Considering the equipment he had, and how often it fell apart, Pedro didn't do so badly, all things considered. He was average at best, but might have eeked out some more performance had he started a little earlier. It'd be like a 40 year old trying to learn how to be a concert pianist.
I guess this is another case of stats not telling the whole story, but I'll leave that to you to decide...
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

I was in the Pedro Fan Club. My Membership number was 66.. (in the world) My boss told me : If you want to get invites to test sessions , join the fan club of some no hoper because you're not going to get anything from the Schumacher Supporters Club." He was right. I got to meat Pedro every year. I got invited by Arrows twice and once by Sauber to tyre tests at Silverstone. We used to hold our AGM in the broom cupboard of Towscter Leisure Center every year a few days before the British GP. I remember one year Pedro was told he had to leave our AGM because he had some sponsorship do. "Tell them what you like" said Pedro to his manager. "I'd rather spend the time with my fans who have paid money to be in my fan club." The manger went ape shit but Pedro stayed and had a beer with his fans. He was a decent driver and an all round good guy who appreciated his fans.

Diniz is a funny story. He got better with time during his F1 career. He was quite good in Monaco and fast tracks and even got a P1 in a practice session in Austria in 1997. He is for sure top 3 of the pay drivers of that era. And I remember when his father was kidnapped. It was huge news here in Brazil with breaking news 24/7 on TV. Another great episode, Aidan!

I have high respect for Diniz' driving skills. Yes, he carried the "pay driver" stigma, but look at what he achieved and how he improved, and his driving skills outshine the driving skills from many couch heroes by far.

I started watching F1 in 1998 and remember Pedro Diniz. Definitely a journeyman, but he wasn't actually half bad. For a 90s paydriver, he was actually quite solid.

By the standards of the era he might even be the best of the pay drivers because atleast you didn't feel like there was a massive chasm between him and the rest of the drivers on the grid as was common with pay drivers at the time.

@@dodolurker yeah exactly and especially in the context of an era where pay drivers were necessary for the back of pack teams this is especially notable you'd much rather have a diniz in the second seat than someone like rosset to give an example from the same period atleast diniz was capable of being competitive with even a world champion level first driver like Damon Hill on a good weekend. Meanwhile rosset was so bad the engineers out of anger at his incompetence changed his name on the board to tosser, to show the contrast 😂😂

@@bravalloy tbf both data sets broadly show the same thing which is that although a pay driver diniz by no means was entirely unworthy of being on the grid unlike a lot of pay drivers at the time and got better as his career went on. Like he wasn't a number 1 driver by any means but for a back half of grid team he was a decent number 2 who wouldn't waste your second seat and could on his day get in the points while also bringing in money as a pay driver. The fact he beat both hill and alesi in some qualifying sessions and even out scored alesi shows this pretty clearly.

@ True. But by no means I wanted to confront you. I mentioned other day how today's points system is unfair with old drivers. For example: Larini had 1x10 in 88, 7x10 in 90, 1x10 on 91 before a 2nd place for Ferrari in 94 and 1 point in 95 for a total of 7 points. In today's point system: 51 points (if I am not mistaken).

A perfectly serviceable pay driver. He was inferior to his teammates but never looked like he didn't belong, and scored his points in a time only the top 6 finishes were awarded points. Today there are drivers in the midfield that make their careers out of 7th places and lower point finishes.

Wish this video was longer, Pedro Diniz is one of the classic/cult drivers I know and like to read about. Like more about his driving style and what races was the best from him and other noteworthy events in F1 he was involved in. But its a great video none the less, good work! Not sure if its true or not but I remember reading one of the reasons he got sacked from Prost team was that he tried to get into a leading position within the team if not alright buying the team, which alain prost didnt like and they fell apart. Diniz with his money could easily do that to be fair. And that brings me to: Pedro diniz is according to several sites one of the richest people to ever drive in F1, and he was that eras Lance stroll. But which of those two drivers were the best? I vote on Diniz. But they are similair, both are super rich and uses money to get to better teams, but I think Stroll is richer but not sure.

I met Pedro at an event before the Australian GP when he was driving for Ligier (along with Olivier Panis, who I reckon is quite underrated). Didn't know much about him at the time but came across as a pretty decent bloke. Then saw an interview with him recently where he was talking about his organic farming business, and still came across as a smart and thoughtful fellow. So respect to him. As a driver, while he wasn't brilliant he was far from terrible and showed a lot of promise at times. I suspect with a decent car he could have had pretty good results.

