Art is human, it's a timeless language that everybody knows. AI cannot replicate the feeling of creating simply out of passion, AI generates soulless imitations of art without any thought being put into it. Art is how we share love, machines cannot replace artists due to how inherently human art is.

By itself, it cannot. That is true, and in all honesty, only artists can truly bring those ideas and passions to life. That said, we cannot reject the potential for good that AI art generators can bring to artists, especially when used as a tool or as a medium to a piece that we wanted. AI art is not sentient, they are only a mere reflection of whoever uses this tool. Whether it may be used for good or evil, only the user can decide. Somebody once pointed out that the key difference between another artist and AI art is that humans are able to look at a piece of art and take inspiration from it and interpret it as something new in a unique style, thus making human art always unpredictable and ever changing. AI Art can only copy and replicate- therefore giving the result of almost an edit or a filtered image as it depends on the pre-existing art to be its medium.
@elijaheumags5060 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily copy. It can only infer and create something new out of the dataset that it was trained on, mainly to find patterns before assigning it to a variable, then having all those variable connect to each other in a matrix, like a latent space. For example, an AI model has been trained to look at apples, so whenever they see an apple, then it would be assigned to a variable, then it is then trained to recognize glass, so it is then assigned to a variable. When we ask that AI model to generate a glass apple, all it would do is to take the idea of what an apple looks like and what glass looks like, and fuse them to make a coherent image. The video from Vox regarding AI art explains it better than I could. It can create something new, but only from the knowledge that it has inferred, so its somewhat limited in that manner. And let's not forget, AI art generators are NOT SENTIENT. They can only make an output when a human activates it and types in the prompt. Now whether it is useful would depend on who is using it, and for artists, it could be a boon if used properly, since its going to help them with all the tedious parts in making art and helping them generate new ideas for their pieces. Of course jerks would ruin this for their own ego, profit, or some trolling against the Art community just to drink their tears. However not everyone in that space are like that, quite frankly, they are the vocal minority. There are artists too who think otherwise and are doing all sorts of things to make models that are ethically sourced. And they do respect artists in regards to the usage of their art in their models, and some of them are even contributing their own art to improve the models to help out the artists. It all comes down to who uses it, may it be for good or evil.

Thing is, AI NEEDS thousands and thousands and THOUSANDS of images to even start to learn how to make something that looks like a comprehensive piece of art. Artists know their worth and, rightfully so, can charge up into the hundreds for even one piece of art. You would need millions of dollars JUST to cover the cost of paying artists for their work to train your AI (not mentioning the cost of making and running these things), and it would also take a huge amount of time to get the art and feed it to your AI. @undefinederror40404 Жыл бұрын
That's completely understandable, I had that feeling to for a while. My teacher used AI as a main subject his course this block, and art specific AI came up as well. He compared it to his experiences as a musician, in that field electronic music was seen as a threat too but in the end it hasn't destroyed all other genres. Or when recording machines came out, people thought it would be the end for live music as everything could be played anywhere at demand. But now.. yes, we don't usually have live bands in pubs or at most events anymore, but concerts are still a huge thing. Some norms and industry standards have been erased, some people indeed had their livelyhood taken away.. but, new opportunities were also created. It really scks that your dad behaved this way, I wonder if he really realized that he was behaving like he was more proud of a machine than if you- surely that should not be a parent's intent. But I hope that these examples can give you some relief. The way AI art is build now, based on stealing, has to be stopped. If we can manage that, it can become a tool for us just like drawing tablets and copy-paste functions. And even if your fam doesn't see or understand, I think your work has a heck of a lot more value than AI stuff. I get disheartened too sometimes, I'm nowhere near as good at art as I'd like to be.. but let's hold on and not let them take our creative outlets away :)
@elijaheumags5060 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, in one aspect, your dad is wrong about this. Yes, AI art will get better to the point that it becomes indistinguishable from the real thing, but at the same time, there is still a need for artists in this world, even if AI art proliferates. Either they'll be the ones to guide the AI art generators to the outcome that people would like, or it will help make art easier in a sense that it would help them generate ideas, help them with poses, colors, backgrounds, etc., or even grant them a new medium to mix AI art with their own hand to create new pieces never before seen or realized. Not to mention that people will turn to artists mainly due to the low quality and directionless (and sometimes messy) results that AI art has when produced in massive quantities. People will get bored to it and feel like its just tiring and uninspired in general. Then people would have a newfound appreciation with Artists as they would rather like a piece of art that actually speaks to them and has been put in a great amount of skill, effort, heart, and soul into it. Ones that have a definite vision and idea behind it rather than just being good looking. We can argue at length on whether AI art is art nor not, but its mostly subjective at this point. But there's one thing that is true: Artists still matter, and AI art generators are merely just tools. It is up to us to see if its going to be used for good or evil.

