In this video I go head to head in a music theory showdown against artificial intelligence.
The AI is powered by GPT-4 by Open AI. On screen prompts are actual results from GPT-4, but edited for on-screen brevity. Spoken prompts were added during the edit for humor and personality, aside from the Vivaldi joke, which the AI added itself during the video export.

Dumb thing is definitely wrong about the chromatic mediant. My understanding (and I went through years of music education without ever being told what one was, and finally worked it out by Googling when people started asking me about them) is that a chromatic mediant is an alteration of either the mediant or the submediant by moving it up or down a half step AND/OR reversing the tonality (though obvs if you raise the mediant a half step you get a IV chord, so they don't count). So a chromatic mediant in C major could be Eb, Ebm, Ab, Abm, Bb or Bbm. I really hope I'm right about that or I have to take a big chunk out of my latest video 😬

Give that AI Bot a copy of The Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns by Sloninsky and a copy of The Lydian Chromatic Concept by George Russell and tell it to come back tomorrow and try again. It will run away screaming "Does not compute!", "Does not compute!"!!!!

I've actually heard quite a few versions of Summertime that start off going from i to IV. Ella Fitzgerald did one, and Herbie Mann did one that was sampled in Sublime in their song Doin' Time (that people often mistakenly call Summertime, so its millions of listens might have confused the computer.) I agree those aren't the chords of the original Porgy and Bess version, though.

@@JoshWalshMusic It's almost like they don't go to the V and kind of split the initial Im6 chord out into i and IV is how I hear it. The third of the IV is the 6 of the m6. It gives it this sort of spooky unresolved feeling because it doesn't have the movement of going to the V.

Correct, median = middle, and it’s named that because it’s half way between the root and the five (both major and minor 3rds are considered mediants.)
