I can't believe this really happened. In Chicago in 1959? Was that really Hank Jones standing next to Jamal? And was that really Ben Webster digging what he was hearing & thinking 'are these guys for real?' Was that white guy with the pipe really Nat Hentoff the editor of Down Beat then? And was the really the great Jo Jones smiling at us at the very end? Was it for real - or was this just a darn dream?

Nat Hentoff was never editor of Down Beat. He became the editor of Jazz Magazine a couple of years after this wonderful clip.

Yes, and also trumpeter Buck Clayton, and I do think the Count Basie Orchestra might have shared this show and so they are all there with others. Ben Webster was one of Jamal's biggest influences.

@@retrorex I'm unfamiliar with these positions. Is there a difference between Editor of Downbeat and maybe a position like "City Editor"? Wikipedia says this: "In 1952, Hentoff joined Down Beat magazine as a columnist.[17] The following year, he moved to New York to become the city's editor of the magazine.[6] He was fired in 1957, he alleged, because he attempted to hire an African-American writer.[18]" He was editor of something at Down Beat for approximately 5 years.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I still can't believe how blessed I was to be able to study with Vernel for 1.5 years starting in 1965. I still use everything he taught me including the beat for Poinciana. He was a quiet soft spoken man with no hidden agenda. I sure miss him.

Broadcast from CBS Studio 61, housed at the Monroe Theatre at 1456 First Avenue, at East 76th Street, this 1959 episode of Jazz from Sixty-One featured a live performance of "Darn That Dream" by Ahmad Jamal and his trio. Pianist Ahmad Jamal (1930-2023) was accompanied by Crosby (1919-1962) on bass, and Vernel Fournier (1928-2000) on drums. Also visible in the video are other luminaries who performed that evening, including tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier, drummer Jo Jones, trumpeter Buck Clayton and trombonist Vic Dickenson. The show's consultant, Nat Hentoff, can be is seen nodding to the music with a pipe in his mouth and his wife next to him.

Funny thing: On all his album covers, Jamal NEVER showed any photos of Israel Crosby or Vernell Fournier, so I've always wondered what the heck they looked like. This is from the period when Jamal was playing some very interesting stuff in a very individual style and the critics (including Hentoff) could never give him anything but criticism ("cocktail piano," "glib," etc) for it!
@zdogg8
@zdogg8 5 жыл бұрын
I am suprised by the Hentoff tidbit. I knew some others made this stupid "charge" denigrating one of the architects of modern jazz and one of its true virtuosos. Nobody ever played like Jamal, and the chance you would ever see another are slim and none. I was with him about three weeks ago, and he's still going strong, the music still lucid and supple - and bombastic at times - as well. Great man and unbelievable musical mind.
@johntravena119
@johntravena119 5 жыл бұрын
Jamal's emphasis is always on rhythm. His ornamentation is brilliant but he uses it to emphasize the rhythm, often to the extent that the melody falls apart. One gets the feeling he isn't interested in the lyrics of the tune. Maybe, too, he's tired of hearing the song rehashed with the same old cliches & embarrassed to play it straight - the way Gould would do some Mozart. The people who think it's cocktail music miss it's rythmic pulse.
