Personally I like your drawings even if you consider them amateur. As for AI, I think so long as you're not selling the art and are using it in an educational manner (such as this video) you should be fine to do it.

Sadly, AI tech requires Billions of datasets to work the way they do. For context, the datsets AI image like Midjourney and Dall-E use have around 5 percent public domain as training content. As in the entirety of PD content out there that was scraped.

There's a character who went by the name John Henry in DC Comics' mini-series The New Frontier(the hood and noose rope made him look like Hooded Justice from the Watchmen)and if you read Stargirl-The Lost Children featuring obscure kid sidekicks to the Golden Age heroes(including the Quality heroes),there was John Henry, Jr....!

Issue 0 of that Golden Age mini hinted at such a better story than we ended up getting. :/ All those cool alternate universe sidekicks really had nothing to do with anything.

I draw, and yes, I do see AI as a threat to artists. But, I also see it as a fun tool that can be used to inspire creatives in their works. I've tried it out a few times, but I've never been 100% satisfied with the results. Maybe 80% at best. I'm sorry you had to deal with the AI backlash. The Demon AI creations were nice, but the only one that seemed to fully demonstrate a true understanding of the artist's style was the Rich Buckler one. All the others had "touches" of this or that artist, while the Buckler one does truly look like a Buckler piece to me. A page rate for full art (penciling, inking, colors, etc.) should probably be around $500 per page, if not more, for that level of quality. Comics publishers are already saving money by hiring artists in other countries where the American dollar is strong. They get more bang for the buck that way -- at least, that's what they believe. A lot of fans look at many modern day comics art with utter disbelief at how bad it can be at times.
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 7 ай бұрын
Great comment! As for me, modern comics art has become soul-less. The humanity of it has already been driven out leaving a stale almost corporate sterile feel to it. The Buckler panel was by far the one that the AI totally nailed. Others...the Neal Adams was close...same with the Jack Kirby. The Bob Kane panel made me laugh because it got the background like it did.

I don't know how I missed this video. I'm an artist and I've goofed around with AI a little bit and I like it a lot. I use it for specific styles that I just can't replicate. At the very least it can be the basis to use for drawings. I use it like a "still life" or collage that I can use for reference in my actual art. I've used it just as you have. I've also used it to get ideas for my TTRPG characters that I got from an RPG random character generator. I copy/paste the text and run it through the AI to get an idea of the character. It's fun. It's just another tool, in my opinion. Great Job! ✌🏾

Even if we ignore all the moral and legal complications and debates that comes with AI generated "art," then there is still simply something eerie and soulless about it, even when its at its best. Not that my opinion really matters, but I really hope this was just a bit of curious experimentation with some new technology and not a sign of things to come. Your videos were already really good, you don't need this creepy technology to enhance it in any way.

Okay. First of all, I want to say that I liked the video. It was very interesting, and educational. Now, for a more lengthy answer, I know it might seem long but I would appreciate it if you read it. I agree with what you said about AI generated art, and what the future might bring. In fact we saw it already happening since the last decade, but most people did not care. For example, when showing a city in a movie it used to be made by a CGI artist that would make every building and set it up on a 3D setting so a filmmaker could use it for a movie. But before anyone knew it, a computer could just generate a bunch of tall buildings scattered over several blocks. Sure, it looks terrible and not really practical. But nobody cared, because it was just used on a 5 second overhead shot. I think that the big problem is that nobody wants to sit down and have an actual discussion about the subject. The Internet is just filled with AI-antis, some of which aren't even artists but just want to stir up the flames, when the moment one utterst "AI" and "generated" in a sentence they pounce to attack. Trying to reason is impossible because they just cover their ears, shut their eyes and go "LALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALALA!" and the people on the other side, the AI supporters, are no good either, as they continue to argue that "I made this, check it out" when they ask an AI to generate art, and anyone that tells them that no, you just wrote a prompt and a computer made the art, they would again get angry and call you a closed minded man that lives in the past and that the art was made by them, and the computer was just a tool and all that. Neither side is willing to listen to the other and have an actual debate, which does not help either side. I would like to recommend to you another KZbin channel of a creator called AustinMcConnell, who has a channel that covers several subjects of cultural significance. Since last year, Austin has been working on creating his own Superhero Universe by using only public domain character superheroes from the Golden Age of comics. He also has released some short videos where he explains the origins and original publications of the different characters he will use in this new public domain Superhero Universe he is making. So far he has been able to successfully launch two Kickstart campaigns to cover the costs of two animated movies, one will be finished later this year, the other one has just been funded and production for it has just started, after a short Pilot was released on his channel about it. He has also released a book set in said Superhero Universe which can be purchased already online. It is about that book that the controversy of AI was spurred on his channel. You see, to promote the release of the book, which he had written himself with the help of another co-author, he had an audiobook version of the first Chapter of the book released for free on his channel. However, he used an AI generator to make the pictures for the audiobook, and also another one for the voices that read the dialogue and narration (for the exception of one character which Austin voiced himself). He got a lot of backlash for that, and later released another video explaining why he had used AI for that (he explained that he wanted to get actual voice actors and an artist, but considering that unlike the movies the book was written with a budget of 0, he realized he could not afford to do so and decided to use AI to make that free promo chapter 1 release). He explains it better on that video, I recommend you watch it, it is very interesting and he makes very good points and counterpoints, the video was meant to try and start an actual civilized discussion about AI. Austin also got some pretty severe accusations after that AI video, as some even accused him of having used AI to write the entire book, despite the fact that he had the help of a fellow writer with experience, not to mention that I have read his book and it clearly is written by a human being, not an AI. Those accusations were made clearly by people that had not read the book, and were just pointing fingers for the sake of pointing fingers.

