@@johnroscoe2406 Actually, there were combat jumps in both Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury) in 1983 and in Panama (Operation Just Cause) in December 1989. I believe both operations had jumps at minimum height (500ft), (at least by the Rangers, maybe not the 82nd, I dunno) which meant they left their reserve chutes at home (either the main opens fine, or you splat!!). I have heard some crazy stories of the Delta raid on Carcel Modelo prison in Panama, to free American Kurt Muse.

I joined the RAF Air Training Corp aged about 13 back in 1967 because I wanted to be a paratrooper. Living in Berkshire, if you put your ATC uniform on, walked down to the main road, put your thumb out would soon get a lift, especially to RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson. Once there, you could go to one of the Squadrons and get a flight to somewhere. I did it often and flew in quite a few RAF transport planes and on one flight, which was an Argosy, during the flight the back door was dropped and I was sat (strapped in) quite close to it. I literally peed my pants, as I was absolutely petrified at the noise, the wind, the coldness of the air and even though not being to see vertically down what I could see was mind-blowing. Suffice to say, after that experience I realize I could never be a paratrooper and since that time, I have had such respect for anyone who choose to jump out of a plane with just a parachute to save their life. But four years later I did join the RAF but as an Aerial Photographic Operator where I spent most of my time, underground in highly secure intelligence centers processing and printing B&W photographs to be made into large maps of places in Russia.

Met a friend's uncle who kept a museum of sorts at his suburban Chicago.home in an oversized outbuilding on his property. All of the stuff he had was from his service in WW2. Turns out he made 2 combat drops with the 82nd, Normandy and Market Garden. Finished the war without a scratch, after fighting the rest of the way into Germany. Wonderful, gripping, exciting stories he shared with me. He held regular tours for youth groups and other civic organizations and attended reunions all the time. He told me that sharing with people what he went through allowed him to process the hideous sights he beheld. I'll never forget him.

They do,...you spend a day practicing your exit from an airplane on a mockup on the ground, then spend a day practicing your landing by jumping off a platform and swinging thru the air untill they randomly dump you to the ground, then the jump towers where they pull you into the air and release you.....nothing really ever prepares you for when that door opens and you look down though.

I remember reading an account of an American paratrooper during the WWII invasion of Europe. The heroes were jumping in darkness, heavily loaded down with combat gear, determined to bring the war to a successful conclusion. They knew that some of them would be killed. The author said to himself as he was standing up, "If I get through this alive, I will never be afraid of anything else my entire life." And he made it all the way through the war! God bless those men.
@bizzyslivovitz730616 күн бұрын
Yes, and also the reminiscences by Dick Winters and Bill Guarnere make you realize that if they didn't organize a reunion once a year, we wouldn't have had "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers." Stephen Ambrose wrote "Band of Brothers" because he heard Easy Company had a reunion once a year. (He attended the reunion.) But the best story of World War II is still Captain Richard Best! If you had a little boy who wrote a story and said, "Mom, I want to read you my story!," and she said, "Yes, I liked Star Wars, too," but that really happened. One pilot, one dive, one bomb, and he took out the flagship of the enemy fleet, and then never flew again. Not because he was a kamikaze, but because he inhaled gases from the explosions. He did live a long time. I just looked it up, and his dates are 1910-2001.

I've seen old footage of when militaries began using paratroopers and we've come a long way. Having paratroopers sitting on the wing of the plane in the most unsafe manner and more or less falling off. You can see the precision that it takes to deploy a c-17's worth of paratroopers. I'm glad that they're on our side...thank you all...

The pay load each one carries is huge now, as well as the size and shape of the canopy is better today. What has NOT changed is the courage and heart to do this time after time for the little money you get added. We all did it because we loved being different and the best. PLUS, I hoped it would help to pick up girls.....which it didn't. No girls ever around. Never ever saw a girl in jump school or for the next couple of years really.

I went thru jump school in 1971 and the aircrafts I jumped from once I was assigned the 82nd airborne were the C-130, C-141 and the C-7 Caribou. On the C-7 Caribou you had to jump off the rear ramp as the two side doors were to small. The room the new C-17 provided to paratroopers today I could only dream of back in the 1970 and 1980. I can't image the extra work that is required of the Jumpmasters on one of these jumps. I received my Master Wings in 1980 and for the next four years I don't think I was ever a jumpmaster on a C-141, lucky me.

@@dennied7826 if you're falling in a hostile environment, you want to descend as fast as possible. That's why recreational falling is softer.

Dennie D The parachutes are designed to descend much faster than civilian parachutes that’s why.

they had runways at home and at the school? I guess the private jet took off, the kids jumped out, then it landed to take them home and make them jump out before it landed. Hell of a trick.

Ditto for my parents ! Only difference was they couldn't afford parachutes but luckily they were tough ! And resilient ! And bounced well.

Every soldier fights for its own country. When they done they are treated like trash. Heroism is something of the past. Specially those who never joint the army are big mouthed.
