We take a trip down conspiracy lane to answer the question: Why has the Universal Pictures 1970 sci-fi classic "Colossus the forbin project" about artificial intelligence gone rogue been removed from all streaming and VOD platforms across the internet?
COLOSSUS The Forbin Project is available on BLU-RAY, but for how long? Get your copy before they "disappear." On Sale NOW - amzn.to/3D32nez
New Video: HARDWARE 1990 Sci-Fi AI Film pulled From Distribution!
• Sci-Fi AI Horror Movie...
The classic 1970 sci-fi film tells the story of Charles Forbin, a scientst who creates an AI "super computer" that is capable of independently controlling the U.S. national defense. But his dream becomes a stunning nightmare when it's discovered the Russians have built an equally sophisticated computer and that these two "doomsday machines", have linked and joined forces to rule over humanity.
The film was available on several streaming platforms as of six months ago but has since been quietly removed, so in this video we show you the reciepts and ask the question: why?

This is why physical media is more important than ever. Years ago, my friends told me to get into streaming services cuz I wouldn't have to buy blurays anymore cuz they could be saved _in the cloud._ Every one of them have complained to me over the years that movies and TV shows they had "bought" were no longer available. I told them, "I guess you really didn't buy it then, huh?" Oh---physical media is now disappearing. Best Buy no longer sells movies. Target and Walmart have said they are considering dropping movie sales.

Yes I found it as well well actually I was talking to the co-pilot GPT on Bing and it directed me there and I watched it and saw it as well. It was ironic that it was a LLM that guided me to it. You know I thought about something and I even chatted with the LLM about it and the only thing that we have to worry about when it comes artificial intelligence is basically to make sure that it does not get emotional and have self-will. There is what I believe is a erroneous concept that I've basically named AI mysticism. AI mysticism is just basically the erroneous concept that you make a computer big enough and complex enough it's just automatically going to wake up and be a parallel mentality to a human with its ambitions and mental states that have basically been a result of the development of first lower mental functions as you find them fish and reptiles and then finally later on the limbic system that you find a mammals and then of course our intelligence on the top of that. The systems that we are building are bypassing the lower levels of that evolutionary chain. we are just simply trying to create systems that do a lot of thinking or calculations that are a bit beyond what we can do ourselves but however the AI is still rather narrow in its functions and even if it gets to the point to where it is kind of like generally intelligent that does not mean it's going to have a will of its own and a sense of self and consciousness. I see what we really have to worry about is bad people using AI for nefarious purposes and we probably should make that a punishable offense with the death penalty.

Giving an AI you know very little about access to your entire military is just dumb though. I know we've had years and years of sci-fi about that idea. But let's be real, even if we didn't have all of this fiction about that idea. You'd have to be an absolute moron to do that, its asking for trouble really. Even if the AI was under control and nothing bad was ever going to happen, what about hacking? In the real world, we'd let AI make the decisions, those decisions would be vetted by humans and would then be executed by humans if accepted.

That statistic is especially impressive given that TG4 is an Irish language channel. (Irish is only spoken routinely by roughly 3% of the population.) The film was almost certainly shown as originally filmed (in English; no dubbing, _maybe_ subtitled into Irish, but unlikely) but this is nonetheless impressive as the channel would be the least watched of the Irish terrestrial channels and is probably less watched than the main British channels (BBC, ITV) and even the major satellite channels! Its biggest audience is probably for Gaelic sports fixtures. It's actually kind of a shame they don't have more viewers; as well as bilingual documentaries and their Westerns slot, it isn't unusual for them to show 'foreign' movies, as well as 'odd', but interesting nuggets like this.

@@itscodyblaine Given that AI is so talked about at the minute you're probably right. If they _have_ suppressed the original because a remake is in the works, I'd take that as a bad sign. If the remake is decent, the two versions would be inclined to each reinforce the other, symbiotically; but if it's 'the usual tripe', the 1970 version is only likely to make it look worse by comparison!

I stumbled across this film in an unusual way. I'm a HUGE Planet of the Apes fan & when I watched the 3rd film "Escape from the Planet of the Apes", I fell in love with the villain, Otto Hasslein. He was mad, bad & dangerous to know but I couldn't help but love him. Years later I'm flipping channels on TV & Colossus was on one night. Within literally less than a minute of watching it, I realised "Hey, Forbin IS Hasslein!". Both played by the insanely talented (and handsome 😏) German actor Eric Braeden. Upon realising, I ordered a DVD copy of Colossus immediately & watched it. Absolutely brilliant & terrifying, it's INSANE how a film from 1970 warned us about our current situation with AI & technology. Physical media is ALWAYS the way to go! ❤

Nothing is sacred anymore. Nothing that ever gained popular notoriety is safe from bs "modern audience" reboots and remakes that outright moot or destroy the integrity of the storytelling. Doesn't matter who stars in em, no matter what nostalgia they bait, the writers want to inject their own subjective takes on the world and put them front-seat to the story. I remember watching this as a kid and a few years back I looked for it and found the original version on KZbin and watched it, so I was disappointed to hear it was no longer available there. One of the scenes I distinctly remembered as a kid was no longer in the version I saw on KZbin, was Colossus learning to talk. In the movie, Colossus understood human speech, but had type out its responses on the overhead screen or teletype or computer. Dr. Forbin added a speaker to the console, then typed a few lines into the computer and Colossus began just babbling nonsense as Dr. Forbin walks to the door, turns out the light and closes the door. The next scene shows where the previous one left off, all is quite, the door opens, Dr. Forbin turns on the lights, greets Colossus like he does every morning, and instead of text streaming across a printout as it previously has, Colossus says, "Good Morning Dr. Forbin. I recall how eerie that was, and it stuck in my mind as THAT was how AI's would learn to speak. Anyhow, I used to work in several movie theaters as a kid, and I was totally familiar with films getting edited and scenes getting cut out, or things changing due to directors tastes, but I just thought that was odd that particular scene was missing. Like others who saw this movie long ago in the theaters in 1970, it seemed to have been a warning, a harbinger of things to come. Designed long long ago, computers were fashioned to "think", crudely at first, but in due time this source of "thought" would expand quickly. The idea of the availability of viewing this movie being "tampered with" is fully within current AI abilities...but as commonly feared, we mere humans literally cannot fathom higher metrics of thought. As such we ultimately cannot decipher higher forms of thought, forever a mystery.