I will check out AutinMcConnell channel. It sounds interesting. One thing that does bother me about making this video is that anything I create in the future, the accusation of AI comes with it. I'm concerned but not overly worried by it because we sort of saw this in the early 2000s. I was into photography and many old school photographers snub their nose up to digital DLSRs and Adobe Photoshop. They didn't think of it as photography. With the way things went, a few short years later, their opinion didn't matter because everyone was taking digital pictures and fixing them in Photoshop. My prediction is the same with AI. It will become the new norm.
@CSLucasEpic
@CSLucasEpic 7 ай бұрын
@@FizzFop1 Very likely, yes. To be honest AI has already been in use for many years, but just being taken into the attention of the general public recently. For example, AI is always used in Hollywood movies when an aerial view of a city has to be generated for one of those small takes that last 5 seconds or so. A computer will generate blocks of buildings and skycrapers that look like a generic city in a fraction of a time that a 3D artist would be able to do so. And there is sport journalist AI where all you have to do is input the data of a game (date and location, final score, lineups) and the AI will generate a small article about the game which is then published on magazines. The thing with technology it that it makes jobs obsolete. What it took 10 people to make 30 years ago, now its done by one person and a bunch of robots.

I am intrigued, and didn’t even consider AI attempting to replicate artist styles of the past. I don’t like the idea of AI replacing the artist but it’s definitely something something fun to toy around with. Now granted for a company that shortstaffed and can’t afford highly talented artists for instances, such as this where you’re a one-man army, I don’t see why not. I would love to see a video of classic pages and cover art of famous comics done in the style of say Jack Kirby, or Steve Dido or anyone else that comes to mind using AI just for sh!ts and giggles.

I think I understand why many people dislike AI art so much. Humans have to train and practice for years to become skilled artists. AI has become capable of creating high quality (if often somewhat odd) art in minutes. It's getting better every day and will likely get to the point where it has none, or nearly none, of the oddities in its products that AI generators currently have. Add on the fact that AI generators are trained using others' art, often without permission, and it makes sense that artists feel threatened by it. The thing is, it's not going away. The box has been opened and people who need or want quick disposable art, especially of niche subjects, are going to use it and it's going to keep getting better and better. Freaking out and trying to shame people over using it, especially just for their own entertainment, is a wasted effort and just broadcasts your insecurities. I think it is vitally important and ethical to disclose and point out when an image is created using AI. I also do not believe AI generated images are art, but they are here to stay and they are only going to become more and more prevalent. Artists must find ways to distinguish themselves from the machines now. It's unfortunate, but it's life.

I think anything involving sequences of art requiring consistency and continuity is gonna always be too much for AI. You're gonna spend more time trying to get Joker to look like the same Joker from panel to panel that you could have used just hiring an artist drawing it. But anyone who can't see the obvious benefits of being able to produce a halfway decent rendering of an image is just fucking blind, I'm sorry. Even if it's "bad" it's better than what most people out there can do and cheap to free. I've seen some people say A.I. should only use public domain materials which I think is hilarious. I think it's a sick joke. We haven't had things enter the public domain for 40 years. Things only started lapsing back until 2019. And now that it's entering it's stuff from 100 fucking years ago. I don't believe our copyright system is a good barometer for what art it is ethical to use, is what I'm saying. And we have the numbers, too: Back when works under copyright required renewal, the vast majority of them didn't even renew. But of course under the way it works even this text you are reading is automatically copyrighted for damn well a century. In terms of copyright I think, I feel in my heart...I don't believe using the art to train the ai is by itself infringement. I believe the resulting art could be considered infringement but like...and I'm sorry to put it this way....if you're on the set of a movie and you're having the actor watch another movie to "do a character like that"...that's not infringement on copyright. If you're watching a painting to "do a painting like that" that's not infringement. Then again I'm not the judge deciding this, so who cares what I think. -

AI is just a tool. It is as inevitable as any other advancement, and trying to stop it is like standing in front of a moving train. Its existence doesn't keep you from making art without it still. It does not detract from peoples ability to do art, and it will in fact open the door to more people being able to do it. It was the same when the camera was invented, then the TV. As for it "Taking Jobs", history is full of jobs that are no longer needed. How do you think the horse tenders felt about the automobile. When artists rally against it, they are merely gatekeeping. I went to school for digital art in 2002, and have been hearing this argument since the invention of Photoshop. These are just tools, and it will help to know how to use them.

