The AI restoration takes away from too much of the detail. For example, in the second video in the original version there are birds on the bottom right of the screen just before the shockwave reaches the camera at 0:33. In the AI restored version the birds are completely gone 0:47

I have an old VCR tape of this exact shot ( about 35 years old ) which clearly shows the birds flying by and a basically crystal clear video and image IMHO. SO...... what exactly is "AI" ? What does is actually do ?

​@@normkirk65the ai we're talking about is pretty much what we also call "deepfake". You program it with what you want videos to look like by giving it examples of videos that match your policy, and you run videos that do not match your policy and it alters them to match it. Sometimes that's just, "anything and high frame rate and high resolution", sometimes it's "the soldiers are arian and the victims are children"... The training set matters, a lot. You cannot show detail not in the original, you must add the claim "this corpus of details are from the same time and place" and if that claim is not true then you have a deepfake video.

I have no problem with this kind of AI stuff at all, especially whilst the original is also there to watch - an addition rather than a replacement. Two options are always going to be preferable to one.

Why is having an inferior option that's objectively worse in all meaningful metrics but also accelerates climate change preferable to one good option? In restaurants do you prefer having two dishes presented to you, one that the chef spat in, because, y'know, two options "always" better?

​@nonsequitor That's not a great analogy if you dont mind my saying (unless the saliva in the second dish happens to be beneficial for me in some way), and by that standard, all forms of power consumption would be off limits, including those which enable us to use platforms such as this one, to view the footage at all. Having very clean footage of the explosion itself presents no more problems than having the original footage (probably less in fact, due to no longer requiring telecine machines, nor the cleaning chemicals), and I doubt that this work was carried out using the original analogue source material. Also, it isn't fair to say that the footage is 'objectively worse by all meaningful metrics'. I can think of several instances for which the 4K footage would be advantageous, simply for aesthetic reasons, one being an increased and prolific use of very large screens, when image upscaling isn't sufficiently enhancing the resolution. That's at least one metric that would be meaningful, to anyone viewing on such a screen. Regards.

Before looks a lot better than after. AI is 99% vaporware. All you've done is removed detail and emitted the equivalent of driving from NY to Canada in carbon for a reduction in quality. Bravo. 🤦‍♂️ You could have achieved the same with basic noise reduction... which is all the "AI" did. This is the "zoom and enhance" meme for 2025.
