AI tool spots cancers missed by doctors | BBC News

An AI tool tested by the NHS successfully identified tiny signs of breast cancer in 11 women which had been missed by human doctors.
The tool, called Mia, was piloted alongside NHS clinicians and analysed the mammograms of over 10,000 women.
Most of them were cancer-free, but it successfully flagged all of those with symptoms, as well as an extra 11 the doctors did not identify.
At their earliest stages, cancers can be extremely small and hard to spot.

​@@strnglhldThis is scary but it can be managed responsibly and job loss won't have to be a negative. When tractors were invented, everyone was panicking farmers would be out of jobs, and they were, however new more qualified jobs came, repairing tractors, making new tractor technology, managing and driving the tractors, etc. It's a bit different this time, AI is advancing too fast and it's too impactful on pretty much all job sectors but it's undeniable that productivity of human work will spike massively across many fields and that generally should be a positive, it depends on how governments manage it. For example Americans are probably fucked, but Europeans in the EU will probably be fine.

@@maximusasauluk7359 Why will Europeans be fine? I saw a similar thing with outsourcing in my lifetime. Now, calling a company’s customer service gets you to someone overseas 95% of the time. I’m already seeing even more customer service and tech support jobs replaced by AI, so now, not even the offshored customer service jobs are safe.

They haven't cured anything, and these tools are not practical because the technology they are dependent upon is legacy... You are using AI with x rays :P You are going to have your statistically inaccurate LLM using inaccurate photographs to predict cancer :P It just doesn't seem practical... Now if you want to talk to LLM that is one thing, but I wonder if this is just a diversion from real research that could benefit... You do realize x-rays kill you :P
