@@jemorasmussen1202 well then stop saying one art versus the other and talking how certain arts are losing their effectiveness. I’ve trained both extensively and neither of these guys is adopting a `fighting’ strategy that is reflective of the core principles of their arts. If they’re going to make big claims and put themselves forward as experts then I would expect proper expert knowledge and experience, not a no stripe purple belt who is training 6 years at most and a Karateka who, although training since birth, refuses to adapt and modernise and has lost every MMA fight he has been in. And that is the essence of Bullshido and the very reason UFC 1 was so revolutionary back in the day, it weeded out this type of nonsense. But my generation know that, unfortunately younger kids are listening to these types again.

I think BJJ is a lot of fun. It's a great way to exercise and compete without getting punch in the face. That appeals to a lot of people, myself included.
@robertmallory18772 ай бұрын
Of course Silat doesn't punch much to the face. They prefer body shots say a shovel hook to the lower ribs, extended knuckle strikes to the throat etc. Kill shots in other words and they work well against boxing which has devolved from it's effective bare knuckle days to todays glove in face. Man, even Tyson broke his hand hitting someone's head in a street fight. In the ring they wrap their hands before even putting on their gloves. Said gloves "enlarge" the hands so much you can block punches in a way that would be useless without gloves in the street!
@AnonEMoose-mr8jm8 сағат бұрын
Its not that it isn't fun its that it isn't applicable to self-defense. BJJ will get you killed in the street. Sure if you want to use BJJ to lose weight and make friends, that's fine. But if you go to the ground in a street fight, you're going to have a bunch of dudes kick you in the head or worse. The philosophy that every fight goes to the ground might be true but the fights START with both combatants standing. The dojo/training gym is not the same place as the streets. The dojo has rules and is run by civilized well meaning people. The streets are full of savages that will kill you for the last $5 in your pocket. For that SIMPLE reason, I would ask anyone that trains in BJJ to take a look at boxing, karate, or traditional Ju-Jitsu. Round out your ground game and your grappling with locks, strikes, and throws like a real martial artist so you can be prepared when you step out your front door. The mindset of the martial artist is the mindset of the warrior. Always armed and prepared for combat but not seeking conflict. Remember that martial arts are first and foremost arts of war. They are there to maim and kill your opponent. Even the Marines get some training in jujitsu's powerful wrist and arm locks that can be pulled off from a standing position. Why don't the Marines learn BJJ?

A couple takeaways for me: 1. Jesse is pretty damn good! His striking is great. He's definitely not your average karate guy. 2. When are we going to admit he's also a BJJ guy? He may not quite be blue belt level, but he's definitely high white belt level. Enough to beat a trial class guy for sure. And he's officially competed and won. 3. A big reason BJJ doesn't seem as dominant today has nothing to do with its effectiveness or "it's becoming too sport focused." It's that almost everyone that trains now knows exactly what to expect and how to defend against a lot of it. 4. Also, other arts have learned another important lesson from the early days of NHB, and that is that in order to be a good fighter you have to train like a fighter (not a martial artist). What I mean is, training conditioning, "alive" drilling, lots of sparring, and at least occasional competition (even for the hobbyist). Jesse clearly does all that in addition to his more traditional training. He also crosstrains a bunch. 5. But if you don't do any of that and think you'll "just stand up" or easily knock someone out before they can clinch, 90% of the time that fight will still go exactly like one of the old Gracie challenge fights. 😏

I like the "mountain" description at the end. I like to think that mostly (if not all) martial arts are situational. In a real fight I don't think a SINGLE martial art would be the most effective. Throwing powerful kicks might be good if you manage to keep some distance but what happens if you get knocked down? Maybe a punch to the head or a kick in the leg might knock your balance off, then what do you do next? This is the part where I think BJJ would be most useful... or maybe if you're trying to avoid a direct fight you might do some acrobatics and use some capoeira moves. Idk man, I feel like every martial art is both useful and useless at the same time. It all depends on the situation (place, time, weather, size of opponent etc)

Great video. I believe that if more martial artists, and especially karateka, would simply engage in friendly, safe sparring with minimal rules where practitioners are free to spar at all ranges (stand up, clinch, and ground), we would see far more mutual respect and far fewer petty arguments about if or why a certain style is effective. A lot of the small points that people argue about are found to be rather insignificant when people actually just spar (friendly and safe, not a fight) and don't artificially dictate at what ranges the engagement occurs.

