If Saygun was born somewhere in Central Europe, his compositions would have been discovered and appreciated much earlier and more seriously. He was ordered, not commissioned, by the state to compose the first Turkish opera in less than two months. Saygun was like his name; "saygın" means "esteemed, reputable" in Turkish...
