With my small experience, I can say that aikido doesn't make you a fighter but as judo it make you aware of body placement and how to use your weight and the weight of your opponent to help you. Owen Modeste you're right. No matter what martial arts you learn be it Karate, Tang Soo Do, Kungfu, Boxing, Krav Maga etc..they only teaches responds and movements based on known situations and controlled environment or settings. What differs a fighter and a martial artist is the ability to observe, learn, adapt, improvise and overcome the challenges that comes. There's no other ideal way to achieve that except facing the real situations. Some martial arts like Krav Maga are not known by many but they are as lethal as others because people uses them in real fight for life. Just ask any Israeli soldiers or maybe if you are fortunate enough may request for a training and 'fight' at their army bases. Formality is only for demonstrations and training. The practicality of the mives and responds to any given situations will have to be obtained in real life fights whereby your win will be determined by your ability to adapt and improvise. Good luck.

I am second degree brown belt from the 90's and Aikido is a combination of mixed arts( Karate, self defense and Judo). When used correctly should be sufficient. But with a seasoned fighter, you can recover from loosing with a given opportunity.

All the things you showed is exactly why Aikido succeeds in the street fight. The problem with people who take Aikido is they try to apply a straight kata, to a street fight, no straight taught approach with ANY martial art works with a textbook kata. One has to interpret and apply the lessons in a kata in a practical way! I stress that to my students (first dan here). Aikido is a fantastic practical martial art but a lot of people seem to have a problem implementing the techniques in a practical way. It's about redirection, and joint manipulation in a direct way when faced with a direct threat. True Aikido way is to inflict the least amount of harm necessary to subdue or disable your opponent but in the end, the choice of needed force is up to you. My Aikido training has saved me numerous times, whether it was just diffusing the situation or having to handle an angry violent opponent. I have also studied Tai Chi, Chin Na and Shotokan Karate, but it was Aikido that made the most sense in a life and death situation.

Like all martial arts it will just tell you how to fight & defence will style, technique & there are rules of engagement. All those things won't apply to a street fight. It's not about how much you learn but how you apply them.

Technique; fight-style and "rules" aren't relevant to the practice of aikido (ok, "rules" are, in relation to etiquette). Aikido is a "master" art: meaning you can apply it to many disciplines. Fighting is only one narrow application. And point of fact there are at least seven diverse "styles" of aikido: but they are interchangeable in practice. I can go from a yoshinkan dojo to study at a Ki Society dojo in the same day, with no issues.

The "effective, simple strike" he did there is the very first technique in the 17 basic technique of Aikido. It's the first one of Atemiwaza. Also, once you get to a certain level of Aikido, the form does not matter. What matters is the principles behind it. Breaking balance, get out of the way, attack your opponent's physical weak point, etc. If you just desperately trying to perform a technique on the street without any adaptation to the situation, of course you will get hit. And that's not what Aikido promotes. DON'T BLAME AIKIDO; BLAME YOURSELF FOR NOT LEARNING THE CORE OF AIKIDO.

I studied AIKIDO privately in College. The one useful thing for me is it taught me how to fall. Decades later, one winter day I'm out walking to the garage after an ice storm and hit a slippery spot and went flying through the air in a fall that could have seriously injured or killed me. But the old training, I had thought long since forgotten kicked in and in the 1 second or so that I was airborne, I twisted to the right, got my right arm out and slapped the ground as I came down and hit. To my amazement, nothing hurt, nothing broken, not even an ache. I got up, brushed myself off, marveled at how such a simple trick could work and went about my business.

Chest puffed out, shouting louder to seem more intimidating, walk closer to get in your face, throw a tester punch to see what you do, throw more if you fight back. They all come telegraphed. The best thing you can do, and the reason I stopped losing fights, is to understand and be aware of your surroundings, keep a minimum distance from your aggressor and strike first whilst closing the distance. Don't let a meathead use his shit tactics when even the smallest amount of martial arts and awareness will win you most of your fights against morons.

