The reason for the chills is basically due to the connection it shares not just indirectly being a song sung by Ijima Mari over two decades back compared to when this was recorded, but directly within the story itself as during the ending of Episode 12 , they come across the ruins of the old "first generation class ship Global" , it just resonates deeply with the fanbase of the original show, and the DYRL movie. Even if you weren't alive or old enough to appreciate the original Macross back then, I feel like even a small gap of few years was enough to emulate the emotional tsunami the fans from the original show must have felt upon seeing a first generation fortress and such a beautiful rendition and cover of the original Ai Oboete Imasu Ka by Megumi Nakajima the emotional impact is multiplied. I've heard both versions over and over endlessly for over a decade now and I still cannot pick one over the other. Because not only the performance by Megumi Nakajima was flawlessly executed but whoever made the decision to include the song and the visuals of the first generation fortress giving a nod to the SDF-1 was equally worthy of praise. A song that is truly timeless and fitting to be included in the Legend of Eternal Songs album in the franchise.

This is my ultimate favorite version of them all. Maybe it is because this brings back a lot of precious memories, but to me it sounds incredibly beautiful.
