Don't fixate on ESR as the "holy grail" of caps . . . We didn't test that for decades, and nothing djed because of it. Far more critical measurements on coupling caps like this are capacitance and leakage, since the purpose of this device is to pass the signal, and block the DC bias between stages. ESR is an AC measurement, and leakage DC, and it was the excessive leakage of this cap allowing the bias of this amp to be pulled out of spec, and thus cause the amp to become asymmetric. ESR is a far more meaningful measurement on filter caps . . .

I have the same radio. Picked it up from a thrift store not working. Open it up and the first thing I saw was the bumblebee next to the selenium rectifier had exploded with conductive foil all over the inside of the chassis. Needless to say, that cap was replaced along with the selenium rectifier. Nice little radio, very stylish. Good design last the test of time.

Of course a recapped Marantz sounds healthier, more clean, defined and detailed, but somehow the muddy, warm sound of an old / original Marantz has its magic

Good Morning I would like to know which model sounds better a Sx 838 or SX750 and which one is built better and which one has less problems . I was wondering if you would know the answer to these questions I enjoy watching your videos I've learned a lot I wish you the best.

I am restoring restoring a 2215b on my repair bench using a rebuild kit that came with the same ksc2690 transistors. So I will scope it and see if I have the same issue when . I finish. my boards took a bath in Gatorade so will see how it goes. so far sounds good but one channel is louder then the other and it is not the fader style balance . detox that and everything else . So a little circuit tracing to do .I noticed you turning the unit back and forth . a large lazy susan would be helpful for that . that is what I use for in chassis work on the repair bench . I think I am going to go with the black face plate on this one when I am done . I was going to recommend that you should get a variac in addition to your dim bulb tester / very important on vintage units that have sat for a while . Anyway good videos .I'll update in the comments if the 2690 work out ok after checking the bias.

I did a similar thing with an old Realistic receiver a few years back but with my garden hose. I let it bake in the Florida sun all afternoon and it too worked perfectly - in fact it is still my garage receiver and I play it every day.

The idea of electrolytic caps is to remove noise. Digital cap's with low ESR stop the caps from over heating with high frequencies and helps to keep the voltage nice and stable based on the wire inductance run to it. So ya - better caps help reduce harmonics in the circuit. I suggest you run a signal generator and see how flat the audio sweep is between different caps. And don't use speakers use a none inductive resistor load and use a scope. As far as signal caps use current technology. Not film caps, they can have inductance in them. The new super ceramic caps are better at passing high frequencies. You should always use caps with higher voltage than what is in the circuit than what on the schematic. Everything lives longer that way. I have an SA-1000 broken ... but I would have changed the power supply caps also in your amp you fixed. After 30 years there ready to go bad. The new parts are just so much better in most cases.

I used to work in a shop that did Pioneer warranty repairs when these amps were new, there were many output transistor failures due to thermal runaway of the output stage bias pots when these amps were installed near heat sources!

Quick question regarding refurbishing vintage stereos and maybe it's an unfair question to ask. Assuming that the refurbish kit I just bought consists of high-quality replacements for caps, diodes, and resistors, does refurbishing a 50-year old Marantz 2220B receiver ever result in a decline in sound quality? I bought this unit new in 1977 and it is in cherry condition. Everything works and after cleaning it and relamping,, sounds great just not as clear as I remember from the last time I used it about 23-4 years ago. I have the soldering/unsoldering skills and experience to do this right and will be very meticulous along the way to not make mistakes. I just worry about it sounding worse just from the new parts alone.

Just bought a 2270 on eBay and paired with some AR3s. All vintage. I have to replace the power switch and the tuner string is off the pulleys, (I did that). Now taking it to a repair shop 2 hours away to get it right but cant wait to fire it up. Lost my Marantz 2230 in my divorce 30 years ago. I guess I am still paying for it but have upgraded. Bought my original in college and have been missing it every since.

You've come up on my feed suggestions, probably because I also subscribe to XrayTonyB. I like hearing you work through the problems. Interestingly enough, You had mentioned the film vs. electrolytic caps video series Tony put out a while back. Checking my notifications and subscription page, I see that Tony put up "Film Vs Electrolytic Part 2 - Blind Audio Test" about 3 hours ago - June 7, 2024. I will be heading over to listen there after I'm done watching this/your vid.

As an old guy resurrecting his old Marantz 2220B bought in 1976-7 and put in storage for almost 25 years, I certainly fit in your description of who is buying/chasing these except it wasn't because of Covid. I agree with everything you said. As with everything else, once you get into the higher end of everything and people are willing to spend more money to get "the best", egos factor into opinions. It has been my experience and observation that once people spend too much money on things will never accept that it isn't as good as they want to believe. Yes, the high end of audio equipment is superior but which is "the best" is almost always subjective. Musicians, who tend to be great listeners with very good ears and serious audio technicians give the most reliable opinions and even that is subjective. I loved my Marantz for the 25 or so years I used it and it is more than good enough for me. Yes, I am sure there are higher performance equipment out there but I can't really tell the difference. I can't hear 30HZ or 40,000HZ e.g. and once your system can produce music as if the musicians were right there with you, what more are you paying for? Today, I appreciate how my unit was so well designed to be serviceable that even a non-pro like me can refurbish it himself. If I had decided to buy a Pioneer or Harmon Kardon 50 years ago, I would likely feel the same way.

ESR is not the only failure mode of a capacitor, capacitors can also go leaking which means they get conductive internally. usually it will make the capacitance seem higher and the ESR lower. But that was probably what made your voltage drop because the cap was internally shorting...
