According to my notes, Vettel owed this race to a pitch-sensitive Adrian Newey aero package, a good set of Italian Brembos, and talent. Bourdais is on record as saying, "In the dry, the car has huge flick oversteer in fast and medium-speed corners. In the wet it’s a totally different car - really fun to drive." And pretty much everyone else had Carbon Industrie brakes that had great stopping power when dry but couldn't cope with getting sprayed. The Brembos were a bit softer and more forgiving in the conditions. The rest was up to Seb.

It still cracks me up that Torro Rosso won a race before Red Bull, I remember that when I heard that Seb was going to Red Bull for 2009, I thought it was a mistake, stay with the winning team, dude.

I see you had a similar experience of predicting how well the move was gonna go. Prior to the season: "This'll never work, he's gonna regret it" After the season: "Well, damn" I'd like to point out this was the first time I made that mistake. You'd think I'd learn with Hamilton's move from Mclaren to Merc but then 2014 comes around and yeah...this is why I don't bet real money.

I think Seb was a guy who peaked really young . I think as well as the loss of the blown diffuser the strain of pushing for four staight titles and having kids took it's toll on him and he never rediscovered his early career form.

I honestly think that leaving RB was his biggest mistake. Yes, Danny Ric was doing exceedingly well, and the Renault engine was unreliable and getting slower, but he thrived in the atmosphere of the team. I understood him going to Ferrari because of Schumacher, but with the gift of 20:20 hindsight, it was the biggest mistake of his career. Sad, really.
@CyanRooper

He could've gone to Mercedes Benz and driven alongside Hamilton but he chose to try and emulate his hero Michael Schumacher instead. Sadly that never happened and I wish he could've won at least one title with Ferrari but it seems Ferrari will never go back to that level of dominance from the early 2000s. He even told Leclerc to "not waste his potential" which makes me believe that Vettel has truly given up on Ferrari and I think he might have even told the same thing to Mick which might be why Mick is no longer a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Just like the majority of F1 fans, I had always been a fan of Minardi. Toro Rosso were still Minardi in my heart - and I know I was anything other than alone thinking that. So when this young talent won that race, I - and I am positive I was not the only one - jumped up and screamed with delight. I think they heard us in Italy 🤣

I watched this race from a hotel in Bulgaria whilst on holiday. The commentary was in German. As a fan of the fledgling superstar and with premium beer at 50p a pint, I got a bit lost in the moment and ended up spraying beer off the balcony while singing the Italian & German anthem (with prewar lyrics) to a baffled and perhaps terrified packed swimming pool. I've never been back.

That was my 33rd birthday. That was the year I got a rather unusual birthday present: an older sister! Long story short, my mother gave a child up for adoption when she lived in New York in the 1960s. That child went looking for her birth mother as a grown up in 2008. It was around the time of that grand prix that I first got in touch with her. There's another happy memory I have from that grand prix.

My man Seb! Raise that finger for the first time! I was so delighted, and it was not only a rain induced underdog story, it was a great way to distract from the manufactured controversy over Belgium and good old 'British bias', with LewLew nowhere, and unfortunately for The Plaintiff Felipe Massa, another spin happy wet weekend. Vettel had been getting better and better, and I was backing him after the disaster followed by redemption story of Japan and China the previous year. This sealed it. Michael was gone, now it was my turn to support a German, which to the relief of the rest of the house brought an end to me going all "Don't mention the war!" around anything German. While everyone else was getting soaked horseriding, I was glued to the race hoping for that 'remember this is Minardi!' story to come true after the WTF of Q3 with the 2 Sebs. This was the race that truly codified the 'give the place back rule', as everyone in the wake of Spa (quelle surprise, I agreed with that penalty, as did The Plaintiff) dutifully backed off out of Rettifilo if they went off, and stayed behind through Curva Grande to make absolutely certain they did not get pinged. See, it's not difficult, guys! Don't give me that Get Out of Jail Free business, George, just back off and shut up. That chicane may well need to change, but that's another matter. It was amusing to think "Here we go again!" with the anthem combination, but never would have thought Vettel would wear the red some day. He seemed like he was Red Bull for life at that point. It was such an unusual weekend, not least because I'd never seen rain at Monza before. My golden era truly began here.

Canada and Italy were both feel-good factors that year. For Kubica, it was a false dawn, BMW lost the plot and then the rally accident just when he was getting his career back on track. For Vettel, the start of greatness. He might have made himself unpopular circa 2013, but he won us back, and then some, by the end.

I still wonder how that race would have ended, had Toro Rosso gotten Bourdais' engine started when they were supposed to. Vettel was clearly the better qualifyer of the two. But like in most races that season, Bourdais had the better race pace. By the time they finally got his engine running and sent him out the pits, he was already 1 lap and 50 seconds behind Vettel. At the finish line he was 1 lap and 30 seconds back. He somehow made up 20 seconds over that race distance, despite spending more than half of the race stuck behind slower cars. Sure, Vettel was taking no risks at the front of the field. He probably could have gone faster had he needed to. But still, it would be interesting to know where Bourdais had ended up had he started from the second row where he qualified.

After Torro Rosso's Monza win, it was reported that in the run up to the race Gerhard Berger had gone to Maranello and used his old Ferrari connections to get Torro Rosso (he was co-owner) some of the 'good engines' for that race - the more powerful engines Ferrari kept for themselves. Torro Rosso having identified Monza in advance as a track which would suit their car. (That raised a bit of a question - there was an engine freeze introduced for 2008 and the engines from each supplier were supposed to be the same spec for everyone.)

Wasn't the 2008 Toro Rosso designed by a company created by Red Bull that also created the senior Red Bull entry and not a rebadged Minardi? RB's plan was for Torro Rosso to use the same chassis/car as Red Bull Racing. (Just as Super Aguri planned to use a Honda chassis.) But this was against the rules. They tried to claim it was legal by saying that Torro Rosso owned the intellecual property to the car's design. Also the structure of Red Bull was that Red Bull Technology designed & supplied the car, not Red Bull Racing. (Red Bull Technology supplied both teams.) The rules were tighened up in advance of the new teams joining for 2010. Iirc Alpha Tauri still have a design office in the UK iirc, 'adjacent to' Red Bull's facilities. But they did return to constucting the chassis themselves at the Faenza factory.

You focus too much on the race itself. But Vettel was the fastest man in qualifying - purely on merit and driving ability. Yes, the car worked but there were drivers in much better and fasters cars. Vettel did something similar in Monza a couple of years later - he won the fastest race in the slowest car. Red Bull was one of the, if not THE, slowest car in straight line speed, yet Vettel was faster on hard tires than anyone else on soft ones. Including his teammate in the identical car. Again, that's the driver, not the car who won the race.
