Very nice. I've always wondered why audio manufacturers haven't hit on the idea of doing limited releases of popular audio stereo receivers from the 1970s - but with certain upgrades like bluetooth/wi-fi/streaming/remote control etc. When one looks on Ebay, and sees the kind of prices that mint vintage gear is selling for, it seems to me that the manufacturers are missing out on an interesting market segment. The 1970s had the coolest receiver aesthetics, and it would be fantastic to be able to buy a new Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer model that looks exactly like the original - with modern audiophile components, and a few upgrades like the one you've created here. Well done, and carry on.

Yes! Yamaha and Technics and JBL are starting to realize this and some of their new releases are like the old school stuff we love. Yamaha has one thats TOTL and has WAY too many features, $8,000 and made in Vietnam or Malaysia. If they made a decent looking one in Japan, it wouldn't even need to have many features. I am fine without a remote and bluetooth or streaming capabilities. People would pay $2,000 all day long. Give me a pre-out and 2 aux in, and mayyyybe a phono in, but that isnt necessary.

The truly high fidelity gear of the past, (most of what you mentioned isn't,) can't be built today unless the old components themselves can be manufactured again. That would cost billions. And modern 'upgrades' aren't really upgrades. They sound worse. That's precisely why the best old gear sells for so much. Modern gear is designed with a variety of test equipment and computer modeling. The old gear was designed with ears.

You've seen the prices on eBay yet you don't understand why they don't want to re-release those vintage components? I think you answered your own question. Why would they? It would devalue the ones from the past most likely Not only that but it would kinda take the nostalgia from the vintage pieces

Whilst practical, it's not a good idea to put an SMPS, a computer and Wi-Fi inside an amplifier like this. Especially that the nowadays common EMI sources were unknown or non-existent when this receiver was designed, making it a lot less protected than a modern appliance. The very least should be to use an SMPS in a metal case with proper AC and DC filtering, shielded power cables and a separate shield can to enclose the whole streaming board. Also, the Wi-Fi antenna must be mounted outside the case but even then it will surely still create interferences. I'm not saying that this mod shouldn't be done if somebody wants to do it, what I'm saying is that it should be done properly especially on such a fine piece of stereo.

Exactly what I was thinking linear psu and amp design and you stick somet that gives off Rfi and rf inside / a Smps screwed to the rear and the antenna positioning lucky if you got a signal 2 feet away after case is put back on. Terrible idea do not copy this folks.

I did the Arylic up2stream on my Marantz 2285B and ran it to my Tape 2 in the receiver and now I can Bluetooth from any device. What a great idea, followed your info, everything went super smooth. By looking at the receiver you would never know it has Bluetooth. I just received my second Arylic to put it in my Pioneer SX=980.The Marantz is pushing a Pioneer SX-9900 with a pair of McIntosh XR-7 on speaker A and a set of Pioneer HPM-900 on speaker B. Super hard hitting with separation of the highs and the best part, No distortion, Im running the same setup with the SX-980. I love the fact that you can control the stations and the volume right from your phone. Thank you for putting this info up for everyone to see. I highly recommend doing this to your vintage units, Its definitely an upgrade. Thanks Again.

he's pretty good but I wouldn't go so far to say very precise. he lacks some knowledge regarding wire gauging and some other things. I don't criticize but I don't want anyone to be misguided. he has a great mind for this but has a few things to learn which I'm sure he will be a quick study.

TIP: Use the whole tape loop of the receiver and connect the record to the input of the Arylic. This will allow you to control the volume of all sources of the receiver as long as you have the tape monitor activated. just one more wiring…

I bought a Marantz 2270 off eBay in 2000 for $320 (back when ebay had nice bargains from real people). It was pristine - still had the clear plastic protective cover over the front panel. I just had to replace a few bulbs. Around the same time I bought a Marantz 5220 cassette deck (not to listen to cassettes, but the large blue meters look awesome!) Then I bought a Marantz CD-152 CD player. I think that one is kind of rare because it has the silver-gold front panel that matches the fronts of the other units. Next, I found two Marantz wood cases on ebay that were in great shape. I probably have $900 into this set up, not counting speakers. Anyway, the idea of adding streaming is awesome. I don't listen to cassettes or CDs anymore, and FM radio has too many commercials (not like the 70's). My kids wonder why I have this vintage collection - to me these are works of art. I do have Spotify, so your project is on my to-do list and I'm anxious to get that Marantz sound going again!

