stranglehold covering their eyes? If I call on every soul in the land, on the moon Tell me if I'll ever know a blessing in disguise The curse ruled from the underground down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before And the curse ruled from the underground down by the shore And their hope grew with a hunger to live unlike before

@@Carambolero (her words) ..... Agnes Obel: I think it was a song that asked for the story. I felt like there was a story there as soon as I started writing it. The first thing that came out was “And the people…”, it just sort of came out. And I just knew that it was something that was outside of me. I was reading two books at the time and maybe that had something to do with it. One of them was a book about how we think and how we construct meaning and memory and the author has a great way of describing how we construct our own stories. We apply so much symbolic meaning to things. Humans do that all the time, it’s like the curse of being a human but also a blessing because a lot of beautiful things come out of it. We put meaning into random things. The other book was a diary and the author was standing between the old world and the new world and he was rationalising the meaning of the new world and longing for the meaning of the old world. But with the curse of modern life. So it was just what I had in my mind at the time.
