I think it's best to balance it out between the guitar, amp and pedals because your signal chain is only as good as the weakest element in it. A cheap guitar will not fit your needs in terms of ergonomics, specs and reliability, the same can be said about a cheap amp (even though some cheaper solid-state amps are really good). That being said, i would go for a Friedman Runt-20 with a matching 2x12 cab (IRs and loadboxes are fine at home or if you have excellent monitoring and a tone guy who knows his stuff, but I'd still want to have a physical cabinet on stage with me as a live musician), a PRS S2 Custom 24, a set of USA PRS or Suhr pickups and spend the rest on pedals (you'll usually want those for most genres and Hunter seems to neglect that in this video). My reasoning is you really don't need a 100W tube head for most situations these days, the S2 is a USA built guitar with Korean electronics so in go the good stuff and with this setup i could rehears, gig, record, have top shelf sound that's in my head and not worry about any of the gear breaking down or acting out. If you record solo stuff at home and don't play live, just buy a really good guitar and go the amp-sim route. 120W Revv through something like a Focusrite Scarlett is a tragic waste of money and power, you'll get the same quality results with something like a Neural DSP or even ML Sound Lab.
@calebmunkirs96612 жыл бұрын
Since metal isn't most genres, the only pedals we understand are overdrive/boost and noise gate lol. But on a serious note a lot of people like a simple straightforward rig that can cover a lot but does it's own thing well too

The PRS and Neural Plugin is my favorite because it is essentially my rig right now....the plugins may not have the response of a true tube amp, but i don't have to haul around 50+ lbs of amp every time i move or worry about tube maintenance.
@valuedhumanoid65742 жыл бұрын
This is an easy question to answer. Plug a $18,000 PRS Private Stock into a Fender Frontman 10G, the amp that comes in the starter pack. See what kind of tone that gives you. Then take the Squire Strat that comes from the same pack and plug it into a Friedman BE100 and matching 4x12 cab and see what kind of tone that gives you. And there, you have your answer. The amp is ALWAYS your priority. A cheap guitar with a little setup, good strings and a good tuner can sound fantastic in a good amp. The reverse is never true
@277southtombob2 жыл бұрын
Honestly what I usually take to a gig would easily be $5k new. I usually take at least 2 guitars, a amp and my pedalboard. A couple of $1500 guitars (US Strat and a SG maybe) and a $1500 amp (Super Reverb for example) is $4500 alone and that’s not anything boutique. It’s easy to get a lot tied up in a gigging rig.

It was a fun vid. I would love to see you do an entry level BUT pro rig that could be realistically be used in a Metal band. Nothing like amps less than 50 watts that a Metal drummer CAN drowned out. Why not an $100 SM57 mic to save needing a high tech box etc. Even a usable attenuator is under $200.
@Pizvo2 жыл бұрын
I've played with some really crazy drummers and I've yet to meet one who is louder than a 20W tube amp with a proper EQ curve (mids, mids, mids...) trough a decent-sized cabinet. Power in amps doesn't have a linear relation to loudness, it's more of a headroom/compression thing.
@spencerharding59192 жыл бұрын
As a drummer for 18 on going years coming into the guitar world and having much fun. I’d like to say that guitarist playing their hobby or passion for more then 5 years they should have gear loud enough to play with metal bands and not be drowned out by a drummer. My last guitarist and many few past this other guy always brought lunch box amps and it was a joke for practice. Of course you’ll get drowned out using one 10... so I started playing guitar and I bought a 4 speaker closed cab 15 w amp and I’m sure all of them are jealous. It’s just how bad you want it is all it comes down to. And I’m not rich at all. Wish more took seriousness into their passions or hobbies and had realistic expectations. I also have marching band and jazz band experience so I don’t just bash my drums and cymbals. Hope this helps.
@Chord_The_Seeker2 жыл бұрын
If you want entry level, but pro, that can keep up with a metal drummer, you can’t go wrong with the PRS MT15. It’s labeled 15W. Doug Sewell, the guy who created the amp, says it’s really 17W. In this video the output power is actually measured at over 24W: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3mndZaajZqCl6s No matter how you measure it, it’s incredibly loud. If you have a decent cabinet I can’t imagine any drummer who could drown it out.

In terms of tone, you can get away with a cheap guitar more so than a cheap amp and speaker cab. $5000 is still a generous amount for a rig. $1000-$1500 for a great guitar (not sure what id get probably an Ibanez with bareknuckles or something like that maybe)and the amp and cab I'd go for would be about $2500-$3000 id think (Victory Super Kraken with matching 2x12) so let's say $4000, $1000 for pedals and cables is plenty to do a variety of tones....
