The Poet: Aurangzeb Khan اورنگ زیب خان, commonly known as Qateel Shifai قتیل شفائی (takhallus: Qateel قتیل) was born in Tehsil Haripur ہری پور (now a District), Hazara ہزارہ , NWFP, British India (now in Pakistan) on 24 December 1919. He chose Qateel as his takhallus and added Shifai to it in honor of his Urdu poetry teacher (ustad) Hakim Muhammad Shifa حکیم محمد شفا. He had to quit his education at a young age due to the death of his father.
He started a business at a young age in which he was not successful. Then he moved to Rawalpindi راولپنڈی, Punjab پنجاب, where he had an ordinary job at a transport company. He moved to Lahore in 1946 and started his literary career as an Assistant Editor for the Urdu literary magazine Adab-e Lateef ادبِ لطیف. By that time he had started writing Urdu poetry. In 1947, he started writing songs for Urdu movies. He became a very popular song writer for Urdu movies and wrote thousands of songs. His first language was Hindko ہندکو, which is very similar to the Punjabi language. He also produced a movie in Hindko, "Qissa Khwani" قصہ خوانی, which was released in 1980. He was awarded the Pride of Performance Medal تمغۂ حسنِ کارکردگی in 1994 for his contribution to literature. He passed away in Lahore, Punjab, on 11 July 2001.
The Singer: Mehdi Hassan مہدی حسن was born in Luna, Rajasthan, India in 1927. After partition of the Indian Sub-continent, he moved to Pakistan in 1947. He first sang on Radio Pakistan in 1952. He is presently (2009) incapacitated by a stroke. He has been awarded 3 of the highest civil awards (Hilal-e Imtiaz ہلالِ امتیاز , Tamgha-e Imtiaz تمغۂ امتیاز , and Pride of Performance Medalتمغۂ حسنِ کارکردگی ) by the Government of Pakistan.
