As far as I understand you can't really make AI "forget" things once it has been trained on a particular data. Which makes it all the more insidious with AI companies putting "opt-out" options for people since it is completely meaningless.
@leah___662712 сағат бұрын
@shershah9660 I've trained my own models, though nothing as big as OpenAI and not using stolen work, and you technically could. It just requires deleting /resetting to an older version of the model before you trained it on whatever data you want it to forget. DougDoug's Pajama Sam playthrough is a good demonstration of reseting models. It also requires the people behind the model to be willing to do that tho, and I unfortunately don't think any of these companies would be.

@@analias1983 Machine learning and "AI" has been in tech for like almost 20+ years. Research into this field has been there since like the 50s-80s. Neural networks and research boomed especially in the 90's. It's just the public wasn't aware of it until large language models and stable diffusion were actualized and shoved into our faces. The mysterious "algorithm" uses machine learning and you could consider it AI. Generative subtitles, speech recognition, facial recognition, fraud detection, dynamic pricing, etc. Honestly AI is too vague of a term that could be pointing to a countless amount of technologies from relatively old to cutting edge. I work at a library and we had to watch this webinar about AI and it was so awful. The lady was like “AI can take care of my day to day busy work so I can focus on the important stuff” and then went on to say she had AI write a grant proposal and create a presentation when she was trying to get funding for a new facility. And I was just thinking, damn…if you’re using AI for that, then what’s the important stuff??? And then someone asked a question about the ethics of AI and art, and instead of talking about the issue of plagiarism the presenter was just like “I think if I made the prompt then I get to say I made the art.” Meanwhile the PowerPoint they’re using has horrible quality and frankly frightening images. It really bugged me that they only praised AI and didn’t consider the negative aspects at all Edit* For some reason KZbin keeps deleting my response to the person who doesn't believe me, so I'll say it here. The webinar is called AI and Libraries: Enhancing Services and Engaging Communities and the exact quote is "I would say, like, I created it because I led it and I gave the prompts. I created those prompts." To be fair, he does go on to change his mind a couple times, and he ends by saying that he would at least credit the AI used. And while I do think that saying "This is an image I created using [AI name]" is more genuine that just saying "This is an image I created" I still don't think that simply making the prompts is enough to have any actual claim over the act of creation. That's just my opinion though.

Had a non-profit client where I handle almost EVERYTHING media-wise at a discount because I'm friends with the director. I got an email from a project manager saying "Can you post this to our website?" and it was a glitchy AI image for an event three months away. Emailed over all the password logins to accounts and said they broke the terms of the contract and sent an invoice for the remaining 50k contract and texted my friend that runs it that I quit. The manager had apparently lied to the director saying it was a stock image and not AI. I warned them that AI images is a fast way to get your audience against you, got paid, and left. It is not the art style is similar to an art style. AI likes to use a semi realistic, cartoon art style. And when you look closely at their art, it’s really easy to tell. It’s not AI. I love their style and they charge way too low price for art because people just don’t commission them that much. Also, another thing is stores thinking it’s OK to use AI on products. I’ve seen it more and more nowadays some stores more than others and I hate it! Specifically Miniso, any product doesn’t have a licensed character on it, there’s a high likelihood the arts on it is AI. I noticed it recently and I hate it. The issue, to my mind, is how eager people are to use AI as a replacement rather than a tool. I will not and have never used AI to generate an essay, book, or artwork, because ethical issues aside, it will never do it the way I want it done to make the point I want to make. Recently, though, I've done audio transcriptions using automatic transcriptions by a service that has implemented some amount of generative AI (I know this because unlike a basic transcription service, it will occasionally hallucinate repeating blocks of text). Now, audio transcription is easier to automate than art, music, original writing, or even translation between languages, because most of the thing already exists, and the software has a lot to work with. Working with the genAI-augmented transcripts makes my job take about half as long as typing them from scratch (I'm a fairly average typist and don't have tons of experience). It still takes me hours, though, because every line must be audited by a human in order for it to be any good. It doesn't capture nuance with punctuation the way I want it to. It misinterprets words sometimes. Sometimes it hallucinates. Sometimes it skips things. As I understand it, it's similar to coding in that way, where the ability to generate such large chunks in such a short amount of time can speed along the process, but it's still too dependent on context and interpretation for genAI to ever be able to do anything without a person sitting there and getting everything it spits out. I think anyone who's worked with it knows this. The people in charge of hiring and firing, unfortunately, either don't know or don't care if their end product is garbage.