Yeah it's always great to try your best to avoid a fight but eventually you'll get into one and knowing what to do is essential
@Alyanorno107854 жыл бұрын
Yeah but avoiding a fight isn’t just running away. It could be making sure you always have multiple escape plans, being aware of when you might be in danger (your body has built-in tools for this) and remembering that no matter what your chosen discipline/weapons/experience may be: if you round a corner and there’s a group of people waiting to jump you, it won’t matter how good your hand-to-hand skills are. A gun wouldn’t even get your out unscathed if there’s more than a couple attackers. Good cardio and knowing how to vault would probably help you there. Being able to win a ground fight %99 of the time is only so useful if, when you take your assailant down and start incapacitating him, his buddy starts carving out your kidneys or slicing up your tendons. It’s too easy to lose a fight before it starts. Using your best judgement to reduce your disadvantage in potentially dangerous situations is fighting with your mind before having to resort to risking your body. That’s how i interpret that quote.
@mr_d3adw8734 жыл бұрын
@@Alyanorno10785 you're very right, both skills are useful. And I'll never downplay the importance of situational awareness. Being able to think ahead and know when a fight is going to end up with you in a body bag or in the ICU and having a good way out is very important. But the way most people interpret that quote is that you should always JUST try to get away or talk it down, but the sad truth is eventually you're going to be cornered or there's gonna be someone you have to protect and running isn't going to help. It isn't even going to be an option. So knowing what to do in any situation is important. Whether it's being ready to outrun a group of five guys or protecting your best friend from her abusive boyfriend, both skills are a great thing to have.

They tend to have evolved past the "works in the street" mentality and have moved on to love of the art and it's discipline for the sake of the art and the discipline. People searching for the ultimate martial art dont seem to be capable of understanding that there isnt one. Everything is a compromise or an adaptation to a style's compromise. In the "real world" situations these goes go on and on about, all it takes is 7 or 8 well executed and practiced basic techniques to be able to beat 99% of the bar brawlers out there. Every organized martial art that isn't specifically trained as a method of assault will fail in an IRL situation, because most the practitioners unconciously hold back, or are expecting specific responses to their movements. They don't have the mindset needed for the follow through. I've been in a few fights, and had to bail a friend out of one, where he thought his martial arts (competition judo) made him better than some drunk dude on the street in a fight. He had no idea how to respond upon the other guy not letting himself be thrown. He also got himself a good thumping from me afterward when he told me he 'didn't want to hurt the guy'. If you get in a real fight, your priority better be removing the threat as quickly as possible, even if that means breaking things. None of the modern taught martial arts, at least in the western world are truly taught as a martial art anymore, and as a result aren't really viable as a self defense method, because there are holes in either the technique taught, or in the mindset taught.

I have always experienced aikido as an elaborate dance when training. Of course aikido can fail when in a street situation. It's about using their energy to be able to subdue them.

I'll be honest, got nothing against people practicing aikido at all. To each their own. But when it comes to self defence, I really think that muay thai, boxing or bjj is a much better option, it's tried and tested with plenty of examples of it being used effectively for real. But i've barely found any real examples using aikido. Just my thoughts

aikido is used by police forces all over the world. if you want to see it in regular action then go to Japan and follow the Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police team policing units as they spend Friday and Saturday nights in Tokyo and Yokohama cleaning up drunk US Marines and Navy sailors. They don't screw around and understand the difference between dojo practice of an art and application of effective technique on the street in policing.

Just had a looksy. Seems they use a martial art called taiho justsu, literally meaning arrest technique. mixture of jujitsu and krav maga from it says.
@iatsd7 жыл бұрын
Whatever you were looking at was written by a moron then. Taihojutsu is the application side of things. Police in Japan are, by NPA regulation, required to practice either aikido, judo, or kendo. They are expressly forbidden to practice things like karate or MMA on police time. Certain special units are allowed to cross train in select other things. For example, the Special Police Reaction Unit (basically, an anti-terrorism unit) in the Tohoku region cross train in Olympic style wrestling. Krav maga? ffs... :-/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiho_Jutsu

Aikido is not used by Tokyo Riot Police. They train normal police arrest and restraint as well as normal riot training. I think you are going to defend your position by making reference to the Yoshinkan aikido course that members of the riot police attend. Well, that is only for select officers, and it isnt for learning practical techniques. It is trained for the martial spirit.