Did the same thing with my Pioneer SX850. I have several of the Arylic Audio cards and even one of the cards w 50w amp built in. I used the Tape 1 in and out. The Arylic also has a Line In input. I can now play an album and stream it to all my other Arylic's in my house!

For the power supply you could use the Marantz PSU. You add a 7805 regulator and you avoid stuffing that transformer inside the amp.

As a demonstration of being able to completely integrate the board and power supply in the receiver, it was very nice (love the stand off that you made). But the antenna inside the metal box (you didn't put the cover back on), that stood out as, "Hmm...". What I was also thinking was you had that new audio board with USB and HDMI ports (and maybe other stuff), that's now unavailable, because it's inside the unit. I'd have rather had them outside the receiver, and accessible. Mount it in it's own box, with an external power supply (plugged into the switched outlet), and into the AUX input - and I think you have more functionality, with less work. FYI my Dad had a Marantz 2240 receiver. If I knew they were sought after, I would have tried to find a home for it, vs tossing it when my brothers and I emptied his house (something it in wasn't working).

I own two FiiO BTA30Pro units ($120 ea)...a small, well-built box (ALU chassis) with BT5.2, inputs for USB/RCA/Optical, and Receiver(RX)/Transmitter(TX)/DAC modes. It has excellent CODEC support (LDAC, AptX (HD+LL), AAC, SBC), a discreet Volume control knob, and easy to read indicative LED's to reveal color-coded status & CODEC in use. I spent about $10 for an aftermarket 12dB antennae, just to increase its range throughout the apartment. In the home office, I use this device to bridge (DAC) my PC source (FLAC files, Spotify, KZbin, etc.) with a vintage receiver (current favorite: Hitachi SR-903) and, for the family room, as a receiver to feed streamed content from my phone to a separate vintage receiver (another Hitachi SR-903). When I want wireless freedom, then I switch the home office BTA30Pro to TX mode and pair the device to BT headsets or earhooks (KZ AZ09 Pro's with Shouer S12's or other IEM's). This is a clean look and very convenient. No issues over the past year with either BTA30Pro...they work like a charm. I also use it with the FiiO app (Android)...an excellent app that allows for fine tuning, EQ, etc. This is the most versatile audio device that I own and I highly recommend it on the basis of price/performance/build quality/user experience.

I’ve had an AirPort Express hooked up to my 2226’s aux input as an AirPlay receiver for years now. But this internal solution would be pretty cool. However, they really should include the 5V power supply with the purchase.

Nice job AH. Nice clean look. I’d consider doing this myself but I cycle through about a half dozen receivers from Teac, Yamaha, Sony, Carver, and 2 Realistic receivers from the 70’s so hard wiring it wouldn’t work in my situation. I have an Arylic S10 and a Audioengine B-Fi streamer that do a good job hooked up to the AUX jack.

As mentioned in the video, just get a small bluetooth streamer and plug it into the AUX input of the receiver via RCA cables. Same result, way less work, may only cost a tad bit more. This is what I do with my Pioneer SX-680. I recommend the AudioEngine B1, which has great sound.

Clean install! Polish those Rca jacks on the inside and outside. Make them look new. This mod is the new LED fad. I compare it to a bluetooth turntable. I am happy with an external solution. Should put a lable maker sticker on it to indicate the mod and transformer for safety.

Awesome, and timely, video. Thank you so much for posting this. I just resurrected an old Sony reciever and want to stream music to the house. Adding ceiling speaker to old MK speakers to Sony so need BT or better yet, WiFI to the Sony. This Arylic device is the answer. I'm a Ham so poking around inside electronics is second nature. For an even smaller 5V DC supply you can use an Iphone cube power supply. I used one of those on my Fisher receiver to drive the coil of a 5V relay to replace the broken volume pot power switch with a speaker switch that could not handle mains power or inrush current. Works great! EDIT: Oh, by the way I wrote this before you finished the video. You mentioned the phone charger trick. I agree it could be cosmetically better to use your black charger unless the tiny phone cube can be completely hidden.

Nice work! It's very nice to have a wifi/bluetooth in the input selector of our vintage receiver. But there is a point that I got a little disappointed, the bluetooth codecs. If you use a receiver like this, you surely care about audio quality, as I've checked on their website, this device has only SBC and AAC. I think it needs some others Hi-Res bluetooth codecs like LDAC, Aptx HD, and adaptive, so it would be much better than already is.

