Like he mentioned, it's legal in California, but where I live (Oregon) it's not legal. From Oregon Dept. of Transportation's website: "Be sure to follow the pavement markings and stay in your lane when executing turns onto roadways with more lanes than the lane you are turning from. ... The general rule for turning is to turn from the nearest lane in the direction you are traveling to the nearest lane in the direction you want to go. Avoid swinging wide or changing lanes while turning." Of course if there are no other cars around, it's safe to "ignore" this law & turn into whatever lane you want, but I'd be worried about drivers who are used to making this maneuver and then do it while distracted & I'm in their blind spot.

This looks amazing -- I'm personally not super picky about whether it's slightly more or less aggressive, instead preferring improvements to awkwardness and unpredictability. My two biggest complaints are still turn signals and that it gets _more_ jittery (including with the accel pedal) in uncertainty, not less. I don't know if it's improving because the uncertainty handling is getting better, or if there are just less situations where it's uncertain, but I'm glad to see it. I wish there was some sort of clamp on how hard it's allowed to jerk the wheel the moment after the path planner makes a drastic jump, because those are the scary situations where it's suddenly decided to cut across lanes in an intersection or something. A jumpy path planner should be dampening the steering wheel and lowering the speed until it figures out what's actually safe/correct to do next. I'd also love a chime specific to uncertainty, like we get with construction, like "hey, I'm probably about to mess up". Which brings me to my biggest fear, that it doesn't actually know it's uncertain in those moments. 😅 Anyways, great videos!
@malax4013 Жыл бұрын
Those are good points but in some situations hard jerk might save you from accident so you really can't limit the jerk. Planner just has to get better.
@minimaddu Жыл бұрын
@@malax4013 I get that, in theory, but it isn’t good enough to be preventing accidents like that yet. That can’t be the reason it has a loose leash until the majority of jerk is really preventing disaster. Today it’s just the system freaking out 99% of the time, which trains the drivers to immediately override this behavior, potentially catastrophically in the rare instance it was correct. This is why I’d rather have uncertainty communicated and a “heightened risk” alert that I can react to as a driver by watching surroundings more closely, rather than being alerted via a new, unnecessary problem (the car veering itself into the wrong direction or brake checking the person behind me)
@minimaddu Жыл бұрын
At least that would be my preference. The way it behaves in uncertainty now freaks me, my passengers, and nearby vehicles out. It’s the main reason I rarely turn it on when anyone else is in the car.
@malax4013 Жыл бұрын
@@minimaddu Maybe it could be done the way that the system determines the seriousness of the situation and the limits the jerk if there is no real chance for accident. But this also might reduce the data of situtation that Tesla team really needs. I agree with your statements but I believe FSD-team has a roadmap for fixing these things. They still have lots of big architectural changes to make and those will probably fix these issues. After the major part of the software is upgraded to neural networks they can start focus on more direct problems. I think that will be at the end of second half of 2023 or first half of 2024.

The new Audio is DEFINITELY noticeable. I had my headphones in, watching this in a parking lot and it caught me off guard thinking it was actual cars and/or people multiple times.

Love the fade at the end. Great drive, definitely shows the progress being made.

What a great video. Subscribed. FSD and your voice kind of align in rhythm, smooth but decisive. Video quality is great, and so is audio. Keep it up!

17:00 Amused by the astute observation that being a pedestrian you're-statistically, at least-much safer with FSD than with a human drive.

Can you share more info on those statistics that show that a pedestrian is safer with FSD than a human driver? I was trying to find that but was not able to.

I wanted to write about adding a summary for all interventions and disengagements, but you've tought of that already. Happy to see your great videos getting even better with each upload!

It's also fun to see the beautiful city too! I live in Oklahoma and every road is "go straight, turn 90 degrees, go straight". It looks really hard to drive in San Francisco....

I have driven, as a resident, in 10 states and 26 cities (8 in California). I can tell you FOR SURE not only are the laws different, but the "accepted/acknowledged rules of the road" depend on the area more than the law for sure. Looks like it's adapting to that, which is dope!

