I saw these once on the tank trails at Graf, during the Graf '82 range upgrade. As a 12 Bravo, I was driving my 5ton thru a dust cloud, coming back from the demo dump, loaded with thousands of pounds of explosives, and these things came down the tank trail in a bigger dust cloud, they looked like something from Mars, as they just appeared out of the dust cloud, as I rounded a bend. Had to swerve outta the way, luckily, no issues got back safely. We went to the demo range in Hoenfels later on and blew up a bunch bangalores(lot dates of 1945), 40lb shape charges and some rocket thing pointed into the ground to make "BIG Holes"....those were the days!! Very cool machine!

if you needed to cross the many deep and narrow waterways of Europe, under fire, you wouldn't feel that way. When these were made, the M60 was still in service. I was part of research and production team at Rock Island arsenal where the bridge launcher attachment mechanism was made and welded to the tank. An interesting process. If you needed it in Europe, there was just no way you could cross all these streams with tracks, or wheels, without a solid bridge of some sort. This was the way it was done. And a great idea for the time. You could proceed to the front, deploy the bridge, cross it and wait for all other vehicles came across, then pick it up and go on to the next stream. Believe you me, the other mobile units were sure glad to see you coming. You were their life saver. Don't know why you call it a waste. What other solution do you have to cross a stream, under armor protection, during combat???

1974 when i was at rock island and went down in the shops to see this being made, they had a big twin ring assembly like large barrel hoops. Drive the chassis in them and chain it down real good. That way you could weld the mount on the forward up slope of the glaxis plate from an easy position, then one man could roll the tank over like you would a barrel with an over head crane so that the lower was now the upper and easy to get to for the welder to do a good job. Id have not believed you could roll a tank chassis over soooo easily if id not seen it myself,,,,,best wishes guys,,,

They are made of Maragin steel. Very high strength and very little distortion from huge loads. Was lucky enough to work on few of these with a non destructive weld tester as an apprentice welder. Amazing bit of kit.

water usually flows in low places,,,,,crossings where needed are rarely with cliffs on both sides....all you need is reasonably close banks so the bridge can reach across and a bank on each side 40' or so extended from the waters edge so the vehicle can make an approach,,,they dont have to be level or equal in height

I operated this type as well as the CEV but this bridge lays out wonderful and fats....... whoever is in the video would receive themselves a NO-Go on the lay out of it.

I can remember being told, just keep the other end a one or two feet off the ground with a constant speed as you go out or back. New drivers would always get a jerky motion like this one. He had to just be using one control at a time instead of the 3. In place of the bridges we mounted two MICLICs. for clearing minefields many times for training, but always one would always be set up for one part of the task force training (used once, then turned into an automotive pit for working on damaged vehicles for the rest of the exercise.) Now the CEV's were fun, but as a 12B the 12F would not let me play too much with it. (maybe in February in Holenfelds after throwing two tracks while at the bottom of a hole that they dug with a few feet of water covering to the tow points.)

Brett J I miss the military life. I had 4 different MOS's: 62B which was a combat engineer mechanic, 63B which was wheeled vehicle mechanic, 12F which was combat engineer equipment operator and then my last reclass was to an actual 12B, combat engineer. Seems I spent a lot of time in schools. But then after 12 years of service I got hurt on a civilian job and after 13 surgeries it screwed up my entire military career and life.

@@blacksuite1 As far as when he lifted the bridge into the vertical position yes, it weighs 11 tons. But when he was laying the bridge out he was either having trouble with the controls or simply didn't know what he was doing. When I was stationed in West Germany, we had competitions deploying our bridges and picking them back up. I've never seen someone do it as slowly as the guy in the video before.

Did you win Bridge EX? I was with 10th Eng in Kitzigen 85-87. I got to play with all the vehicles. I licensed operators with the motor officer. When we'd do the testing I'd get to drive for fun. The only one I could talk him into licensing me on was the M88 recovery tank, since I was in the motor pool. Good times.

@@justken1900 Unfortunately no I didn't. I never had the opportunity to compete, our competitions were just within our battalion. I was with 12th Eng. in Dexheim 85-88. I really miss it now but I couldn't physically do it now if I had the chance too.

If it were cut off completely, we would still be in debt. In fact, welfare and giveaway programs are more than anything else and have increased well above what is realistic. Engineers use them for bridging anti-tank ditches and similar obstacles that vehicles cannot negotiate on their own. An M1 tank may be 60 tons of death dealing, but it can be stopped by what is essentially just a hole in the ground. So when the cav scouts can't find a way around, the engineers must bridge the gap.

Their are hydraulic hoses with quick disconnects that plug into the bridge. Two rams in the stem push the bridge off and disconnect at the same time.

It seems like most streams narrow enough to be crossed that way could just be splashed across.

It is more useful in the case of crossing tank ditches, and other short dry or wet gaps. Imagine a tank battalion is moving cross-country, and they come to a stream with steep banks with a bottom that is 10 or so feet deep and is 9 meters wide. You can't expect tanks and other vehicles to drive through this creek bed. They would become stuck, rollover, or potentially become damaged in another way. This provides them with a way to cross the gap quickly and continue moving.

***** I think Boeing made the bridge. Rock Island Arsenal made the launch mechanism, in house. No production line. One by one. Had a big jig, like the bands on a whiskey barrel that you drove the M60 into. Jigs only, no barrel. M60 was chained down and launcher parts welded to the front glaxis plate. Then M60 was rolled over with a crane so man could weld the bottom of the launcher to the tank with it being in a suitable, and easier position for welding. On completion, tank rolled over again, and drove away. That alone was a sight to see!!! HA!! Some great welders there, who cared about doing a good job.

Tanks can’t cross a 20’ wide, 10’ deep ditch with steep sides. This is faster than calling for a dozer, CEV, or M9 ACE to cut ramps or fill in the ditch.

They accompanied an armor battalion of m60s when I was in the service. On reforger we used them to place over small bridges that couldn't hold the weight of the tanks they were made using the same carriage as an m60 but most i saw were built that way to start with

Markus E Basically it's a mobile bridge launcher. The bridge can clear any river way/trench/mindfields/etc that is within 60 feet. The bridge is deployed, all the other ground troops/gear goes over, then the M60 collects the bridge for the next obstacle.

It is originally meant for anti-tank ditches, which are a simple, cost-effective way to halt the advance of a mechanized or armored task force. The only other way to bridge an anti-tank ditch would be with an earth-mover, and an AVLB is much faster than that. A trained crew can deploy an AVLB in just a couple of minutes.
