Syed Ahmad Shah سید احمد شاہ (takhallus: Faraz فراز ), more commonly known as Ahmad Faraz احمد فراز was born on 14 January 1931 at Kohat کوہاٹ , NWFP (North Western Frontier Province), Pakistan. His fathers name was Syed Muhammad Shah Barq سید محمد شاہ برق . He later moved to Peshawar پشاور (capital of the NWFP) with his family. Like many people from Kohat and Peshawar, he spoke both Hindko ہندکو (very similar to the Punjabi spoken in Northern part of Pakistani Punjab) and Pashto پشتو . He studied at Edwards College, Peshawar. He earned his Masters Degrees in Urdu and Farsi from the Peshawar University. He started his career as a script writer at Radio Pakistan Peshawar. Then he taught as a Lecturer at the Peshawar University. He worked as a Chairman of the Pakistan Academy of Letters. He was also the Chairman of the National Book Foundation, Islamabad, for several years. He was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz ہلالِ امتیاز in 2004, in recognition of his literary achievements. He returned the award in 2006. He developed strong differences with the US-backed military dictatorships of both General Zia-ul Haq and General Musharraf. During Zias years he went into a self-exile and during Musharrafs rule, his luggage was thrown out from his house at his retirement. He was very active in the Judicial Crisis of 2007 (when General Musharraf dismissed the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court), in support of the deposed Chief Justice, despite his failing health. He died in Islamabad on 25 August 2008 and is buried there.
With his passing away, a voice was lost, which sometimes echoed the ghazal of the greatest Urdu poets of the past. His life was at times controversial, due to his liberal tendencies. He is one of the most respected poets of Urdu of the Twentieth Century, after Iqbal and Faiz. His ashaar are fresh, simple, and touch the heart.
The Singer: Mehdi Hassan مہدی حسن was born in Luna, Rajasthan, India in 1927. After partition of the Indian Sub-continent, he moved to Pakistan in 1947. He first sang on Radio Pakistan in 1952. He is presently (2009) incapacitated by a stroke. He has been awarded 3 of the highest civil awards (Hilal-e Imtiaz ہلال ـ امتیاز , Tamgha-e Imtiaz تمغۂ امتیاز , and Pride of Performance Award تمغۂ حسن ـ کارکردگی ) by the Government of Pakistan.
