I saw a man who was over 300 lbs. And he rolled without a sound. Smoothest thing I ever seen. Most fall and roll like a brick. He rolled like a whisper. Always been my motivation of ground work.

This helped a lot more than some of the other things I'd looked at. I try to practice when I'm not in class, but it's so difficult without somebody there showing you what went wrong. I love this.

very nice explanation in such a controlled and quiet way, that would make a aikido beginner pupil feel safe and in good hands by the instructor

my reverse ukemi is thanks to this gentleman. I watched the video on loop for 15 mins before my jiu-jitsu class. My first attempt was almost perfect and I have never even felt a sting from a reverse ukemi since.

Very good way to explain Ukemi, talking and showing at the same time and in the right specific moments in order to imprint the correct movements. A personal way to approach could be to clean your mind, completely from overthinking, then imagine to be a big wheel. Domo arigato, Sensei Donovan.

And he is also instrukting in such a good way, that you will understand very easy why it is good for your body to do the ukemi in the way he is instructing. And then he seems to be very good himself at what he is doing.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! I finally after 5 months of doing Aikido was able to do a forward roll without any pain in my shoulder arm and actually do it in a straight line! IN MY BEDROOM! I'm soooo stoked! Now I'm gonna show my sensei that I can do it now that I'm 7th Kyu and then maybe he will pick me to throw around. SOOOO EXCITED! I was positioning the hands incorrectly. Thank you so much!. I was sooo frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a great video to open up the eyes of close minded discriminators. You CAN have long hair and do martial arts You CAN do martial arts if you are black You CAN have long hair and be black guy. I know a lot of you will misunderstand my comment, but I am not racist nor I imply anything racist. I am just sick and tired of people who discriminate because of stupid stereotypes.

There no Aikido Yoshinkan in Michigan . Maybe one but far away. I wish more Yoshikan /Yoshinkai Aikido were in Mi I studied under Takashi Kushida in 1987 and in 2012 just before his passing . He was a great man , I will never forget him ! Takashi Kushida once was ahead of 50 schools in the USA. His son teaches Yoshokai Aikido in Ann Arbor. I gave Aikido my heart and trained 150% each time I came to the dojo . He got mad at me and charges at me like he was going to attack me . later at closing time I brought it up to him and he threaten to break my knee if I came back to class. It hurt me to the core because I love Aikido and couldn't go back. It took me many many months to get over not having Aikido in my life. I looked for a school to continue training but none were the same . There is to this story , I didn't feel ( wasn't ) wanted even giving my 150% The history of Aikido is love and harmony but this was harmony .

@threat645 purpose: when you are getting thrown, it's a way to protect yourself. If the technique translate into a hyper extension on your elbow and doing this can prevent it from being snapped, do it.

If there were just two things to make sure one practices and gets comfortable doing, it would be 'situational awareness' and falling. To die because you weren't paying attention or you were afraid to fall would be very very sad. Sensai Donovan san! You are a phenomenal teacher. To break a simple forward roll down for those who know nothing and make it look like it is; simple, no sound, easy peasy like breathing (well, shoot, most people don't know how to breathe correctly)...well, I am impressed!! I wish I could take your classes!! You voice and manner are wonderful. I'm very good with kinesiology and teaching proper movement to those who aren't martial art experts or dance professionals or athletes in sports. Not all athletes know how to move correctly. You can tell by their 'C' posture. It is a rare teacher that can break down the simplest moves for anyone to understand. You are a great teacher. It is also rare to find humans that aren't afraid to fall or breathe correctly much less to move every little muscle necessary to do a movement, excluding all the muscles that have no business operating to execute a movement... without thinking. Your proprioceptors (in your spinal column) are responsible for keeping you moving without breaking an ankle or a wrist or looking dumb in public. If you break a leg, twist an ankle, etc. one needs to retrain their proprioceptors again for the new 'alignment'...(.standing on one foot with eyes closed and then the other foot with eyes closed is the fastest remedy to retrain proprioceptors) but one HAS to practice until the movement and/or the skill is second nature.

Learning to fall in this way isn't just useful in aikido class. I tripped over a curb one day and instinctively went into a roll. I was over and up before I'd even realized I'd done anything. This was a real life situation, outside of a fight, obviously, but as an older person, I saved myself a world of hurt by knowing how to roll properly.
