Software used:
Flowframes (with RIFE algorithm)
After Effects
I used Flowframes (which is free or "pay what you want" app with RIFE algorithm) to smooth every scene that has ED-209 stop-motion. I've done it twice: first 8x times, then 4x times.
After that, I took the 767.232 FPS smoothed footage, imported it into After Effects and applied "Force Motion Blur" with samples cranked to 40. It used the smoothed footage and turned it into motion blur, back at 23.976 FPS.
And I've done it 31 times separately with each scene, to avoid blurred cuts between scenes. Also I had to mask out the live-action parts I didn't want to be blurred.
Bugs:
1) muzzle flashes sometimes blur the whole scene;
2) the very last frame of each scene is not blurred, because the smoothed footage is shorter than the original footage, but that's not very noticeable in motion.

65k views, I'm stunned... Thank you so much! I want to remind you though, that this was inspired by Ethax's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/omXVYYGCpKmXo9U And they did it with much higher quality than me. They used Photoshop to (probably) combine the frames, but for the life of me I have no idea how that's done.

This guy gets it, 60fps is not the way, looks even weirder, all it was missing was motion blur.

That's the thing you can make one yourself now and just the fact that you can do it with your phone doesn't make it any less an art form. The mistakes are just racing stripes.

It looks so realistic now 😲 Also, fun fact: take a look at 1:34, when Robo is descending the stairs. You can see the door frame and stairs through his body. That's because those stairs are actually a model, built to ED-209's scale, and Robo has been superimposed on it - but to prevent the matte lines from showing up, the footage had to be made partially transparent. The same thing can be seen in "The Empire Strikes Back", where snowspeeder cockpits are also partially transparent 🙂

Those were the ways to make things possible :) Now we have CGI, but to make it convincing enough, we have to try REALLY hard. To add IMPERFECTIONS to it. Or else it looks too pristine, or in some cases - to the Uncanny Valley we go

This is perfect! I saw a guy use AI interpolation to up the frame rate, but it still didn't look right. It's all in the motion blur.

As others have said, very nicely done. You struck the perfect balance between smoothing the motion and preserving the 'physical' feel of the stop motion. This method would probably produce a better-looking 60fps than other versions as well.

You made it nice and still looks like the original. Some other guy that made it look like some silly game running at 180 fps too much. Capping it at low fps while smoothing it made it awesome, would love to see a remaster like this.

Never understood why Ed rolls when he falls. If his head did weigh enough to make that happen, he would have already fallen as soon as he looked down to check the steps. His fall should have just involved his right foot slipping forward, and the rest of him sliding down the stairs after it, on his back the whole time. The forward roll just doesn't follow the laws of physics. If they wanted him to pitch forward they could have just had him stub his toe rather than slip (knocking his right leg back instead of forward). Still, makes the fall a lot more interesting and funny. Plus provides a reason for him to end up on his back at the landing section of the stairs, instead of further around the corner. I just wish they'd added a bit of progressive damage to the stair banister and wall, whilst Ed kicks and flails around. Would have sold the moment a bit more.
@Optimus97
@Optimus97 Жыл бұрын
Funny fact - the fall and rolling was actually physical, of a ragdoll-like ED-209 prop. It even already had a motion blur recorded. )) But I get what you're trying to say

Actually I think it's really good but doesn't detract from the comparison between his work and toland's cinematography.👌 Personally I'd like to see a lot of his "gomotion" taken back to clunker "stop-motion" like I used to do.😁 I just watched his documentary on Tubi.
