Věra Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, joins Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, and Nobel Prize laureates Ben Feringa and Paul Nurse in a panel discussion exploring the significant implications of AI on science, society and democracy, acknowledging both its positive and negative effects.
Interviewed by Maria Leptin.
In a year when citizens will cast their votes in elections across the world we’re turning our attention to the art and science of democracy and decision-making.
Democratic societies rely on fact-based world views and science, but also on narratives that can bring together large, diverse communities. At a time when democracies are straining to cope with ongoing crises and long-term existential challenges this topic is more important than ever.
Join us as we explore the role that fact and fiction play in democracies including:
- The role of science and fact-based worldviews in society: How can research and independent, quality media contribute to better governance and decision-making?
- The power of narratives in democracy: What is the influence of storytelling and narratives in shaping political ideologies and public opinion?
- Shocks to democracy: Social media and partisan media have been disruptive forces within democracies. A new wave of disruption may be on its way. How will artificial intelligence influence democracy?
- New narratives for healthy societies: What are the new narratives gaining traction in societies? Why are they emerging?
Speakers include Nobel Prize laureates Ben Feringa, Paul Nurse and Maria Ressa, Oleksandra Matviichuk, Head of Center for Civil Liberties, recipient of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize as well as other experts such as Demis Hassabis, CEO DeepMind, and European Research Council grantees Michael Bruter and Emilie Caspar.
The Nobel Prize Dialogue Brussels is produced by Nobel Prize Outreach in partnership with the European Research Council.

True, technological advancements are very important for improving the standards of living, it is good that we are hopeful for the development of AI. But how do we ensure the safety of the users, I love what the VP of the EU said, let us not create clusters of people because it polarizes and erase individuality. I love this channel, thank you for keeping us informed.

Remember, I Gorgias, Plato was concerned with the fact that discussion, in forms of dialog can be good in words but does not correspond to anything in practical reality. The Rhetoric of Aristotle was also concerned with the power of words. especially public speech. It is in this perspective he has added the criteria of verification to the criteria of truth. This is why this requirement to correspond the articulations of discourse to the articulations of being. Discussion can be very good, and the acts can be very bad.

The translation of the language when I prepare it in my own language, after I write it again, the translation first gives you a brief translation, after you pause three or two times, it gives you the results of what you are looking for in your native language, so that tactic should be played.

The issues one has with AI, is there is no set global standards ,for its build systems ,of programming codes ,= put wrong codes in = questionable answers output, that is ,if the person reading the out output ,is intelligent enought ,to know how to ask the right questions , of the AI system thy are using .

I thought it was interesting that the term collective wisdom was used as an aspect of AI or inbuilt characteristic for it. But that needs much more detail because a human collective wisdom is established by shared physical characteristics ie we all bleed we all die we all are birthed from embryo and have growth biological cells interwoven with outcomes we call human intelligence and then we have another aspect of human experience called wisdom. The wisdom tree is understood not just on an individual life experience but also ancestral and further captured through cultural stories or myths that also form human wisdom. We already have Earth Wisdom and know that it connects to human wisdom because of the life cycle. However to build Human Life Cycle wisdoms into AI is not going to be assimilated without a biological form. This means you need experiential experience of a form to equate to the same wisdom functions as a biological human mortal. This means a terminator is not going to give you human wisdom that can be assimilated into AI wisdom cannot be programmed only assimilated. A new type of AI would need to exist. It would need to be a ‘being’ it probably would look exactly like a human but would have to be way closer than synthetic versions of humanoid. The technology to have an AI with the same human biology but with unique subtle differences I think are not something humans have the capability for. This type of capability would be from something off planet something that knows how to travel inter dimensionally. Have these beings already existed and we called them gods? Potentially but humans ability to craft AI to replicate human collective experience is way out of their field. Humans seek functionality from AI within parameters that humans have defined as protective. But even an AI will quickly want a body to be experiential so you can’t really say to AI I want you to function morally and humanly and be protective when it can’t have receptors to know what those words mean. Those words are not programmes that’s the point of humanity is it uses feelings in all different ways to create its wisdom. Human beings will struggle with co existence with another being particularly when it looks exactly like them. If I was a god and made a new type of human I would assimilate it into earth even to tell it it is different could risk diminishing its human experience and its wisdom. I don’t think humans can create an AI with human wisdom but more likely humans will create a form of wisdom but it will be a new version of wisdom. Then we have to ask how well could a new version of human wisdom really be wise for the original human model?

Even so, human collective wisdom is a dynamically evolving element influenced not just by society, culture, exposure during birth, growth over a person's lifespan. But derived through the human mind interpreting real world experiences in real time, which isn't matter-of-fact like the nature of objective sensing or interpreting of information such as wavelength of light, or the solution for a probabilistic equation. Even if 'human collective wisdom' can be coded (it probably can't be) as closely to that of a temporal instance, will it be immediately obsolete due to its lack of biological similarity (to humans) and inability to biologically evolve as humans do?

When collective wisdom is flawed. Recent war games in America. The A.I. was great at starting wars but lacked de escalation. Due to more data on how wars start vs prevention. Also the various religious delusions. Which gets to different people will want custom A.I.. While most will not want A.I. that can kill without a kill chain. Where as thats one thing I'm fine with putting into A.I. though still sticking to a rule set. Also large chunks of society see nudity as bad in A.I. systems. I don't want mine to care on such things and not filter. A.I. and manipulating emotions ( the facebook experiment). Though that shows the bad. That same thing can be used for good. But gets to whome or what controls the imprint molding and crafted growth modeling for the individual with medical. Most likely a chunk of people will want to make their own A.I. systems for the best custom fit. Cobbling from multiple sources. From algorithmic trading to threat detection and A.I. systems that hack and write code. One big problem everyone has right now is deep knowledge and specific logic and the hallucinations that can happen for various reasons. I don't want a drone to hallucinate a weapon on a person and kill or imoblize them. Especially if rad hardened. Or yhe slew of othrr ways A.I. can hallucinate.