Akido Flow- You should go on Joe Rogan show. He's skeptical but I think you have a way of making it practical.
@JustShotsForMeh6 жыл бұрын
He's not skeptical, he said the truth, it's a fantastic way to keep healthy and work on your core strength, find balance and comfort in your frame, but this shit will not work in a fight, and to claim otherwise is very dangerous, he was talking to some dummy who claimed he threw guys twice his weight around, this will get you hurt BADLY, belief is the strongest metal, but ignorance is rust. The first question Rogan will ask is "Are you trying to make this practical in fighting, and if so, how are you planning to manage such a task?"
@vforvenom22996 жыл бұрын
Joe is not an educated person, he jumps on trends and just talks nonsense. The guy is a known conspiracy theorist, the fact that you listen to his stuff shows that you are pretty stupid yourself. Rogan tried to argue that Jon Jones is innocent, Rogan also has no education regarding biology and wasn't aware of sinuses in the human skull. Rogan doesn't know anything about Aikido, but he jumped on the bandwagon to hate it because many MMA fans were hating on Steven Seagal (that's where all of Rogans shit talking about Aikido starts). Rogan see's a trend in MMA fans and then he jumps on it and tells them what they want to hear.

Dear friend, after 12 years of Aikido, before seeing your solution to the first attack, I had the very exact same natural response as the solution you offer. I know that it turns into Jiujutsu (aikido without the “preserve the opponent” principle) but hey, you better stay alive. I have a question: time after time, in real life, I have noticed that bad intentioned people will slowly come really close to you before attacking. On the two occasions that this had happened to me I had decided to let them and they just didn’t attack me because of my complete lack of fear or trembling (shize included) and very cold attitude I find myself projecting naturally in such cases. This helped to avoid start of useless combat. But, if I were applying Aikido, I wouldn’t have let them come closer than two extended swords touching tips. However this would have probably caused a combat because the shamed person in front of you feels his pride provoked and thus obligation to attack from fear of them being seen as cowards. Yet in the case of extremely cruel and ruthless and strong person it is a bad idea to let them close... Please share your strategy concerning the initial approach moments, not much is being said about these crucial instances on the internet. Thanks for kind attention!
@RosssRoyce6 жыл бұрын
Ares Hera What you’re saying is the exact problem I feel, it wasn’t the right thing to do. In the first case was just a drunk but on the second case it was this dude taunting me. I entered into this “no self pity” state that Castaneda describes in the Power of Silence book, the dude in front of me started to do shifty approach like a boxer while talking shit, I didn’t make an inch back and he got trembly. I said common do what you wanna do. I could see he was afraid because when you enter no pity (you’ll prolly laugh on that) your look gets like some inhuman bird of prey or something, so I said common do what you want I know how to accept it, so the boxer dude started to say things like I’m not worthy for him to fight (lol) and went to a car. I did tell him tho, “I give you an advise, you’ll get an uppercut if you get close to some crazy fucker that close just because of your pride...” So yea, very stupid risk but at least it spared a stupid fight. Otherwise in Aikido they always tell us here (in our school) to be the ones who initiate to fight, not to wait for others initiative. As they come we false-open a side for the other to enter or lift an arm. Here they teach us both for tsuki face straight punch or for a hook to use both arms simultaneously, not unlike a sword, so this solves the problem of a stronger opponent, but you need good timing and good timing mostly works with you initiating the interaction at a certain distance, not closer. This works perfectly with typical attacks but still if it could go without a fight that’s better. Otherwise not my style to scrape the streets looking for trouble but the dude here in south of France who taught our teacher was exactly this type lol: his name was Tadashi Abe. He was amongst the last kamikazes and just as they were to send him die as a fool the war ended. He was amongst the first students of the Ueshiba dude and was sent here to France in the fifties to spread aikido. Our teachers were his first students. Aikido was extremely fast, hard and painful in this period. Tadashi Abe was a burned fuse head and to test his technique for real he’d go to bars and start fights on purpose and beat the shit out of every huge boxer. Because of this going on for some time they gave him expulsion order and and he was kicked out of the country. But came back. And restarted lol. In any case I do not follow his ideology ... Cheers and thanks for reply!

