Expat here who's lived in mainland China for about 8 years. There are plenty of people here who speak candidly about the government, including sensitive topics, and aren't nervous, much less fearful to do so. Regardless, the simple fact that most westerners have an exceedingly hard time wrapping their head around is that the Chinese government has enjoyed vast majority approval ratings from its citizens for decades, and this is based on WESTERN research (e.g. from Harvard, PEW, to name a few). Frankly, it's hard to blame them given the mind-boggling transformation the country has undergone the past 40 years. So you don't really know what you're talking about, and clearly have never been to China or talked to many mainlanders, if any. Please inform yourself more broadly about China and don't just consume western media - even better, go to China or talk to real Chinese people while maintaining an open mind (don't just ask biased questions which clearly reveal you think the Chinese government is evil).

That event made Ai a public intellectual and an enemy of the gouvernement. By the way, his father Ai Qing was a great poet recognized by the gouvernement. But he is definitely wrong to say that there are still many people living in the dark in China. Maybe he should interviewed thousands of homeless people in the Sates instead? Artists live in dreams, and I found Weiwei lives in his own narration for too long. There are surely ups and downs for China. The Party made mistakes. Yet the dark age his father went through was gone. And China is impoving, getting better everyday. I hope he could visit Xinjiang, Tibet when he could(as me). Ai is a very controversial figure in China. His father, though, has been in Chinese student's literary textbook, a very famous novelist. Socialist China, not communist China. Make basic concept right, Trevor, before your make it public! Finding someone fitting the Western type of human rights agenda is never hard. Assange is in a much worse situation than him. If he suffers that much, why is he so healthy and wealthy in China in the first place? easy logic and simple rationality. He definitely knows how to play Whiteness to please the Western audience. He knows very clearly what he's doing and saying and how to make money through "personal tragedies" under the "communist China" in a country with a deeply rooted Red Scare.😂😂😂

Very sad all these Western programs, no matter liberal/left or conservative/right, make China a monster. Demonizing doesn't help with intercultural understanding. Even, Trenor, yourself, needs an urgent trip, a thorough trip to China to see and understand it in person in your own eyes, including Tibet and Xinjiang. People there live a much wealthier, safer, happier, and more content life than most of the black folks here in the US. Taling about his father's imprisonment not talking about the history, like talking about his imprisonment without talking about reasons, is no different from telling lies. President Xi's father and the whole family were sent to exile as well after his father was thrown into prison (political struggle between leftists and rightists). Xi himself lived rural life at the bottom of the society for over a decade.
Ai Weiwei clearly knows what his Western audience wants to hear, and honestly it’s just cringy once you spot what’s happening. I am definitely not the biggest fan of CCP - I left China for a reason; but still, pandering to the whole Western “China bad” story and the “if anyone dares to speak ill of the CCP they’ll disappear forever” fantasy is just kind of pathetic. Sigh, why can’t people just grow TF up and realize that both sides of the “China human rights crisis” argument are tinted with heavy-handed propaganda?

Hmm..I don't read whiteness in this interview. I read the struggle of a person who loves his country very much that they are willing to suffer for generations. How he looks like now doesn't discount the fact he did suffered. So stop.

A disappointing interview. Were my expectations too high? Ai Weiwei seemed to have difficulties expressing his thoughts in English. I think Ai Weiwei should have spoken in Chinese and used a translator. In my opinion, the interview was more about promoting Ai Weiwei (anything anti-China communist government is acceptable by the US media) instead of quality of the interview. I sympathize with Ai Weiwei and followed his struggle for years now. Nevertheless, I don't feel he is offering anything special in order to be promoted by the media. I am sure there are other much more interesting personas to explore.

I think he expressed himself very well. The interview is not for your ENTERTAINMENT. It doesn’t have to be interesting or special.
