This week we have took a suggestion from one of our fans (Стефан Павић) to test an AGP and PCI-E version of the same graphics card head to head and see how they perform.
The cards of Choice are an XpertVision 6600GT AGP card and an ASUS 6600GT PCI-E card - Both 256MB

Makes me wonder what would it be like if AGP was still around. AGP 3.0, AGP 4.0 might have been a higher speed but most of all, *UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY* for all GPUs.

In the future please allow a little more time up on the screens to allow people to read. I missed some details here and there because the screens changed too fast. Overall though, nice job. I just subscribed 😀

I remember when this mobo came out. Almost bought it but ended up waiting for am2. First am2 I got was a Athlon x2 4600 paired with DDR2 800 Geil ram and a x1950 pro pci-e x16. Was a nice build for the time. Thanks for taking me back

I think the year was 2003/2004. when those cards hit the shelves of our beloved PC stores. They were categorized as a brand new nano architrcture accelerator using both passive and active cooling. Some models required additional power supply cable to be attached. Introduction of SLi by nVidia ment they declared a war on AMD (ATi as of 2004). Games like HF2, Doom3 and Far Cry were running smooth, but something new was approaching. Unreal 3 technology. Great video, never realised such small gap between those modes. Just another fancy package and there you go nVidia. cheers

Nice video! love these retro-hardware reviews. You got another subscriber! :) By the way, I have an old X1950 Pro AGP card, that uses a PCI-e to AGP bridge chip. That was a nice graphics card, and one of the best for the AGP bus.

Thanks for your support! I had an X1950 when they were about a year old to give my old Athlon64 system some more life! was a very fast card.

Indeed, it could run DOOM3 at high resolutions with high detail, and some other games from 2003-2006.

I just bought a PCIe 6600 GT to do a dual boot system hosting WinME and WinXP. The Intel 915GV board works under 98/ME and XP and you can use PCIe cards in 98/ME. I have a P4 3.2GHz and 1GB ram installed but I turned off hyperthreading in the BIOS otherwise WinME randomly crashes. I’m going to run some tests to see if there’s much difference in benchmarks and games between ME and XP using the same GPU. Might be a good future video for you to do?

I really enjoyed this it's not boring! I love the music by the way what is it? Also, a suggestion, I think most people would like it to be voiced over if you can or want to, just a suggestion :)

Well made video! Loved it. I gotta ask this why did you used dvi to vga dongle when your cards have vga ports?
@HardwareHackers
@HardwareHackers 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the feedback! Well spotted, actually no technical reason at all! most of the machines we test on that test bench use DVI so the dongle is always plugged in, its just force of habit plugging it into DVI rather than removing the adaptor and plugging it into VGA

We still have the motherboard so anything is possible, it would be nice to get the fastest possible AGP card to try it again its PCI-E counterpart, the problem is AGP cards are becoming expensive for the last ones as they are highly sought after! we found that even with the 6600GT, you could get a PCI-E one for peanuts as it was one of the early, lower powered PCI-E cards, but trying to find an AGP one was a nightmare, they were going for silly money, we eventually paid the price for one, and then ended up selling it on for twice what we paid for it only 6 months later! worth holding onto any you have and watching the price sky rocket!

I wonder how would be with faster cards and more games, example the Radeon X1950 Pro, Geforce 7950 GT, Radeon HD 3850 and HD 4670 (GDDR3 version)

We have often wondered this, unfortunately it's getting very hard to find fast AGP cards cheaply in the UK at least!

I just bought an NVIDIA GEFORCE 6600 GT for £14 going put it in my XP dell PC P4 2.4 ghz & 2gb ram if needs more power I have a 500 watt PSU to put in the dell precision 360.

power hungry cards back in the day! does the 360 use a standard PSU? its a while since I played with one! leave a little head room for a new CPU too if you upgrade :-)

This is comparison of two pcie cards, one of them has hsi-adaptor (pcie-to-agp), so performance difference is predictable, because card with hsi-adaptor has inevitably tiny performance losses.

3:16 and then even earlier, I see that bad cap on the PCIe card. you can't fool me! I really hope that was an in-parallel capacitor on that particular circuit. Any way to do a proper re-cap and then another test just to see if there's any sort of increase?

It will not change performance, even if you put best capacitors in the world. It will change only stability, and not always. The result can be only "cleaner" current, but it won't change performance on same speed. You can overclock usually slightly more with cleaner current, but not always.

the 6600GT AGP, as stated, has a AGP to PCIe converter chip on it - both cards will operate more or less the same because of that converter chip. gotta find cards that dont have that thing.

The test is not reliable, because "dual solutions" on same motherboards were never reliable. Also there were DDR1 and DDR2 combo motherboards. Or SDR and DDR1. You need to test it on both different motherboards. Asrock motherboards with these combo features were never too reliable. Good candidate is 865PE chipset with AGP slot, and i915P chipset with PCI express slot. Both can have DDR1 memory. You need to find two motherboards, that performs equally with non-graphic card performance tests (only CPU,FSB,and Memory test), and test it on these two with same CPU. Best candidate is i865PE chipset with AGP slot and socket 775, and i915P socket 775 platform, by using same Pentium 4 processor. Also, 3d mark tests are not reliable. You need to test in games.

AGP is better. I mean who would waste a PCIE slot for a 2004 mid range card? PCIE variants of older flagship carda are basically worthless.

This is not really related to the video but somehow I got here. I'm trying to upgrade an old Dell Optiplex GX270. I want to install an older low profile graphics card in ti. It has a AGP 3.0 and a PCI 2.2 slots. The PSU is 210W. Can anyone recommend a graphics card that will work on it?

nvidia geforce 6200 low profile agp card should work. About there the performance limit is anyway on socket 478. there is also hd 3450/4350 low profile agp cards out there if you cant find a nvidia 6200 agp card
@vesselinkrastev
@vesselinkrastev 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that! Most of the info I found points at the geforce 6200 as well. I'll be looking around for one of these cards and just hope that the PSU will be able to handle it. If not, oh well...

1. Text based narration is boring 2. If you use text base narration, time carefully. Some of the slides show up for like 2 seconds and i had to pause the video