Not comparable to the steam drill.

I forsee a time when artists can contractually consent to the use of their style by an AI model for a percentage of the profit of any works made by said method. Less than the artist gets paid for a complete work, but a minimalised investment of time as well. The big hullabaloo is over what constitutes consent. Raking and faking online galleries must not even be construed as tacit consent for any reasonable AI production sream to actually function. They have limited what AI is allowed to do with music along those lines. Graphic arts, I'm sure will follow. It is an interesting time, to be sure, when even the old job safe advice "learn to code" is beginning to mean "learn to prompt".

I can see that happening. I could also see Marvel or DC taking their libraries of stories and art to put in an AI...then, they could sell it on a subscription basis. New stories would be generated by AI that would be directly aimed at the reader.

This is like a twilight zone episode a classic one at best. The machines take over and replace human workers. Then they replace the company that used the machine to replace the workers. Some of the AI is interesting and can be used as reference for a traditional artist to tell a story, but there will always be someone who will want an artist signature at a comic book show or to meet the artist that entertain them while they were reading a graphic novel or standard comic book you can't do that with AI technology although this is creepy, I think artists can still do what they have to do to be recognized and it's nice to see you again back in action regardless of this tales from the crypt episode

Here's the deal--AI is a toy. I suspect it never will be more than a toy. It can be used as a tool to *direct* inspiration, but it is in no way a replacement for actual creativity. I've used it to help me visualize things, but I always ended up doing the work for myself. You're not hurting anyone, my friend. You are using a toy....as a toy, not as an end-all and be-all.
@FizzFop1
@FizzFop1 7 ай бұрын
Right now it's a toy. It reminds me of digital photography. The first cameras were less than a meg-pixel. Everything was blurry and full of digital artifacts. I can remember friends who were pro-photographers saying that it wasn't going to amount to anything...then, the tech took off and it created a division in the photo field. The tech eventually won out.

Honestly I mostly agree with you. AI is probably going to make a lot of people lose their jobs, even if it is used ethically. For example, you mostly made AI design stuff from text prompts, but you can also use AI to color your art, to turn your art into pixel art or to adapt your art to other styles, like watercolors or cgi. And if you are an artist who has hundreds of pieces of art of your own property, you can use them to train an AI to color your art in your style, AND if you use it only to color your art while drawing the linework yourself, it is going to be an ethical use by almost all measures. This isn't done much right now because all current AI interfaces are still very limited, so the AI might decide that the moon is a giant eye or a character's leg that was kicking from behind someone is a hand, that a shadow is a cat, etc. but once it is integrated into something more "photoshop-like" and you are able to paint areas of a drawing slowly with your prompts, it is going to easily replace most current digital art painting techniques for people on a budget. And this is going to probably happen in the very near future.

This is a very interesting excercise. Shame that so many people gave you so much trouble over this. I get that it’s a sore topic, especially for many creative people, but just burying your head in the sand and trying to shout people into not using AI or even talking about it isn’t going to work. AI is here to stay, whether we like it or not, and we have to deal with it. Videos like this are good because it offers insight into how AI works and what you can do with it and knowing those things will help us imagine all the things it could and will be used for. I also agree that there is no way that companies like Marvel & DC won’t start using AI. It’s a question of when, not if. I think that at this rate we might even be only a year or two away from seeing them either announce that they will be publishing something generated by AI or they will just try to do it without revealing it. Using AI will be much more economic for them in the long run, that’s no question, so it’s bound to happen, but what are the ethics and legalities of it? For example, if they own the art of an artist who did some work for hire for them, can they choose to freely use that art to teach AI? And how long before artists will have to agree in any contracts they might sign, that they must let the companies use their art to also train AI? Whether you agree to that kind of thing or not might be the determining factor to get in if you want to work for the big two and you might have to be a really big name to be desirable enough to be able to say no on that matter.

Too funny. I looked for an artist for years to partner up with me for a comic strip. Various ideas, at least twenty proposals. NEVER worked out. Most were borderline rude about it, and a few who flat out deserved a knuckle sandwich or two. AI brought "Portside Portraits" to life. Since, I've had THREE artists offer to help "refine" my work. It's too late. Whatever level of success I achieve I will do it on my own. I'm fine without them. Recently, I made three tribute slideshows to Norman Rockwell. I think they're spectacular. Could an actual artist have done better paintings? Probably. BUT it wouldn't have taken weeks; it would have taken years. And it sure as hell wouldn't have been free.
