It‘s impossible to trigger a super eruption with nukes though. The process that makes a volcano erupt, especially a supervolcano, occurs many miles/km underneath in the magma chamber. It‘s super complex and involves gases, chemical reactions and rising pressures. Even if you detonated a nuke inside the magma chamber it probably wouldn‘t do anything other than vaporising some magma.

As the late astronomer Sir Patrick Moore wrote “if an advanced alien civilization visited Earth only to find a scorched desolate uninhabited planet, we (humans) shall only have ourselves to blame.” Such a prospect is at its strongest certainty since the end of the last Cold War and possibly since the Cuban Missile Crisis. We all thought the danger of nuclear war had gone away but with its sudden return in the last 3 years or so, time is running out to avoid it. As Sir Patrick also wrote “there may have been alien civilizations which have duly wiped themselves out, leaving behind radiation soaked death and it is tempting to believe Homo Sapiens will go the same way”. It is, certainly at the moment, hard to argue for the case that he was and is wrong.

Absurdly overestimated. Lets make a scenario. Russia has 1588 deployed warheads out of 4500 total. In day one it wont even be able to lauch all 1588. In retaliating attack nato can destroy most nukes that weren't used in day one. Based on command and logistics russia could launch 600 to 90p at best. Lets estimate its 900. 10 percent will fail. Another 20 to 40 will be intercepted. That leaves around 800. Absolute majority will be targeting military facilities. In order to destroy massive air bases and ports and industrial complexes you will need a lot of warheads. Some of corse will hit cities. Average 300 to 500 kt can kill half a million to a million in large cities like new York. Russia would use no more that 10 percent on cities. Its 80 warheads. So in the worst posibke outcome and warnings and preparations nato losses from 50 to 60 million dead out of 950 million population. Same for russia. So in this scenario like 90 to 100 million die not billions. But every year this number drops as number of decomisioned nukes growths. For example in 2023 450 warheads were dismantled. With this rate in less that 30 years alm nukes will be gone ofcorse no but they will decline in numbers

Chatgbt "A nuclear strike on Yellowstone would be unlikely to trigger a supervolcanic eruption. While a nuclear explosion could cause localized damage, the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone is vast, and the immense pressure needed to cause a supervolcanic eruption far exceeds what a nuclear detonation could achieve. Geological forces required for such an eruption develop over thousands of years and involve a complex balance of magma pressure and tectonic shifts. In short, while a nuclear strike would be devastating in other ways, it wouldn't necessarily cause the Yellowstone supervolcano to erupt."
