Ever handle a friend's knife and just feel impressed with how it feels and the action of the blade? Then buy a new one for yourself, and the action doesn't feel near as good?
Just like new boots, knives need to be broken in as well. Here's a video on how to speed that process up.

Hello from the Deep North of Canada! I realy liked your video smooth fast and practicle! I am a neewbee sharpener and collector of diffrent knives from Surviving to Pocket knives and evetn all of ky knives have been disassamblied cause i love to see the diffrent mechanisms and styles of inside making! But i would like you, if you can, make a video about diffrent bearings, how to keep them in good shape but most witch side to put them back, depending of witch kind of bearings and how to oil them correcly! Thanks in advance for your great work and hope you will take in concideration my questions! Frank from the deep north!

Hi Franky! Thanks for leaving a comment! We're unfortunately on a long hiatus from making videos for the foreseeable future. But I can at least give some information. When it comes to disassembling knives, I recommend always noting which side each bearing came from and always keeping it on that side. I'd always avoid disassembling any knives that have loose ball bearings, getting them back together is too difficult. Of course, it's hard to know for sure until you take it apart. Ideally, you can find a KZbin disassembly video for your specific knife model to see if it has loose bearings. For oiling, I prefer the Quick Release Pen: agrussell.com/knife/Quick-Release-Pen-25-fl-oz--LAT-QROIL03 There are many similar oils, but you do want a high quality oil that's used for small mechanical items. For learning more about knife disassembly, I recommend checking out Nick Shabazz on KZbin. he does a lot of knife disassembly videos that are very informative. www.youtube.com/@NickShabazz Here are the tools he uses: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKOXiH-vl5aUZ7c&ab_channel=NickShabazz I hope that helps! -Jake

How do you break In a stiff detent? My civivi relic is absolutely atrocious in that regard. It hurts the finger and is gritty near the top. It also closes really smothly

Hi Honk, A good question! Ideally, you take it back to your retailer or manufacturer to see if they can do anything about it. There are a few ways you can do something yourself - but they will typically void any warranty you have and can really destroy your knife if you don't do it just right. Your grittiness will most likely be that it needs cleaning (could be something from the manufacturing got inside and is making it gritty. It may pass inspection, but then during transport little bits of debris might shake loose, etc etc and make it gritty). Get a nice lubricant that can push out dirt. Or take it apart carefully (I highly recommend watching a YT video for tips for taking knives apart, check out Nick Shabazz's channel, I believe he has a guide video) clean everything with rubbing alcohol, then a drop of lubricant on each side and reassemble. Options for a stiff detent: 1 - You keep working it in. Open and close it until the friction of the parts wears the parts down a little and it begins to get a little easier to open. You can speed this process up with some graphite from a #pencil. Graphite can act as a dry lubricant, but also adds just a little bit of faster wear and tear on it, hopefully wearing things in faster. 2. Soften the edges of the blade detent with a diamond file. Too much and you'll ruin the detent. 3. Push the ball deeper into your liner lock. You'll have to take the knife apart. Use vice grips or another press tool to press the detent ball deeper into the lockbar. Alternatively, find something that can focus some light hammer blows onto the detent ball. Pushing the ball too far in can ruin your detent action. 2. Reduce lockbar tension. The lockbar could be pushing the ball deep into the detent, making for a stiff opening. Take the knife apart, and bend the lockback away from it's inclination to reduce it's tension. The downside to this fix is it may introduce blade play or soft lockups. Those are your options. If you aren't really comfortable with taking apart knives, stripping screws, etc, I highly recommend you find someone knowledgeable to do it, preferably the manufacturer. Some people laugh at my cautious warnings but I've seen so many guys completely ruin screws and knives with improper driver techniques (pressure on the driver going to the screw is VERY important - ideally twice as much pressure going down as you are putting into turning the screw). There are a few YT videos floating around with their solution to lightening a knife detent - some may have some useful tips. I hope that helps!

Everybody on KZbin is an "expert". No, oiling your knife will not make it clean. CLEANING your knife makes it clean. Then it is time to lubricate. Oiling microscopic pieces of metal creates "mud". Mud is what happens as your lubrication holds dust, dirt, and contaminants of all types onto the knife, INCLUDING these metal particles. I'm sure Jethro here has good intentions. But this is NOT how to start with a new knife. Not even close, Jethro.
