My kids are always really motivated to sell stuff when we have a garage sale. I'd encourage your boys to go through those bins before you have your garage sale and see if there's anything they'd like to sell. As we're pricing, we basically tally up what they are selling and then give them the $ whether it sells of not, because it heads to Goodwill if it doesn't sell.

I made a spreadsheet of all of our VHS tapes a few months ago, then did some research on streaming and selling price. Most were available for streaming or rental if I really wanted to watch them in the future. I could've made some profit selling them, but it wasn't anything substantial, and I didn't know what the quality of the tapes were anyways. I did keep the ones I might want to digitize in the future. The main spot I got stuck was that I wanted to dispose of them properly. There weren't any nearby recycling places for VHS tapes, so I would've had to send them off somewhere. This seemed like a hassle, so I held onto them for a while. I ended up donating them, hoping someone else could sell them if interested or enjoy them.

I did the same thing with gift bags. I had to get them all together and then declutter. It made it much easier when I saw how many I had and then I could let go of a lot of them.

When I was little my mom was always asking me before getting rid of my toys. She grew up in a children's hospital 6years, and donated them all to the children's hospital she grew up in and my grandma on my dad's side still worked at. She would always tell me about how she would have been so happy as a kid if she had that at the hospital, and that I would make many children happy. There is one toy I can think of that I kind of hope I didn't declutter (I honestly don't know) but in general I am still very glad for our donations.

My grandson ,who is the same age as your oldest boy, had tons of legos he gave to me to hold for his future kids. Surprise🎉 his Mom has a other boy,age two, to play with legos when he is older. Now when both boys have kids they can divide the legos and pass the toys to their own kids! My grandson,14, has kept some special “men” (he laughs at me for calling them that) that he displays in a glass front shelf,I had a man make it for him, for just a little bit of childhood in his room😇

I'm glad that you've figured out what works for you to be successful in decluttering. I was just reflecting earlier today that I can tend to have an all or nothing attitude in how I work and that I'm more successful at getting stuff done if I allow it to be a little at a time. Otherwise, I'll tend to pick nothing as I don't have the time to complete a big project in one go at this stage in life.

Awesome method to start first with what doesn't spark joy. I notice the more I go back in years, the more emotional attachment I have. Especially the 80's and 90's where the hoarding started. So starting with more recent stuff gets the thing going. You have lots of strength and trust me the childhood era is the hardest. If I get down to that idk if I can let go. I won't push myself just keep telling myself I am ok and don't need to cling on the past. Great progress! ❤️

BRAVO..... excellent work. I like that you move the tubs that require more time to a different section and keep going. This is a genius idea. I like that you can pick some bits out of a sentimental bin even though it looked like a sentimental bin for the most part. Another genius move. This approach will work for me and now i feel ready to tackle some boxes after seeing this technique. You did a greaaaaaaaaaat job. Congratulations 🥳 🥳🥳🥳🥳

I have worked out in my decluttering journey that I don't get hung up or stuck on the emotional items. I just set it aside to work on later. This is important when there are many items and boxes to go through, there are many decisions to be made. Going through getting rid of the 'tossy tossy' items, the donation items and the 'keep' items is so much easier and less exhausting. This way one builds a momentum and you don't get stuck.

My kiddos have issues decluttering so its inspiring to see younger kiddos with stronger decluttering muscles. My kids are now 20 and 23 and they both love their collections of certain items. My older one does declutter often but still has a lot and my younger one has many regrets on items previously decluttered so its hard for him.

If the magnet set didn't ruin the vhs tapes some might be able to be sold. Some people are really into collecting vhs, especially Disney movies. Edit: lego sets are another valuable resale item. If your boys still have the manuals they could go through and find the pieces for the sets. They may enjoy the option to do a little work to earn money off what they sell.

I would definitely at least ask the boys if they would like to try and piece together sets to sell online. Depending on the sets, they could get a lot of money if they take time to piece it together, even without original instructions and/or boxes. Minifigures are another thing that can be extremely valuable depending on how many sets they came in. For example we have a figure that only came in one set so it can sell for $500.

I feel like we are on the same path and I am currently on my 15 th carload. I tried to have yard sales because of the guilt of spending money on things but I just had too much stuff to manage, so now I struggle with where to take everything. Im self diagnosed ocd and maybe adhd and do not take medication for it. I struggle with taking games, legos, or anything even to donate unless I have all the pieces and in the right box etc. I was wondering if you struggle with that and if not too personal do you go to therapy or take meds. for your ocd/ adhd. People do not understand that I have a certain way that I have to work on it and although I do appreciate someone offering to help, it’s hard enough having to talk myself through the process w/o having to explain why my brain works this way. You have been a much needed inspiration for me . Thank you. p.s. I’m adding to this because I just happened upon an old video where you explained how your husband feels about your hoarding and how you have to touch every item and no one can help you. Thank you for sharing that too. I’m not alone in this!

I get it wanting to separately declutter. Even without a disorder, I feel like I doubt a lot whether or not I have another one of a certain thing, so I will just gather everything until at some point I have time to look at it all and be certain I don't need something because indeed I already had one version of it! It's natural and even for normal people it feels good and safe to let go then. It's a waste to re-buy something because you tossed it too soon, thinking you had it, but turned out you didn't, right? :)

Keep going Ms Heart, as you are doing so well, especially given that you are working through the harder to process items. I could see from your expression that you were still sensitive when it came to the baby gift bags, as you looked a little saddened. May I respectfully suggest, if you are not doing so already, that you consider talking through your sensitivities relating to all the baby items with someone professional as they could help you process those difficult feelings more throughly. 🌸🌼

Well, I ordered some - same awesome quality, same small batches and same wonderful smelling and hard working products. I was so happy even though I spent money I wasn’t expecting. Look around for coupon codes or,leave stuff in your cart, and they will send you a code like they did me. Anyway, thanks for sending me down memory lane of one of my favorite products :).
