Regardless of what your position is on high speed rail and other projects, we really should highlight his breakdown of private sector vs government. A lot of right wing today is clueless about the difference. I watch all sides and when I go to right wing video comments they always say blanket statements like "government is inefficient". Pete did a great job giving examples of the job is to split between the two based on the needs, and not just take a hard stance. The problem today is everyone sees things as black and white when it's not like that. Nobody should say private sector is always bad, or gov is always bad.

@Lor-dn1vzАй бұрын
Sure government is not very efficient but the answer to that is not no government unless you want to live in a country with third world infrastructure and non-existent public health care and social security and no disaster recovery agencies etc etc. Pay your taxes to fund making the place you live in a better place for future generations rather than letting it fall apart because you may die before it falls apart which is what seems to have become our motto since the 80s.

@felixvelariusbosАй бұрын
yes yes yes, and there is NUANCE. In the government, there's very often scenarios where you need to actually spend money to save money...or to be more specific, more upfront cost to set *it* up right (whatever *it* is) so that you're over time saving money. You wanna know why XYZ thing in the government isn't working as well as you think it should? Soo many times it's this. The budget is so tight that the department or team or whatever can't do it right, so is holding it together with a couple strands of duct tape, 30% of somebody's time while they're splitting between 5 other projects, and a heck of a lot of hope that it won't collapse very fast. That's not an efficient way to spend money! AND it doesn't lead to good services. Granted that's not just a government thing; you'll see it in private sector to. JUST SAYING THERE'S NUANCE HERE.

His moment at the end where he didn't last through the 2 minutes of silence got me thinking though. If he doesn't currently meditate or allow himself any downtime of silence to himself, what kind of effect would daily meditation have on him? @BEAST.420GАй бұрын
Which is precisely why he won't ever be a primary candidate (unfortunately). Look what happened to Bernie. The people we need aren't even given a fair chance, instead they are pushed out by corrupt evil such as Trump and Clinton. What we need now are buffoons running the country, to show America what a failure it is. The entire system is flawed. There are no rules, you aren't held accountable for anything. All-round the USA is a huge fuckin joke. Can't wait until the world realizes that America is a 3rd world shitty country, was once a power leader, and yet now a clown show. Things will only change on the day Americans realize they aren't the most important, nor the best, nor the center of the universe. If more Americans would travel the world, and be less patriotic and idiotic, then maybe there's a chance. As an American, I'm staying my ass in Europe with no plans to return. Such a shit country.

Kamala is as good as Pete when she actually gets an opportunity and a space to speak like this - casually and in an exploratory manner. She did a small town hall type conversation with a group of black mothers I think, talking all about her views and work on re-entry programs. It was very similar to this, talking about inputs, outputs, where policies came from, what is possible, why its important.... the problem with politics is that we don't let people just talk like normal people.

Regarding upgrading the rail system in Germany. Our DB (basically german rail) had to basically close down the train station in cologne, which is the MAJOR transportation hub in Northrhine-Westphalia, where train from Munich or others cities in the south go further into the north towards Hamburg etc, while also being a major east west tranportation center, with trains going towards France, Belgium and the Netherlands. It has been chaotic...

That John Adams quote at 16:05 is *everything,* and I'd hope that's a point that resonates, even among radical individualists. Even if you're only in it for yourself and yours... do you really want your children and your children's children growing up in a world where everyone is constantly at each other's throats, fighting over an ever-dwindling scrap heap?
@GSBarlevАй бұрын
The full quote: "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."
@ViktorLoR_Mainu18 күн бұрын
The point of getting capital is that it won't be _my_ kids playing in scrap heaps; they'll have their own cars when they turn 16/18. Why care about everyone else? My empathy only extendsd to myself, my close friends, and my family (young p star wife not included) (nor the kids) (nor close friends)

Pete was by far the best choice in 2020. I'm so sick of the DNC shoving candidates down our throats. Just like in 2016 when they forced Hillary on us over Bernie, if Trump wins, it is partly on the DNC and their lack of ranked choice voting. I know many people on both sides of the political spectrum who love Pete and I hope he runs in 2028 or 20232.

Agreed completely. It was also interesting seeing him react to some of the jokes Hassan was trying to make. I feel like sometimes Hassan was just interrupting, but the jokes weren't necessarily clever, so Pete's reaction was often a really awkward laugh from discomfort instead of a natural laugh.

The biggest problem with public transportation is not connecting the cities, but robust connection within the citices. 99% of U.S. cities is simply not walkable. If even a rail between Dallas to Houston is build today, no one would use it. Because you still need car to get around the city. What are you supposed to do after you get off a train station in Houston today lol.

I still stand by the idea that he hadn't proven himself to be POTUS ready back in 2020. The opportunity he was given at the DoT though has exponentially allowed him to not just put himself in front of the American people in an intelligent and likeable way, but it also lets people see how capable he is at doing his job. I'd argue it probably gave him experiences that honed his craft of being a politician in ways he never would have gotten otherwise. It more than earned him the respect he has today. The German concept of a _Generalsanierung_ (overall refurbishment), shutting down an entire section of rail for several months, is definitely tough for their users: commuters, travelers and cargo. But on the other hand... It would take a decade to fix all the problems the traditional way, cost much more and the positive effects are gained much earlier. Let's say the rail line is in a bad overall condition: Tracks, ballast, signaling, catenary, bridges, tunnels. If you fix it one at a time, the service quality doesn't really improve at the beginning. You may have top-notch signaling, but still face delays because of bad tracks or broken switches for years to come.