Pedro Paulo Diniz's father was named Abilio Diniz, his kidnapping became famous back then in 1989, where it was around the time of the first elections for president since 1960, because apparently some of the kidnappers when was presented by the police was using a t-shirt of one of the political parties running for president. Abilio Diniz after some time sold part of his supermarket chain to a french group and then got into a war where he was expelled from his own company. Also his other son João Paulo, Pedro's brother, had a helicopter accident once, where his girlfriend died. Steve Robertson did Indy Lights after that.

That's one of the real questions. Should anyone, be it a driver or a team, be allowed to have a go, or should there be a gatekeeper system? I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole. Jacques Villeneuve once said it took him half a year to just not crash the ruddy thing and finish a race in one piece, when he complained about Max having it easy. He's got a point, of sorts. By that measure, I think Diniz did alright every time he didn't crash. But. There are (ex) F1 drivers who were competitive, got landed without a contract, went to touring cars and got nowhere. There's Loeb, arguably the best there ever was but he never got the F1 license because he only did rally. Who's to say what is the ultimate test of capability? F1 gets the airtime, but is it really the ultimate or is it just tv friendly enough? I love the WEC but I never watch it. Too long winded for me to stay awake, but I do acknowledge it as the ultimate test. Rally takes on all and any circumstances. GrN tests cars you can actually buy. F1, next to that, only races in ideal circumstances over fairly short hauls. But it does take things to Mars and beyond. Which is the toughest? I'd say Dakar, but that is now a well catered for 5 star hotel trip. The original Thiery Sabine Paris Dakar, gps didn't exist, yeah. But snowflake culture will never again allow that. Fluffy pillow security is all. You really wanna be a hero? Tough. You're not allowed. You can't be a pioneer settler, you have to conform to the Man. The IRS at least will have its due, and you can't pay enough taxes if you don't live as long as you might do. Live longer, pay more!

Diniz is one of those "What If..." stories. He always seemed to be in the wrong car at the wrong time, as well as getting into F1 2-3 years too late. Those 2 years with Sauber were some of the worst Sauber has had in terms of reliability and pace (C18 specifically), before that was Ligier in their death throes and an underfunded Arrows with the worst reliability. If he had stayed in F1, his money might have really helped Jordan - 2001's EJ11 was a quick qualifying car but lacked race pace with Trulli - Diniz might've been a more mature pair of hands for a race and would definitely have been faster than Zonta, their test and reserve driver. Trulli could be very quick over a lap, but his race pace was always off for his whole career. Diniz was also only 30 when he left F1, so he still had some years left in my opinion.

I did not undrrstand the "Rob" comment, because although de did not do good in F1, Roberto Moreno was a very good driver, F.3000 champion ina team of 3 or 4 people and no money, and that incredible qualification for the Monaco GP with one the worst F.1 ae ever

I think when people use the term "pay driver" it is only against pay drivers who do not really deserve their seats, and ignore the fact that some really good drivers are also pay drivers. It's become an insult term, that could be aimed at actual decent to great drivers if you fully apply it. We all know Perez is essentially a pay driver. but people forget that. Lauda is probably the most well known and successful pay driver. Diniz was never brilliant, but he was nowhere near as bad as some of the people who made it into F1 who really did not deserve to be there. The new insult to F1 drivers though is going to be nepo driver 🤣

The whole love/hate relationship F1 fans have historically had with pay drivers vs talent is something I’ve always found interesting. There’s always been some tolerance of pay drivers as they have helped keep struggling teams afloat, so long as they’re at least talented enough not to make a complete tit of themselves and the team. Compare Diniz with someone like Ricardo Rosset (widely regarded as one of the worst F1 drivers of the 90s and one of the worst pay drivers ever) and he looks like bloody Schumacher. However, Rosset actually had a bit of success in junior formulas and on paper pre-F1 looked like a much better driver than Diniz. Yet, he just never took to F1 for whatever reason. Diniz seemed to manage the F1 environment way better and just goes to show how (for pay drivers at least) money + being consistently average is the key to holding down a drive for a number of seasons above all else.