Agreed. I suffered two assault attempts in the last years and wasn't years of training or be graduated in some fighting style that avoid the brawl; i just kept my mind clean, thoughts calm, stared firmly to the attacker without any rush and wipe the "no kill" rule from my head if this turned to be my only way out. But we need to agree that i was lucky when the other guy put the knife aside and walk away droping my backpack without causing any harm (specially because theres two of them), cause even with my hand grabbing his throat, if he or his partner were more inclined to fight, i could be in trouble, or worse if theres a gun involved.

@chubbyninja8425 жыл бұрын
First, let me say that if you want to do Aikido as an art form and to continue on a tradition, that's awesome. More power to you. That said, I don't personally believe it's an effective fighting form. Bruce Lee said that a person who studies Boxing and Wrestling for a year can beat any person who has studied martial arts for 20 years. As a person who took Taekwondo lessons for a number of years as a teen, I tend to agree with him. I spent countless hours drilling katas that have ZERO application in a real fight. The moves represent moves that you could do in a real fight ... hypothetically ... but in reality there's no way they'd actually work. I spent countless hours standing in rigid stances throwing punches and kicks that, in an actual fight, would NEVER land or do any real damage. Practical application of punching and kicking only accounted for about 5% of class time. In retrospect, I can see that other 95% was a complete waste of time. I stopped attending classes a little more than a year into it because I realized that neither I nor any of the people who joined around the same time I did were really any better at fighting than when we started. We could do a bunch of cool moves and break boards but when it came down to sparing we were all just floundering. As soon as they said "fight!" all technique went right out the window because there's no way to actually hit a person while standing in a horse stance! There's a lot of absolute nonsense wrapped up in most martial arts. Take for example 1:30. The guy throws a punch and the host uses his hand to guide him around and do a bunch of stuff to him. In a real fight, nobody is going to throw a punch and just leave their hand hanging out there for their opponent to grab and do all that stuff with. The only reason the host was able to do any of that stuff is because the guy pretends to throw a punch, then freezes in place so the host can use him as a strawman. There are no strawmen in real combat.

Aikido was developed based on traditional Budo, and based on attacks of a feudal Japan with a touch of modern attacks - the reality of the founder. It not only stopped "developing" after the founder died, but also got changed to that peaceful movement (called fake) after the carnage the Japanese people suffered after WWII. Control of movement ("strawman partners") is what aikidocas use nowadays to learn the art's concepts. People often fail to understand real Aikido as a fight by looking the way it's trained - including the guy on video showing that "this is what aikido is". So yeah, comments are right Aikido is more tradition than anything nowadays, but you certainly can find people that study it deeply and now how to apply it.

I like to cross-train and see what other people are doing, so I walked in to an MMA gym. And a BJJ gym. It's a lot of fun to walk into these public seminars, pay your modest fee, and learn something new. It makes me reconsider the "how and why" of techniques I have been taken for granted. Practice doesn't make perfect - practice makes permanent and it up to us, especially at black belt level, to search out other styles and see what works for *us* as individuals.

Look up old videos of Ueshiba Sensei (O-sensei) and watch him hit people. Aikido has changed a lot over the years toward a soft practice. Parts of it work, but parts are unrealistic on the street. However, it's a fun martial art and great exercise, and can provide a lovely spiritual practice. I did it for 8 years, and I taught for 4 of those. No regrets - but I did end up moving on. P.S. THE FALLS!!! OMG, the most useful part of Aikido are the falls. I fell off a horse once and did a breakfall and it saved my neck.