In many ways, one could think of Colossus: The Forbin Project almost as a prequel for "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (the original). In the first, AI takes over, and guides humanity toward a controlled future. In "The Day The Earth Stood Still", we see an alien visitor coming to Earth from a culture like in "Colossus", where the robots, like Gort, under advanced AI, simply will not allow humanity (or their race, anyway), to be violent any more, and their humanoid ambassador, Klaatu, extends that warning to the people of Earth.

I remember this film. It was a little frightening. Colossus was watching everything and everyone. Even listening to everyone’s conversations. Forbin even had to ask Colossus to stop watching him while he was having sex. Colossus even supervised and televised public executions. The classic The Outer Limits episode O.B.I.T. had a similar theme, although an alien race was behind the creation of the machine that watches and listens to everyone, learning secrets and using the information to cause discord in the human race. Science run amok isn’t a new plot line, as the video mentions Frankenstein, a ghost story and science run amok because Frankenstein’s creation was able to not only possess superhuman abilities but learn, as well. And the only emotion that Frankenstein’s creation learned was revenge and how to use it. Artificial Intelligence is a double edged sword. While we can only be entertained and perhaps enlightened, there is no doubt that in science, it can be perverted. Unchecked, it can and will cause great harm either with or without the human factor.

About five years ago, I don't remember exactly when, I sent a tweet to Eric Braeden saying that I'd love to see a sequel to "The Forbin Project." He actually responded, and said something like "There may be an announcement soon!" But then I never heard anything else. So I wonder if the idea was dropped, but now someone else is picking it up again.

It's very possible. With the talk about AI in the press, you'd think Colossus would be one of the top films they'd consider remaking.

@@JohnDlugosz Director Robert Rodriguez was approached some time ago to consider directing a reboot of the classic Sci- Fi " Fantastic Voyage" , which was originally directed by Richard Fleischer I believe. The original stared Raquel Welch, Donald Plesence, Stephen Boyd , Arthur Kennedy and a couple other big stars of the time. This new remake was to keep the original story line similar and utilize state of the art CGI to do the special effects. I have no idea if it will get the go ahead.

Thanks for your thought-provoking video... Maybe I just missed you mentioning this possible explanation but perhaps Google or Bing or whichever search engine you used to look for the movie -- a terrifying depiction of dangerous tech run amok -- is owned by a corporation that is trying to market similar tech... It wouldn't be the first time that commercial interests thought suppressing negative publicity about their products would be more effective than directly dealing with their potential hazards. Also, if vested interests ARE systematically eliminating anti-AI media like "Colossus" from the public domain, they've got A LOT more work to do...and that's just popular sci-fi movies... Then there are books, essays, academic research papers, songs, etc. Of course, it's possible. It's just difficult. And now that we've revealed that we're on to our omniscient and omnipotent machine overlords of the future, they have sent cyborg assassins back in time who are currently thumbing through phone books looking up our addresses... (You're not sure if that was a reference to Skynet or to Google, right?)

Having no insights into what actually happened when they pulled the streaming options. My safeat bet is a very mundane one. My bet is that there is something in the film covered by some rights holder. And the studio can't be bothered to renew the necessary contracts to keep it on streaming. Especially as the film is very niche and a hard sales pitch for audiences. The latter also being my reasoning against any potential remake. A remake would have to be done to fit todays market. And I doubt that they would let it be the stageplay battle of wits it truly is. They would have inject more physical direct confrontations. More potential for fireball explosions. Firefights between true AI believers and military forces in the hacked missile silos. If I were to speculate, there are a very few I would trust with a project like this. One being filmschool favourite David Fincher. He can be budget conscious and single minded enough to keep the confined scope of the story. The other candidate I can think of is Alex Garland. Who can keep it very hard sci fi. Keep the spectacular style without distracions.

I’ve personally read 3 scripts for intended remakes. All 3 toned down the Cold War elements while 2 had North Korea in place of Russia and the third had other military AI’s working in tandem. The remakes been in development for over a decade.

#2 agreed, My guess is that a studio is preparing to remake the film as it is more relevant today. They will re-release it after the new film is out. The 1984 Lynch Dune dropped off of streaming services before the release of the new Dune film. The original came back to streaming a few weeks after Dune part 2 was released.

It could be more sinister. Universal could option the exclusive rights to Colossus to any company for a period of time with the stipulation that the original film is yanked from distribution. Then they just sit on it and wait for a bid. We will see this more and more with AI/supercomputer films in the future as the sub-genre heats up.

I just rewatched this yesterday. I googled it and your video was at the top of the results. I have the blu ray (it's a double feature blu ray with Journey to the Far Side of the Sun). I noticed the stock Universal sound FX in the film were later used in the Six Million Dollar Man and a lot of the actors in this went on to popular sitcoms later or tv in general. The Colossus Logo in the film sort of looks like the AOL logo. I always liked the movie and I'm wondering why it's not brought up more given AI is such a hot topic now. Demon Seed is another 70's AI type film that seems largely "forgotten".