My issue with AI is specifically with generative AI and the AI’s that are becoming the default on social media platforms, search engines, and “assistant” AI’s that are shoved down our throats and impossible to opt out of. I don’t want an AI on my phone or laptop, I don’t want AI reading my emails and summarizing them, I don’t want to see your generated AI image (it’s not art), I’m tired of companies making record breaking profits and then generating AI slop commercials and packaging. I think AI has extremely beneficial uses in research, scientific, and medical fields where processing data or the like would take a human many lifetimes. I know it’s used in video games and in the agriculture industry in really beneficial and necessary ways, that is not my beef with AI, that’s a very different branch of AI. I do not want AI replacing jobs, making people fear for their livelihoods, or being forced on people to use against their will in their work and social life but that’s exactly where it seems like we are heading. Our world is all about squeezing every last drop of productivity and profit out of everything and AI is allowing that to happen on an even larger scale. I just can’t shake the feeling that this overwhelming public adoption and advertisement of AI by every major brand I can think of is really pushing us a lot closer to a dystopian future where it gets to do the things that truly make us human like connections and creativity while we struggle to get by.

One of the scariest things to me is the increase in AI in healthcare. You hear amazing things about AI being able to diagnose cancer with greater accuracy and things like that, but what they DON’T tell you is that more and more healthcare professionals are using AI instead of their critical thinking skills that they went to college and through internships to hone and license. There are whole AI softwares designed to listen to your doctors visit in real time and chart for them, including summaries of what is discussed placed directly into your medical chart. There are websites that purport to do a primary evidence review and answer medical questions, and they’ll give drastically different results to two different people with the same word for word prompt. I had a physician send me an order for a medication with their entire rationale for treatment from an (incorrect mind you) AI summary from a website. And I hear more and more medical professionals with post grad degrees fawn over these “resources” with little to no oversight or forethought into what liabilities there are and the actual patient harm that could be caused.

@ilmuoui personally, i think it’s the fact that it’s ai commenting on race that i find weird. like if a person told me i should diversify what i read, i would be a lot more willing to hear them out compared to ai. there’s a reason minorities are actively advocating for it. there’s real life significance behind why people bring it up. ai doesn’t have a real reason. there’s no personal motivation behind ai. it doesn’t feel things, it doesn’t experience things. i’m trying really hard to put my thoughts into words so i hope i’m making sense lmao
@littlepaperjellyfish6 сағат бұрын
@ilmuoui There is a significant diversity gap in publishing/authorship. I guarantee you that there would have been a fuck ton of people who only consumed content from white authors. But you don't see the AI commenting on that, do you? It considers white authors (and for that matter, able-bodied, straight, etc. as suggested by other summaries) to be the default. Suggesting black authors to someone who reads predominantly white authors is an attempt at levelling the playing field, and promoting a diversity of perspectives, considering the historical racism and imbalance. Suggesting white authors to someone who reads predominantly black authors is not similar.

Even as an educator in the tech and AI space, I can recognize that we need a regulatory body for emerging technology. Due to the way AI works none of these groups have to be transparent with you outside of a lawsuit, so good luck digging up information. That is 90% of the point for them. The groups don't care about public outrage unless it suits their internal motivations. They're playing a long game but the return on investment is there. Nothing we've done so far outweighs that return on investment potential but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Using AI for captions might be good for accessibility, but it put translators and captioners out of a job. Can it be used in a pinch? Sure. But the problem is multi million companies deciding not to hire someone because "ai can do it" and it doesn't even always do it right, or doesn't account for culture differences on something like Anime where there may be something only someone raised in that culture would be familiar with and the translator needs to write a work around that relates to the language/culture they're translating to. Generative AI is a plague that saps color out of people's lives. I want AI to do my dishes and identify cancer cells, not make art for me to make a profit.