7:40 I liked the way it went over multiple lanes. Here in Finland, the traffic rules specifically allow this kind of move *if* the lane changes to do it otherwise would be very fast because in that case, going directly to the intented line reduces risk of accident. However, the rules also say that the driver doing this manouver must yield to all traffic so you have to be careful with that action.

Awesome commentary and picking the most 'troublesome' venues to test real life situations. I'm looking forward to my 14.1 release, hopefully soon. I just drove back from Lake Tahoe to Los Gatos, CA using FSD 13.6.8 about 97% of the driving time with only a handful of interventions, non critical!

It looks like the rollout of 11.4.1 has about stopped, with only about 5% of eligible cars getting it. You'll probably have to wait for 11.4.2.

I personally wish tesla wouldn’t have to account for differences in traffic laws. As a software engineer I can tell you that dealing with different laws in different regions is a nightmare. The easiest way to do it is if the law exists somewhere just do it everywhere

I agree with all of your comments. I think you have a great understanding of what is appropriate driving. You're doing great! I wish the die hard rule followers would take a chill pill. If fsd followed all the rules, it would cause more accidents and frustration on the road. Doing what other people expect you to do is more important for safety. I think fsd couldn't have done better in a lot of these situations. It's really amazing how far it has come.

Amazed how well it works in SF. In Virginia on 11.3.6 I still can't get to the gym and there is only 1 left hand turn. FYI, in VA you can cross white lines and even change lanes in an intersection.

Funny the people who are honking are the bad drivers. Tesla's doing what it should. After 15 years and a couple million miles driving a semi truck I realize you're going to get there. Speeding may take a few minutes off your trip but it actually doesn't add up to be that much time.

WA Driver's guide: Turn from the lane that is closest to the direction you want to go and turn into the lane closest to the one you came from. When making turns, go from one lane to the other as directly as possible without crossing lane lines or interfering with traffic. Once you have completed your turn, you can change to another lane if you need to.

Slow-rolling rather than stopping is vital to busy crowds. Crowds can easily handle one more object moving slowly, but if you stop expecting them to take turns the way a car does, you will be stuck forever.

I really enjoyed watching that (2 part) video 😊 Here are some of my thoughts: - If you add a summary, it would be nice to break the disengagements etc. down to driving time and/or driven km (miles if you must 😉 ) e.g.: 1.7 disengagements/hour or so. That would help to compare the different autopilot versions. - I think you do a great job of estimating the risk of a driving situation and giving the AI enough room but disengage if necessary - appreciate all the awkwardness you have to go to at times! ;) - As a (sadly) not tesla driver it took me some time to figure out what the white messeges showing the AI intentions are - Your visualisation with all the details you put in is incredible and hepls unterstanding whats going on. Also your very well timed narrative explaining a situation is super interesting and gives insight of what's going on! Looking forward to thr next video, thanks 😊

It’s so hard to ever get a good read on FSD as the team being based in California, it usually performs well here, but the moment you get outside of California, it’s like a completely different vehicle.

13:20 I think the high contrast of the tree shadow causes the camera vision system to guess that the road surface is so bad that it shouldn't go straight forward.

I really appreciate this video. There are too few FSD videos showing such complexity and giving the insight / detail re the FSD decision making, good and bad points, improvement, etc. In comparison there are far too many videos showing only simple scenarios, normal roads, low traffic, and claiming FSD is good to great. Like we KNOW FSD is pretty darn good on divided highways already, for example. Your videos help me understand that the progress is real and effective in even complex areas, with enough training. The real challenge will be getting the full suite of needed skills AND enough consistency for a wide-area robo-taxi capable L4 network.

I'm an Uber driver in a college town, and there are many spots in town that I thought that FSD would not be able to handle for many years, but these last two videos have me thinking it might be there soon. To be clear, I still don't think the system would correctly handle some of the extreme intersections in town at this point. I would love for someone with FSD Beta to come to town and put it through what I think would be the hardest torture test in the US!

19:50 You're looking at it the wrong way, it has the right turn signal on because it's thinking that it's doing a right turn on red.
