A Hoarder's Heart

Жыл бұрын

We’re back from Vacation and I’m feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!! We’re getting back in this Hoarded Basement!! In this episode, I’m going to explain why baby step Decluttering has been my only successful way to clean out the hoard. I also address the emotion work that I’m doing to truly free myself of pass trauma and my need to hoard things. My hope and prayer is that by being vulnerable and open about my hoarding, it will humanize hoarding disorder and help people know that they are not alone in this journey 🙏🏼❤️

You're doing so great! My dream for you is once one wall of the basement is cleaned up you can get some really awesome cabinets that have glass covers sort of like what you would see in a museum and you can make a museum display of all your childhood things because honestly they are so cool and they should be kept and cherished and displayed! You could have your own little '90s museum section of the basement

Thank you for sharing your journey. I have a tendency to over buy alot and watching you explain why it is that you hoard kinda opened up my eyes to why I do what I do. Now, when I have the urge to impulse shop because I think I need it, I can step back and evaluate why I feel the need to buy things.

Hii 💜 I am proud of you! It is so hard to dodge feelings and deep thoughts when you are decluttering sentimental items. Maybe you can do a list of things you remember from your childhood that you would absolutley want to keep. Any other thing that you find which is not on the list might be easier to get rid of. It is not important to hold on to all of your childhood memories. Only the best ones are worth to be remembered.

Thank you for explaining in detail the cause of your hoarding. I think I hoard for the same reason. I was badly bullied in school so when I was at home I spent the majority of time in the bedroom. I've lived on my own since I left home, I still spend the majority of my time in the bedroom. I need to heal my inner child, I only feel safe at home, so I avoid all social situations. I'm crying now because I can finally start to deal with my root cause too. Thank you so much 💗💗.

You are doing amazing Miss Heart!!!! I too struggle with sentimental items, everything I own has a story, and that story is a part of who I am. I realized that it’s okay to keep things that don’t serve a “function”, such as clothes, shoes, dishes, etc. a sentimental items purpose is to bring me joy, and to remind me of a time in my life, or a person I love. But when I kept these items in boxes in the attic, I wasn’t allowing them to serve me. How could these items make me happy, if I never got to see them unless I was stress cleaning and overwhelmed and anxious…? So I decided to implement these items into my life. My childhood stuffies get rotated in my room (I don’t have enough space to fit them all so I rotate them every season/holiday change as I do my normal decor) Photo albums are kept on my bookshelves, sentimental clothing like my prom Dress are kept in my closet. And so on and so forth. By doing this change it has not only allowed me to identify items of true significance to me, but allowed these items to serve their true purpose in my life. I no longer feel guilty for holding onto them, and I get reminders of them every single day! It has also made decluttering SO much easier for me now, when I go through sentimental items, I treat them as decor in a way. Where would I want this item displayed in my house. If my gut instinct is “I don’t want it out for people to see” I set the item aside to further see if it’s because that item is super personal, and should be placed where only I can enjoy it, or, if that means it isn’t as important in my life as I thought it should be! Sorry for the ramble but just some food for thought!! I am so proud of you!❤️❤️

For those larger sentimental items such as your childhood placemats or other things that are too large to really store well, I would take good photos of them and then create a special memory book for them. One of those online sites that actually make a photo book from your chosen photos. That way you still have the cherished items but they are not taking up needed space. It's the memory that we want to keep, not really the item itself in many cases. It is very hard to part with things from childhood or the children's childhood, I know. Pepper is a very good helper. :-)

Honestly, I don't think I could do this part. The trash? No problem. The excess holiday stuff? Gone. The childhood memories? No way. I am so thankful I didn't have to make those choices as an adult. We moved and I lost most of my childhood possessions at that point. More moves and just evolving through phases and I lost more. I see a lot of your toys and remember my own and it makes me sad that I don't still have this or that. Thankfully, those choices are in the past and the sadness is minimal. Now the stuff I do have are the things I can carefully choose to get rid of or keep and I'm finding the older I get, the less inclined I am to hold on to items. Many of my toys were played with by me, my niece, and then my own daughter and I feel 3 generations is pretty good. I know they aren't in any condition for grandkids or great grandkids. I don't intend to leave my kids with storage sheds of stuff to throw in a trash can when I die so we are slowly purging things we know no one would want. Good luck!

These piles are growing by leaps and bounds! I have a question simply because I am ignorant of how so many others live, this is not a judgement just an honest question. I noticed you have a lot of placemats from your childhood and had several placemats from when your kids were young, do a lot of families assign a specific placemat to each child that belongs to them? I grew up in a...let's call it non-traditional home...so I am truly curious to learn things that happen in a "normal" home. So proud of you!!
@The_Joy_Finder

In some households, each person's placement is of something they like at the time for children. It's a tool to help keep their attention during mealtimes when they are small. Other households don't care and it's generic. I don't think many people hold on to them for so long though.