Not every piece made by AI has to be soulless, for there are people who actually use AI art generators to either ease their workflow, help them generate new ideas, or to actually make new pieces that were never before conceived. AI is not sentient nor creative by itself. It still needs a human, and more specifically an artist, to actually guide the output to the desired piece that they want. It is merely a toll, and only the user can define it, whether it may be for good or evil.

I agree with you completely. There is much more heart and work put into art made by any *person*, but that effort can never be reflected in AI. It's like a soulless copy of something, somewhere, on the internet.

Plus it’s more rewarding and exciting when an artist is done with a piece that they are proud of. Using A.I is like a cheap way, even if it’s faster, it isn’t done by themselves but by another artists art style. And they won’t learn to do their own art by relying on A.I. Also A.I isn’t always giving the best results, I only use A.I for fun but not to cheat.

I think the worst issue about art AI is the fact that it steals artwork to train itself. If the AIs were built on just images they had permission to use, I would have no problem with it. But currently, art AI is profiting off the exploitation of human artists, and not even paying them any compensation for it, not to talk about the violation of rights and consent. It's disgusting to me how the moment an artist dies, tech bros rush to use their art, regardless of whether or not consent is being violated. They are like vultures waiting for human artists to keel over and pass. Are we not humans with a soul? Is money and pride the only thing that matters? Kim Jung Gi's work was swooped upon within 3 days of his passing, against his family's wishes. Just one of the many cases I can recall. Edit: replies will be responded to, so feel free. I want to share my view on this. Artists should be protected. Edit again: I just re-checked and AI trainers didn't even wait 3 days to use Kim Jung Gi's art without his family's consent. They did it the immediate day after he passed. What level of cruelty does it take for somebody to do that?

"Do you think AI can evolve to become sensible to art?" the actual ejecution of AI makes that imposible, Because (and it's time for all of us to know exactly how AI works): AI consist of two neural networks: the "GENERATOR" and the "DISCRIMINATOR". The generator takes random input and tries to generate an image that resembles the images in the data set that it learned about during its training. The discriminator, on the other hand, attempts to distinguish the images generated by the generator from the actual images. During training, the generator tries to generate more and more similar images to fool the discriminator, while the discriminator tries to learn to distinguish the images generated by the generator from the real images. As training continues, the generator becomes more effective at generating similar images, and the discriminator becomes more effective at distinguishing between generated and real images. In short, image generation AIs use adversarial generative networks to "learn" how to generate images that resemble the images in the training data set and then generate new images from random inputs. in other words, is just trying to make identical pictures to the original in the data set, but on it's trying end ups just creating images that the discriminator thinks that are just fine... This is the current ejecution, the only way for AI to be sensible to art, is to change and start form 0 a brand new way to recreate human inteligence. This also prooves that AI art is theft, because to train the models, they need to use literally the composition of your picture to decompose it into data through this adversarial generative networks. Like someone who stole your fruits from your basket to put them into a blender making a smoothie, and then telling you that's not theft, because the smoothie doesn't looks like the fruits of your basket lol

AI art will never have that human aspect people talk about. Even if it becomes indistinguishable from another artist, ppl will always prefer the human made version. That being said, ai can be an incredibly powerful tool to spring board work off of, and lighten work loads although in our current system this is mainly used for exploitation.
@yellowtintin4778 Жыл бұрын
I think treating ai as it’s own artist is silly, it’s a tool that is used. No one says putting a filter on an image makes the image a new original work crafted by the filter. Ai is the same, although a lot of people will just post the ai raw without any individual input and call it a day, rather than blame the ai we should blame the lazy artist who decided not to utilise the ai in a productive way. This doesn’t take into account the stollen art used as training data and the inherently exploitative manner in which ai is trained but it’s a little too late now to stop it.

also is about consent! I consented for my art to be used by other people so they can study and learn from it as well as have fun. What I Did Not consent to was for my art to be fed to an algorithm that's going to replicate it over and over without any substance, and most of the time charge/sell it.