Huge respect to Josh. I’m thinking he probably took some stick from BJJ colleagues, but he is super humble and this is a huge part of martial arts. Great fun video by two great guys. More power to you.

It’s videos like this that remind me why I love MMA so much. It’s beautiful because it shows you all sorts of different cultures and martial arts types, prepares you for a whole plethora of different situations, and just like any other martial arts, it’s great exercise. What’s great though is like obviously, take someone who does MMA to a karate tournament or a BJJ tournament, and they’ll do alright, probably not as good as people trained in those specific arts, but it’s great to have a decent understanding of many situations, as street fighting tends to find. God, I love martial arts.

I was #1 ranked M1 blue belt in the world in IBJJF in both feather and lightweight for 2023-2024 with over 70 tournaments in 2 years, including 2nd at Master Worlds, and multiple first place wins at the Master International tournaments in Europe and North America. Most recently in 2024, I was lightweight winner at the IBJJF Asia Championship in Japan. I was promoted a few months ago to purple belt by Greg Sirico of Odyssey Jiu Jitsu and also just recently won IBJJF Sacramento at purple belt middleweight.
@marco108322 ай бұрын
but can’t take down a karateka? What does blue belt mean to you? To the old heads and some new masters blue means your BJJ vs non BJJ will win in the most safe and efficient way possible. No disrespect Josh you’d roll me like sushi but dude you got seriously handled in the first 2 rounds.

The second round, where he states: “I guess the result of this one is inconclusive”, that’s disingenuous. He’d been punched in the face many, many times at this point. In a real fight, with no gloves, and real striking intent, his face would have been turned into pulp by this point.

What an interview between two well-respected masters from different martial arts! Shortcut to the interview at 13:48, but I would advise not to skip their incredible sparring sessions. The insights shared were profound, making this one of the best martial arts lessons I’ve ever experienced. The words spoken by Master Jesse Enkamp between 18:02 and 18:20 should become a quote! These words truly resonated with me and encapsulate the essence of martial arts philosophy.

Really interesting to here about the Okinawan-Chinese connection towards ground fighting as nowadays most Chinese ground fighting martial arts point only to "dog style". Could be mistaken but did Jesse refer to this Chinese ground fighting style as ShíShù (or ShíJitsu) [ 实术 ]? I'd be really interested in knowing more as I'm trying to investigate on Chinese ground fighting! @KARATEbyJesse

I think it was shown in one of his specials Karate Nerd in China, possibly under the name Fuzhou, dog boxing
@mckendrick76722 ай бұрын
Pretty sure he said it in Japanese as "chijutsu" 「ちじゅつ」「地術」which would be "dìshù" in Mandarin or literally "Ground Techniques" in English.

This was highly entertaining.Thanks guys! I have trained karate (primary martial art - black belt in shotokan) but I have also trained Muay Thai and BJJ and they all have a place. As a smaller woman, I look at what works, when. Pick the best for the situation. I have moved provinces and am doing some Goju Ryu as a while belt now. The learning curve is a little different and I'm being corrected on things that were "correct" in other styles. For instant, back heel is expected to be grounded yet when I trained in Thailand they kicked the bottom of my heel to get it higher! But I love it all. Your final message is spot-on!

I love how these guys are respecting each other and laughing at each others styles at the same time. This is the kind of camaraderie that all martial artists should have. This is how we all learn from each other. We all become better by showing this kind of respect for each others styles.

That’s some of what makes Jesse so great. Balance is very important. Being well rounded and capable in many things is preferable to being exceptionally good at a singular task. People often forget the entire quote of “Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than a master of one”. Seeing things from different perspectives can give you insight you’d otherwise never have access to. I’m not sure what the Okinawan equivalent of the quote is, but I’m certain there is one and Jesse knows it by heart (and likely in its native language). Even things you may have a disdain for can teach you something. Anyway, my apologies for rambling, I will end my comment with a second quote that may better illustrate my perspective. “Once in a while, you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right”.

I think people take Jesse too seriously. He has respect for every martial art and likes to make jokes. But he also knows that there is no true one size fits all art. Everything has a weakness. Including Karate.
