Came to listen to Robin's substantial computational update to the Fermi paradox and the in suing invigorating debate. Bob's actual response: "...Ok... So back to AI"

Love to hear Hanson. Seems like there is a lot of interruption happening; I do wish that some of the sentences in this episode could have been finished.

I've seen many podcasts with Robin Hanson, and despite that, I still usually learn something new from each one. Except this time. I blame the host, who is an arrogant prick - which is something I can deal with and quickly forgive, but only when the trait occurs in a smart person who knows what he's talking about and has useful things to say.

We should focus on people here and now. Spreading out across the universe is a bad idea. AI are not our children. This is a bunch of engineers jealous that they don't make babies - imagine!

I think it so simple. AI will only be as “good” as we are! How in the world could it be otherwise. We are the only source that created, manufactured and put the whole system together. Human beings function through/with the use of their emotions to a much greater degree, than through their intellect or ability to critically think. We have never been, nor will we be perfect creatures, therefore our AI progenies will be flawed too. The line of good and evil does go through each of us. Can we only hope that the “better” among us, are creating the algorithms or doing the programming?

If you think our ancestors were monkeys and that makes sense to you after doing your due diligence i dont think your going to get too far in your search to predict the future.

Interesting. I've never just stopped watching one of these before, but the "I've not seen aliens" back and forth did it for me. An unwillingness to pay attention to what's happening isn't a viable path to an accurate assessment of reality. There's always been real weird shit happening in our skies that could be explained by science, can't be refuted by science, and would be ignored as the result of cognitive biases, but you folks just don't wanna see it so you say you don't see it and you get to be wrong because that's easier. It's embarasing.

Uhhhh, it's just a jovial aside while introducing the fermi paradox. Neither of them are aware of personally seeing a physical alien. Oh lawd, better shut off the podcast.

@@jayp3570 analyze that for cognitive biases and logical fallacies, Bob.