I believe ai can be used as a medium and tool rather than just to cop out quick pieces. Like tracing and heavy referencing can do when you need to get a quick idea down and then add your own personal touches to make it unique. Its just that its currently in its beginning stages amd can be easily manipulated and abused to make a quick buck. Thats how a lot of things start out, but I can assure you that its just a process that a lot of technical advances go through. Like what the start of digital art had to go through and even the start of photography

Many pro-AI-art folks make 4 main mistakes in my view in their defense. 1. Claiming that humans and AI create art styles in the same way, 2. Claiming that AI art is for final projects, 3. The main selling points of art are speed and price, and 4. AI art has just as much thought put into it as human art via the prompts. Firstly, #1 ties a lot into this video. They claim that both AI art and humans just take pieces of other people's styles and integrate them into their own. While this is technically true, the way they do this is very different. AI just takes the pieces and puts them together like a collage, applying no critical thinking and very little pattern analysis. Meanwhile, humans take the paper cut outs for a collage and remake them themselves. Sure, they aren't perfect copies, because humans make mistakes and have different ways of doing things, but they learn to work around these mistakes and create something beautiful and their own before putting the pieces together. Each little piece has thought, instead of the whole maybe having thought put into it if the person who created the prompt put thought into it. Even so, the robot can't make every little detail meaningful. The human can. Secondly, AI art is much better suited for concept art than final products. Humans are limited in creativity, but are very good at precision in art. AI can come up with wildly creative concept art due to being inevitably somewhat abstract and psychedelic, even if it's unintentional. As such, AI can give humans ideas that the human likely wouldn't've thought of on their own due to access to every piece of media and being flawed in thinking (Ironically helping it in idea generation, as it frees its "mind"). However, it can't make the art precise or meaningful, nor can it intentionally put these ideas in. As such, it's better for concept art than the precision required for final pieces. Thirdly, this final one will be short and sweet: Some do want their art quickly and cheaply over skillfully, but for the most part people will always prefer the skill over the speed. Finally, AI art cannot have as much thought into it. This has been touched on by 2 of the 3 prior paragraphs. In human art, a thinking, creating being is able to put thought into every stroke of the pencil. They make choices every move they make, every line they jot down, every idea they throw away. They have total control over every aspect. Furthermore, it requires more effort, so generally it will mostly be only those who have something to say will be willing to put in the effort. Through sort of a natural-selection-type deal, only those who put thought in will make it past the learning curve. Meanwhile, AI art is too easy. Anyone can do it, and that means everyone will do it. People will no longer need to have something to say or have to put thought into it, because it's effortless. They just type in some words and boom, there it is. There's no more learning curve to filter out the people who would make art without any thought put into it. Furthermore, a thinking being no longer controls every aspect of the piece. A robot just automatically controls it. As such, overall the piece will be less thoughtful because the parts won't have thought put in, only the final piece if the person who created the prompt put in the little effort required to put thought into the prompt. Overall, I believe that AI art has a use. However, as humans, we are foolish creatures who always use things in the exact wrong ways (Like NFTs, which could have been useful if we didn't use them the way we did, or cryptocurrency, for a similar reason.) AI art could be genuinely useful, but we're not using it in a useful way. As AI art can have limited thought in it, we are putting limited thought into using AI art. We shouldn't be using AI to try and replace one of the few jobs that people actively dream of having. Instead, it should be a tool for those people to help them with this dream.

