I am not sure that could be done today. The two characters are now owned by different groups. Classic Media, LLC, doing business as DreamWorks Classics, now owns the right to the Lone Ranger. The Wrather corporation bought the rights in 1954. Green Hornet, Inc. owns The Green Hornet and leases the character out. This is why the TV show in the 60s never mentioned their relationship. The companies on occasions sue one another whenever there is mention of the familiar relationship between the two. Before 1954, the original TV series would mention the relationship to the Hornet's relative in a couple of episodes.

Great character, definitely. Unfortunately one of my first introductions was watching that seth rogen movie with my dad, and yeah dad wasn't all that pleased with it to say the least (He grew up on the 60s show). We found the video of this serial and bought it to get a better image of the Green Hornet in our minds, and later finding episodes of the 60s show on cable a few years back was really great. Learning about the history of Detroit was really cool, not to mention the inspirations behind the Green Hornet that I actually never knew before watching this video. That's the great thing about comics, when they have a connection to real world history, you not only get a fun adventure but you learn a few things at the same time. I definitely think Green Hornet is still relevant, not as a farce like the 2012 movie did but done seriously. I once imagined the likes of Billy Zane and Jet Li playing Green Hornet and Kato, , but that might not be a good idea for all I know!!!

I even had my Green Hornet use a full mask like in the original serial and have his voice change as a homage. My introduction to the Green-clad vigilante was (like with many others) the Van Williams and Bruce Lee series from the 60's. It's a very important part of my childhood as it helped influence me as a person overall. It's probably why I like Batman: The Animated Series so much. It's in the same vein as The Shadow and The Green Hornet in terms of style. I love the character, it warms my heart to know I'm not alone in that sentiment. I think a contemporary Green Hornet movie would best work in one of two ways. 1) Keep it in the Thirties/Forties setting (or the Sixties at the latest). I don't think anyone would mind a good period piece. Heck, in that case you could just adapt Dynamite's GREEN HORNET: YEAR ONE comic. 2) Set it in a retro/dieselpunk version of the modern day, sort of like the Time Burton BATMAN film.That way you can mix the old-fashioned and the modern in a natural way.

I came to watch the TV series not too long ago and took a liking to the character. I was hoping for the best when the Seth Rogan abomination came along but as we all know.... it sucked hard!! I think there is potential for The Green Hornet to find a place in today's world. There are plenty of criminal gangs out there involved with drug trafficking, human trafficking, mega corporations that threaten smaller independent competitors, local rackets and dishonest politicians (who may have a hand in any of them). After all, he's supposed to be a criminal that takes over (and eventually dismantles) these operations and I'd like to think that Britt Reid would be on the boards of organizations that would help the victims of these criminals like battered women shelters, drug rehab centers, etc.

I've always thought the Green Hornet was one of those characters who never reached his true potential. Sort of like Lee Falk's Phantom. I hope they can both be re-imagined and brought back to popularity at some point.

Different mediums ... comic books are an assembly-line and thus Superman and Batman never go away. Were the intellectual rights to the Green Hornet sold to a PUBLISHER, you'd see him more. The rights are owned by George W. Trendle's heirs, who are independently wealthy, and want so much money, few people are willing to risk it on the Hornet. The Green Hornet was better known than Batman throughout the 1940s ...

60's kid here 🙂. The producers of 66 Batman tried to bring the GH into then modern times, but the show only lasted 1 season, which was a great shame. The style was quite true to the old radio shows of the 30's and 40's, but it seems like by the 60's he no longer connected with a wide audience. Adults had "outgrown" him and kids weren't wowed by the real-world-style villains he faced. The show lacked the tongue-in-cheek campiness of Batman, and the crossover and cameos they did only made it clear that the universes didn't mesh very well. I was a die-hard Batman fan at the time. Personally I only got into The Green Hornet through re-runs, long after the show had been cancelled. Being older then, I was better able to appreciate it, and it got me interested in discovering the old radio shows and film serials for myself. Kato was always cool though! I wish he'd had more dialogue!

They're both such an awesome pair to this day and it is a shame how bery niche they are compared to Batman and Spider-Man.

I believe the green hornet would be perfect in today's environment. A failed media mogul, fighting the digital world of misinformation and cyber crimes. Only way things are done are old fashioned detective work and a touch of hacking panache.

I would argue characters like the Green Hornet are universal, especially when kids get over preconceptions about older stories. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s loving Zorro, the Lone Ranger (we didn't get the Green Hornet shown much in the UK), Charlie Chan and a whole bunch of other "repeats" from the 1930s - 1970s, and I remember loving those as much if not more so than the contemporary programming. By 16 I was hooked on Peter Lorre's Mr Moto series. I sat my kids down with It's A Wonderful Life at Christmas, they thought it was one of the best things they'd ever seen. They also like the original A-Team better than the more recent movie, prefer OG Transformers, and they're begging me to watch the Godfather and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which were all made before I was born. Good stories are good, it's getting them into the market that's the problem, and adapting them for a "modern audience" poisons the well for the original.

There is a great book to learn more about WXYZ, the Detroit radio station that created the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Sgt Preston of the Yukon: "Wyxie Wonderland" by Dick Osgood, and recently reprinted by Bold Venture Press.

