In this video, I talk about some ideas for Jo Suburi training indoors. Even with limited space there are options.
The Aiki-Jo developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei) is a method of using Japanese staff techniques to teach the principles of Aikido.
There are 20 basic staff movements which form part of the Iwama Ryu syllabus. These were developed by Morihiro Saito for solo practice with a Jo (4ft Staff).
In this video I cover a direct middle level thrust (Choku zuki) and a reversed thrust (Kaeshi zuki) from the thrusting suburi series (Tsuki no bu). I also talk about high thrusts.
I hope you find the video useful and as always if you have any questions leave them in the comments below. :)

I forgot to mention I am using a foam Jo it this video. Another thing to consider when training inside to reduce the risk of breaking things!

Another excellent tutorial Alex. What I like also is that the confined space actually helps to prevent bad habits with movement.

More useful and interesting stuff! I wondered what your thoughts were on tsuki without sliding the front hand? more similar to a spear thrust? The only place I’ve seen this in aikido is Chiba sensei. Did some experimenting on a training dummy and I seem to generate a quicker and more powerful thrust without sliding the hands, perhaps losing some accuracy. May just be my poor aikido technique of course!

Thanks Loci! So I see it like that for a couple of reasons. 1. It helps understand transitions from other moves and build an understanding of where the centre of the Jo is. 2. It teaches how to connect your Jo to your centre. If you watch some arts that don't do this with the staff, the power is often driven by the arms. However you can apply it without the slide and get a more powerful and faster thrust if you apply the same feeling as with the slide, but without letting it slide! It is done in Iwama style but just not shown as often as it maybe classed as "advance" . If you watch Dan Toutain Sensei, he demonstrates it in some of his videos. So in answer to you question, I think it's good to do, if you already know how to do a good sliding thrust. They a both good for different circumstances.
