Getting ready to build my second and larger system. My first was a backyard 400sqft greenhouse and had a 275gal fish tank, bioflitration system, swirl filter, deep water culture and nft set up. My next build will be a 20x60' with 2 275gal tanks each going into a swirl tank, then bioflitration but one side will be deep water culture and the other will be Dutch bucket. The Dutch bucket will produce vegetables and I'll be able to control the nutrients according to their requirements. The other will be growing leafy greens like lettuce and kale. I plan on having one fish tank with tilapia and the other koi. I'll eat the tilapia and sell the koi. Can't wait to get started!!!

High levels of dissolved oxygen promote healthy root growth. ... When there's less oxygen in the water than there is in the plant, this reduces the permeability of roots to water, therefore reducing (even reversing) the absorption of nutrients. Levels of 8 mg/l or higher are generally considered to be good for greenhouse production and much higher levels, as high as 30 mg/l or more, are achievable and can be beneficial. If the DO levels are below 4 mg/l, the water is hypoxic and becomes very detrimental, possibly fatal, to plants and animals. This is the basis of success to hydroponics, aquaponics. Also, water temperature will play a major difference in those DO levels. The dissolved oxygen rather than those nitrates. As plants will take up the essential nitrates needed through the growth cycles.

Hm. So I have been taking water from my koi pond to water my garden thinking it is good for my plants. But it turns out that only the nitrates are beneficial to plants, and I might be feeding them ammonia and nitrites? Can someone help clear this up for me? Am I helping or harming? (It keeps my pond nice and clear without major water changes. I am mainly asking about the well-being of my plants.)
@PNH-sf4jz Жыл бұрын
I believe that you are helping your plants. 1) Some of the same biota exist in soils as in the mature fish pond. This means that the products from the fish pond are likely to be converted when they are poured onto the soil. 2) The water from the mature or cycled fish {koi} pond could be fed straight into deep water culture (DWC), ebb and flow or constant flow media based, nutrient film technique aquaponic grow-bed systems to feed the plants in any of those systems. 3) If your fish are healthy, your pond system is already converting the waste products through the cycle to nitrate: bacteria converting the ammonia/ammonium to nitrite (NO2-) and then to nitrate (NO3-) 4) You are probably now doing, in a batch process, the same as you would be doing by pumping the pond water through a growing media or system and returning the water, that the plants have "cleared" or "cleaned" of nitrate, back to your fish pond. I presume that you are occasionally topping up the pond from another water source. 5) What you are doing is likely to be helping both your plants and your fish.

I would want at least 6 inches of river rock holding that down, an autoflowering variety and a few good friend that know how to trim ... :-) The best thing about AP gardening is that it can be changed around to fine tune it so that it will work for any type of plant, as long as you know the needs of the plant. That said, you might as well throw a tomato or two in there as well for some gardening snacks along the way! May an abundant garden ease your pain as mine eases my stresses, blessed be!

@AgricultureAcademy3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sunil! Both Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter are classified as nitrifying bacteria, which are in turn both sensitive to light. Other factors like extreme temperature, pH and fluctuations thereof will also negatively influence the activity of the bacteria. Some research has indicated that the bacteria are more sensitive to light when they are suspended in the water, and become more tolerant once they have colonized an area. I have found an article explaining more about the effects of illumination on nitrifying bacteria if you would like to take a look: www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/jgam1955/30/3/30_3_151/_pdf Hope this helped!

How to build small aquaponics in slab area in measurement in Sft
@paznid Жыл бұрын
I have a fish waste pond that need to be filtered before its water can be reused. Can aquaponic serves as a bio filter for this? I'm thinking about a simple setup, like Kratki method (no pumps of any kind) floating rafts, resilient and vived plants. Thoughts anyone?
@PNH-sf4jz Жыл бұрын
Your proposal is challenging without any pumps and maintaining simplicity as the primary ingredient. However, I would think that using plants as an "aquaponic" or "hydroponic" bio-filter would be quite feasible. Some floating foam board rafts, using plants in netpots, floated on the pond. To minimise costs, the rafts could be made from recycled foam packing sheets from commercial enterprises, if you are close enough to a city where that type of material may be available. Another idea would be to make a raft of a rigid material suspended between two 4 inch storm water pipes of appropriate length, with the ends capped and sealed. Another approach would be to use rushes and other plants that can be grown in pots just below the surface of the pond. Without knowing the surface area, depth, an estimate of the water volume to be cleaned, the degree of polution and its intended use following "cleaning" or "filtration", it is a little difficult to make any more informed suggestions. For example, if the pond has been collecting waste for some time and If it is heavily fouled, it may be necessary to isolate and dilute a section of the pond at a time in order for plants to survive. Another consideration is aeration. You may find it necessary to add some form of aerator, even something simple, such as a wind driven "water beater". Neither plants nor fish do well without aeration.

Hello! No nitrates alone are not suifficient, but they are highlighted because of their importance in the nitrogen cycle, stemming from the fish waste.