Sadly, the rights of the Lone Ranger and Green Hornet are owned by different groups, so the connection between the characters is ignored/downplayed.

Interesting, always loved learning the backstories of iconic characters. As for the question of if the Green Hornet could still work in a modern setting I think so, but it would have to involve some changes, Keto being a 'valet' definitely wouldn't work in today's world for example, but still I think it could work. Unfortunately the Seth Rogan film version probably killed that dream for a long sadly :=(

I enjoyed this history of a great character. I appreciate all the work you put into these videos in order to bring back such great heroes. I want to apologize for overreacting a couple of months back on your pre-Superman heroes video. I was in a difficult place, between back pain and job stress, and I wasn't thinking too logically. I have now subscribed, and you can count on my views. By the way, could you do one on Lee Falk's Phantom?
@FizzFop14 жыл бұрын
Hi James! No worries! Thanks for being there. Sorry to hear about your back pain and stress. I've been through all that myself. I had a partially torn back muscle that nearly destroyed my life. Being a partial tear, it would never heal. I went for ten years before doing something...I took up yoga and I got a tens-electo shock machine. Changed my life. I dropped a few pounds which also help. Currently, I do acupuncture. I haven't felt this good since my twenties. As for stress, the last two years have been crazy (my Mom passed away, new stress filled work promotion, diagnosed with cancer, money issues)-I've been through a wringer! I learned that sleep, meditation, learning how to relax, and getting toxic people/situations out of my life helps greatly...in addition, find little tiny things that make you happy. Sorry to ramble on, I feel bad for anyone who has to go through back pain and stress. They can wreck your life-and you have to be pro-active to overcome it.

As my Dad recalled it, Kato was Japanese until Pearl Harbor, when he turned into a Filipino. Keye Luke as Obi Wan would have been interesting.
@robertmallory1877 Жыл бұрын
The radio station saw how things were going and started to establish Kato being at least part Filipino before Pearl Harbor. Of course after it...!

Are you saying OG Kato is Brak! :0 that's awesome! He was grandpa Brak! Now I gotta time travel to have 90's Brak and Grandpa Brak meet. Oh yeah Buckley was a pinko lefty and so he got killed for being all about exposing the mob in a town that well...has a very close relationship with the Illinois mob. In short he was a victim of his surroundings but moving on, Hey! How about that green hornet huh! Truly underrated! And far better at times than some copies like the DC sandman with the gas mask and that weird Rorschach and his often over looked yet superior Question counterpart. In my opinion it was Hornet and the Shadow! And their both great characters that crossed over a while back in a dynamite comic if I recall, too bad these characters if picked up would simply be hated for being rip offs or badly written by a public that simply put doesn't get them.
@FizzFop14 жыл бұрын
Hi Player Juan! The Green Hornet was the prototype for all those heroes. I think you might have nailed it...most people might think he's the ripoff character anr/or won't understand him.

The Spirit is not a pulp character, but a comic strip/book character who appeared in the "Spirit Section", a sort of mini-comic in the newspapers. Green Hornet is also not a pulp character, being a radio & movie serial character, later comic book character. He never appeared in the pulps, tho the Lone Ranger did, but after his fame from his radio show.
@Darkwingsamural4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelRBrown-lh6kn The Spirit and the Green Hornet released in the same era as The Shadow, plus these characters keep crossing over with each other that's why I call the the Pulp Trinity
@MichaelRBrown-lh6kn4 жыл бұрын
@@Darkwingsamural pulp is not a time period, it refers to the pulp magazines. The Shadow is a product of the pulp magazines, the other two are not. The Shadow and Green Hornet have only met thru the recent Dynamite comics and I'm not aware of the Spirit crossing over with any other character other then The Rocketeer. Most pulp fans are pretty clear to not call characters who never appeared in the pulps as being "pulp".

Glad to see the TV guide cover showing the the other ‘Dynamic Duo’ ….. Keye Luke as Kato? Too cool for words The crossover of The Green Hornet and Batman on tv was legendary, as was the never ending fight between Kato and Robin…. The movie that came out recently was to me, well, meh! The serials look cool, but it’s the short lived TV show I’ll always remember…. Have you done a video on the TV Batman and Robin, Batgirl, and Green Hornet? If you haven’t, please do! Excellent video

Ahhhhhh yes so happy to see you finally tackling the Green Hornet! I always knew about the TV series mostly because of Bruce Lee, but it was Dynamite’s efforts comics wise that really made me fall in love with the character. I’ve seen a few recommendations on here but I’d really recommend three: the Kevin Smith Green Hornet (which is collected in one omnibus now), a crossover with The Shadow called Dark Nights, and a crossover with The Lone Ranger called Champions of Justice. All very good! Will you do one about The Shadow or The Spirit? I would love to see what interesting facts you could dig up about these classic characters! Keep up the great work!

Anne Nagel did not marry a doctor after her first husband killed himself. She married An Air Force Colonel, and while married to him she had an appendectomy. She was never married to that doctor. And an appendectomy is hardly unnecessary surgery.