This video is super interesting to me, because your opinion changed so drastically once you felt the effects of it, and we get to see that happen in almost real time, like a conversation. This isn't a dig or a read, just observing how the human mind (which isn't meant to experience things on this scale, isn't meant to feel responsible for the universe) gives passes and allowance to things that we don't perceive as "ours," (like, "idk why I don't like this, I just don't" or "oh, it's just a tool, it isn't evil" type phrases) but once something is considered part of our own area of existence, once it actually touches us, the feeling of wrongness becomes a lot clearer in our minds, and we can pinpoint the reasons it gives a person all those negative feelings. Like, we can't actually see things until they actually enter our PERSONAL space. (This is just my opinion btw, just me mumbling some psychology theory in a youtube video's comment section 💖)

Yup. That's how it goes. A lot of people generally don't care about GenAi's impacts as long as it doesn't impact them. The whole video, Swell was "It has its uses", "It's just a little oversatured" and then the moment she directly sees the harm to her, then "Fuck all AI". The annoying part is these people aren't actually against AI, just AI impacting them. If these companies rolled it back just a little, then most people would be okay so whatever mass backlash we're seeing is likely only temporary until OpenAI, Meta, whoever dials it back just enough to appease enough people.

AI is a major headache when your work is under or partially under NDA, especially where its being implemented into existing things. If you start using a program, and its an industry standard for 10+ years, and now its full of AI, what tf are we supposed to do? Everything being 'AI' when things could be analytics is taking years off my life. Assistive AI, I don't have too many issues when its actively maintained. Programs that actually solve a problem or bridge a gap? Yeah alright. Generative? GTFO. The people who used chatgpt to do their research for a legal case made fools of themselves, but I'm honestly worried about the possibility of some person using it at work, the AI puts something unnoticed into engineering drawings somewhere and actively causes harm.

This is the problem; these companies so badly want AI to be a set-it-and-forget-it feature, and it just doesn't work that way, because ultimately, at some point, it's going to randomly say a slur for no reason and you'll have no one to blame, no one to fire, and no one to make an example of because you wanted no one left. And that's not hyperbolic; we already have AI telling people to end themselves, or eat poisonous mushrooms, or to drink bleach. Yes, the tech can be impressive, but it's a bit like inventing the A Bomb and immediately selling it as back-up generator. It just doesn't work that way. And that's not even going into the copyright landmine field dead ahead.

I think Tech suffers from recurring (more than a lot of things) hype cycles (web, cloud) and AI is the latest. It will have its uses but not anywhere near the amount being spent on it. Watching tech for the last 30+ years there are a sort of people that throw tech words around that have learned the usage via context and you can can have a room full of "tech types" that if you listen carefully don't really know what they're talking about. I pity the actual engineers and rather cynically am waiting for human silliness to kick in, it will take a few years but until then I'll pick my stocks and timing carefully🙂

AI doesn't have to be generative. Companies can use it for example gathering and analyzing information in a volume that couldn't be done othervise. And gathering data by itself has no moral. For example, to get genuine sustainability information about a product (how it's resourcing, production, transport, storage, use and end-of-life affect environment, water use, ethical work, animal welfare, circular economy, climate change...) require so much data that it couldn't be do just using sustainability specialists. "I hate all AI!" is like saying "I hate internet!" or "I hate television!". It means nothing. What you do with it, or do against doing evil with it, matters.

As a user of LLMs a few years back was that was that it felt like research to see if this numerical indexing of words and the probable next indices to reach numerical representation of the subject you prompted and follow through. It was novel, it was showing patterns in language can be used to Mashup ideas in a way that can often be inspiring or a diamond in the rough conceptually. And God dammit were there so many disclaimers and communications that these modules will lie, they are trained on inperfect data they are not a repetior of facts. But like circa 2021 2022 it felt like all those guard rails and disclaimers and explicit acknowledgement that these AI arent meaningfully cognizant . They aren't general AI, they are programs that whittle down and itterate noise into its best guess what the user wants to see or hear or read by comparing its noise to the desired reference. Yessss dude the way companies are trying to present AI as this magic little box that has all the knowledge in the universe and can be the solution to anything is sooo irresponsible. It’s a calculator spitting out words, it does not think about what it’s saying or have concepts of morality or truthiness, it’s just spitting out patterns of words it found on the internet. It may be good at summarizing or aggregating information but that is just a side effect of the sheer amount of human-generated data they pumped through it, sourced from anywhere they could scrape data from without being caught