I went the lazy route. A FiiO BTA30 Pro (~US$120) from AliExpress, with RX/TX/DAC modes. I also upgraded the antennae for another $12 with a 12dB that is about 13inches in length. The FiiO comes in a machined ALU chassis, so build quality is pretty nice. Has the RCA outputs to connect to the AUX on my vintage receivers (e.g. Yamaha CR-420, Pioneer LX-626, Nakamichi SR-2E with a Nelson Pass-designed amp, Sanyo DCX6000K, and Pioneer SX-82E...with its 21 tubes!). I liked the FiiO so much, I bought another. One for the family room, so that I can stream from the phone to my Pioneer LX-626 (the FiiO in RX mode). The other I have connected to my desktop PC and it operates in DAC mode, straight to the Yamaha or Nakamichi. I have splitters on both of the FiiO's RCA outputs, so that one or the other receiver can be used with ease. The nice thing about this BTA30 Pro is that it also allows me to go wireless while in TX mode, should I opt for Bluetooth with my IEM's (e.g. KX AZ09 Pro's BT5.2 earhooks with a set of either the Olina's or Shuoer S12's).

Good job with the DIY. Maybe you can also do the HDMI out connection to a TV...A similar thing was done and posted in youtube. Also, I pretty much accomplish the same thing [and also wifi connection] with the Google Chromecast Audio dongle. Uses native apps for the streaming and can control volume too. Can even connect to an external DAC via optical if you don't like the built-in DAC.

If you use the Tape input you won't be able to use an EQ with it. One of the best features of a receiver with "tape monitor". Also you will have to leave the receiver turned up all the time and you are just lowering the source with bluetooth. Pretty cool set up but I wouldn't want to leave it cranked all the time. The load is always there even if the source is quiet. 😊😊

Great video, pretty sure one of those ribbon cables you tossed aside at the start is meant to be used for line out as well. Redundant to the 3.5mm jack you had to get the right angle for. Could have used that ribbon cable and not bothered with the jack at all.

You can connect the 4 wire ribon cable to the output of your Arylic Up2Stream Pro and the input of your receiver by cutting it in half and use it instead of a jack cable. You will then have two 4 pin plugs so you can use one for input an the other for output.

I know this wouldn't make much difference, but the AC wires I would have twisted them. They run close to one of the amplifier boards. Could induce a little bit of hum in that channel.

Nice work! But what about the interference. The board is installed very close to the transformer, do you hear any humming in the speakers? Do you have stable connectivity with wifi when the metal case is closed? I would strongly suggest installing a surface mount ethernet jack and connecting the streamer with cable whenever possible.

Nice job, but the USB and ethernet port should be available on the back imho. The supplier of the board should supply a mounting bracket to a back plate on a device, and a template for marking the hole to cut.

Bought a sansui 551 at garage sale. Dirty put it on marketplace for $50 sold few days. Sell as is never plugged it in. Sold as is you plug it in. A number of people wanted me to plug it in. I suppose if it let the smoke out they would not want it

I have done a few similar modifications, often using the amplifiers own internal 5V rails. A cheaper option it to use a Raspberry PI W, with a DAC, with audio server software. Many of these allow for synced audio around the house. I would certainly move the boards antennas to outside the case, A) to improve reception, but as they are transmitting as well as receiving they may induce noise.

cheaper still is canibalising an old wifi speaker. personally I'd put the ariel outside, if the amps case is made correctly it should be a pretty good faraday cage. It's an upgrade I did to my Pioneer A-441 when I changed the caps and had to delete the balance control 😞

Have your tried A.M. radio after you installed it? Does it wreck am reception? I’m doing a similar thing on an AM radio and I used a phone charger for the ac to 5v dc power supply. If my board is out of the set it, it plays ok if I put it under the chassis, it wrecks am reception. Curious if the power supply you used is cleaner or if anyone has used a power supply on an AM set?

@@AHFixIt You are welcome. I appreciate you taking the time to film and describe what you are doing. I imagine filming while working on equipment makes the job much longer to perform. I have learned a lot from you and a few other stereo equipment repair channels like Xraytonyb, Vintage Audio Addict, and Trevor’s Bench. I just started working on equipment myself and am chipping away at purchasing more test equipment.

First off, flipping sweet. Second, how do I learn what is what when it comes to electrical components like this? Restoring, adding in what I want, etc?

Does shorting your WiFi output damage the unit? That may be OK for the Stereo sound but probably not preferred for the remote unit. How does the antenna reception work once you put the metal lid back on? For AC safety it is not only the power capacity but the voltage breakdown yo need to be careful of. A low insulation may leak out to other wires. Good job at keeping Ac on the AC side and DC on the low voltage side.