Honestly this sucks. Digital artists already have a hard time in the world trying to prove that digital art is just as valid as physical/traditional art. Now that AI could potentially take over, it's going to be even harder to show genuine digital art and have it not be compared to AI or be stolen or replicated by AI. It'll probably get so bad that digital art in general will not be seen as genuine anymore but physical and traditional art will be the only art taken seriously. And while I'm happy about the potential of the market growing for physical art such as ceramics, painting, sculpting, etc. It sucks that making digital art that doesn't need physical materials to be made could now be no longer valid art to display in art fairs, galleries or competitions because of the potential of AI art fraud. There have already been articles about AI art winning actual art competitions, taking away opportunities for real artists that put in the time to work on their art style and portfolios. This is a future I'm scared of for many small business digital artists that can't afford constantly buying physical art supplies and their only way to make and learn about art is drawing on a cheap computer and cheap drawing tablet with free programs like medibang, blender, etc.

Through looking at art done by a human, it makes you wonder about the artist themselves. What were their intentions? How long have they taken to do it? What sparked them to make this for said amount of time? If the AI image has no human who actually drew it by hand, you don't have these questions for someone who doesn't even exist, and it therefore will not engage you as much. There's a limited space to wonder on the contrary.

About the style, personally i dont think you "need" a personal artstyle, but most people like to have 1 singular style, theres absolutely nothing wrong with that, personally i have 2 styles, one thats a bit more realistic, and one thats a bit more chibi, just my 2 cents.
@newandroid2673 Жыл бұрын
Personally, my issue with it is that the AI isn't drawing, it's replicating. The way an AI 'draws' is essentially a glorified stamp, taking bits from other artwork and placing them on a page. It doesn't know what it means, it's just copy and pasting, which is why you frequently see where the original logo or watermark is, albeit blurred or obscured by another part of a stolen drawing. If a human were to take a bunch of pictures and copy paste pieces of them together into a Frankenstein's monster of other people's hard work and effort, they would be rediculed and labelled an art thief. I see no reason why AI should be treated any differently. When a human 'copies' an art style, they are copying the art style, not the drawing. They look at the finished product and try to figure out the technique behind it so they can use the *technique*, not the drawing itself. If they do redraw the drawing it's only practice to find out those techniques and it's never claimed to be an original work because it's not. Even when taking reference, you never copy poses, or compositions, or items of clothing, or etc exactly and turn it all into an original piece.

drawing it yourself rather than generating it by a machine is a much more consistent and fun process. i don't think ai would be helpful to create full pieces of artwork because it could never replicate your exact thoughts and creativity in your mind. also, writing a wikipedia page worth of prompts to generate a specific kind of art sounds really dumb, it feels more harder than drawing by yourself
@blenderpain8249 Жыл бұрын
This kind of reminds me of the invention of the camera and the capability of taking an exact image replica. Before cameras, if people wanted image replicas, they would probably need to sit down and be painted for their portraits or sit down and paint a scenery for hours/days/weeks/months/years. When the camera was invented, people found a more efficient and more accurate way to make images of real life. There was no need to paint anymore. But that didn't stop people from making more paintings. There was just a shift in expression. Art was no longer about replicating real life, it is more focused on expression rather than form. And thus many types of "modern" art emerged. Abstract art, cubism, fauvism, surrealism, pop art etc. Maybe something similar will happen. Since AI is like a camera that can replicate art styles. Maybe our art will be more based on something else.
@blenderpain8249 Жыл бұрын
Remember, these types of images are just compiled data. We've invented a really good algorithm that can compile images better than google ever can. As of now, AI is not that sentient so it is quite impossible for it to create anything new. It needs new data (in this case, artworks, images) from humans. But one day, when it becomes sentient, and can make things according to its own experiences, I can accept what it has created as art.

As a more musically inclined person than an art inclined person, I like the think of it as if AI started creating music. Would there be any real meaning behind it? No. It would have no feeling. There would be no way a person could relate to an AI created song because it’s made by a robot and not a real person. They could steal other peoples music but it would still never be theirs.

AI does have an art style. It is called photo realistic. Since the most consistent style and training data are all photos the AIs are mostly trying to draw things realistically. So when you ask it draw a heavily stylized image it struggles more than if you ask for photo realism.
