My dear old Dad died a few years ago, and we are selling his flat. When going through his post, threatening letters from the TV licence goons outnumber all the other post by 10 to 1. They must have acknowledged his death, as the letters are addressed to the legal occupier. I could tell them, but why should I? Hope the enforcement officer, Scott Robson, is enjoying his 130 mile round trip from Guildford to my Dad's flat every couple of months, for no reason!

The majority of those they prosecute are women. Most of those are single and/or foreign born (poor English). Most of them are poor. Virtually all of them implicated (criminalized and fined) due to being coereced to sign a statement indicating they have broken the law by watching or recording etc live TV.

Same here. I’m unable to cope with TV at all as I am autistic. I have to be very selective about what I watch so I don’t own a TV. I watch instructional videos on KZbin for my hobbies but I don’t watch anything live. I get letters from TVL that are disturbing. I peep in the envelope to see their logo. If see it I just bin it without reading it. I live alone so I only answer the door if I know who it is and I am expecting them.

A tv license is an absolute con in 2023 (without mentioning the cost of living and even covering bills month to month). I'm shocked Chilli, I didn't realise it was Christmas. Having not watched any broadcast TV for years, nor have I purchased a license tax item, I have lost track of the months/years going by. Here's all you need to do: Anytime you open a letter, the second you see the "TV Licensing" logo, instantly screw it up and bin it without a second thought, don't read a word of it, and then carry on with your life. If they come to your door either don't answer, or immediately closed the door the second they tell you who they are, and again carry on with your life as if nothing happened. It's as simple as that. Don't give them any of your time or energy

I received a visit 6 days ago, coincidentally i was reading a letter saying that an enforcement officer was scheduled to call at my property. Prior to opening the door to him i spent a minute securing the dog in another room. I told the guy i didnt have access to the BBC or any freeview channels. He however during the time it took me to open the door had walked onto my front garden and looked into my house. He then questioned that i was watching sports. I told him i was listening to music on you tube and there was a comedy video showing baseball being featured (I think it was a Dire straits track). He said fine and went, but it was rather annoying that he went out of his way to look into my house.

I told them that I don't need a license and they sent a goon around to "inspect". I was, as you said, playing a straight game and I let the goon in. This was a few years ago and the first thing the goon saw was that there were no set-top boxes and the cables to the satellite dish and roof antenna had both been cut. He flicked through a few channels on the TV, found nothing and left looking annoyed. TV Licensing send out a letter every couple of years asking if I need a license yet but otherwise they leave me alone. Obviously I'm not telling people that this is the way to go, I'm just saying that this is what I did. My attitude towards this is if they want to waste their time and resources then I say go for it, I'll annoy goons all day long. The look on the goon's face as he left was satisfying.

I had a visit back when I decided not to renew (I watch films on BD, DVD, some youtube). I had no problem letting the fellow in and we went through it. He seemed happy and I've never had an issue since. That being said: That was 2014 and far fewer people had given up watching live TV/iPlayer at that time, so perhaps the attitude by the Licensing Authority (or some of their employees) has changed a lot?

Jon, you need to tell them that they will not tell you they are goons (TV lisc) So what they do is engage you in conversation about footy/Emmerdale (depending on demographic). Then hit you with 'We are from Capita ....' So the gen public need to be on their mettle with regards to answering the door. You can't just say 'Nothankyou' to soeone who is just asking if you watched Aston Villa on telly last night. You have to tell them to be expecting it, and to beware the false preamble! GOONS!

You could of course send the letters back to the Harrisment Center @ BBC and their address and pop it in the post with no stamp. With return to sender in big letters. 🤣😂😅

I get one of these every 4mnths... i`m called the `legal occupier` even though in 2019 i told them by name, that i no longer wanted a tv pass. they must wipe records as they don`t know my name..

Hey Jon, As a follow on from my letter from TVL, two years after, I had a 2nd letter from TVL asking if I still did not require a license. I replied via their telephone answering service. There was no need to give a name at all. Previous to that, I tried the online service but you cannot complete that process without leaving an email address which of course I wasn't prepared to do. So I would recommend the telephone service method of informing them that you do not require a license.

I love the red envelopes. Means it cost them that little bit extra to print and send out. The more they bombard me with mail the more I smile. Remember everyone it costs them money to print and send letters. It costs you nothing to put them in the bin or use them for kindling.
