The purpose of the 340B program enables hospitals to stretch scarce federal resources to the most indigent ill population. Hospitals can only participate in this program if there disproportionately percentage is within a certain threshold unless the hospital is a Critical Access Hospital, the hospital has a contract with their state or local government and is a public or non-profit corporation. Therefore, a couple of ways hospitals use their 340B savings for are programs that help their incident ill population, patients that can’t afford their medication may get there prescription as a discount or sometimes free and also helps offset uncompensated care.

Thank you for this insightful video. I do have two questions though... Why will some manufacturers offer more of a discount than the mandated 13% for generic and 23% for brand? I've heard that on some occasions that they will discount at 100% for some dispenses (Source: Dr. Adam Fein) Is it because that 340b dispenses account for a tiny fraction of the market that they can write it off? Second question, aren't the savings that are generated by providers redistributed to patients who are underinsured or don't have any insurance at all? I'm not sure if I understood you correctly in the video, but I thought that was, more or less, the point of 340b contracts.
