Story 1: So, first contact ends in a long lasting friendship with another species because some kind and a bit lonely diner owner took in a hungry bear-spider? I love it! Story 2: Hard to translate a name of a book into english but, there is a series, something around "Stars Are Cold Playthings" - puts us in a place of galactic newcomers unlikely capable of a certain type of FTL, as the only people who do not go brain-dead doing it. Turns out that it is due to us being a remnant of ancient interstellar empire who invented and biologically adapted themselves to it. Anyway, all planets in the empire are called Earth - the word being basically synonymous to "home planet".

@JMM33RanMA7 ай бұрын
@@RomanvonUngernSternbergnrmfvus There were attempts to corner the market in various commodities, including gold, corn and potatoes, some of which succeeded. Also, before the Fed and national currency control, dollars were issued by state and corporate banks [which system was used by Hong Kong even in the 20th Century], so dollars printed by the Bank of Boston would be almost worthless in states far away [and vice versa]. One of my history books had a photo of a signboard giving equivalent prices for various state bank notes. This looked a lot like the exchange signs I saw in Europe before the Euro replaced many local currencies. Besides, even after gold was no longer monetized in the US [the US mint still sells silver, gold and platinum "coins" as do some private mints], silver was. Bills had "redeemable in silver" or equivalent on them and I have some silver coins. Unlike other countries, the US doesn't demonetize coinage, so occasionally I still find an old coin in change. It is still legal tender at face value, as are some old notes, so the silver dime [10¢] from the 1940s that I found in change is still valued at 10¢ in circulation but might be worth several dollars to a collector, depending on date and condition.

I may know the [or one possible] origin of this story. It is [or was] a diner named Flo's, some miles East of Albany on I-87. The name remained, but Flo did not. My friends and I usually stopped there on our way to and from break because of its midway location and decent food at reasonable prices. We discussed the attraction of the diner to the truckers, whose vehicles usually filled the lot. In addition to our primary motivations for stopping there, they were likely motivated by the view...of the waitresses. This could probably serve as another SciFi plot to be called The Diner in the Heart of the Galactic Arm, or the like. Thanks to the author and the narrator for another fantastic story.
