I love this scene for one reason. It has nothing to do with sexuality, it has everything to do with being in love with someone so much so that it hurts. Lilly tried to love others, but only Felice could connect with her on every level. You can tell that this was something Lilly had been looking for all her life.This scene shows all of the emotional highs and lows of being in love with that person you connect with so strongly that it drives you mad when they aren't there or you feel that they are hiding something from you. Kohler's performance was just the right amount of despair, anger, grief, sarcasm, and longing that while I was watching this the first thing that came to mind was "Holy Shit!, that was me in 2011." If anything, this scene also shows how true, deep love transcends every stereotype we place on each other whether it be sexual, racial, religious, political, or cultural.

My translation: Lilly: There you are! She is there. My little kitty-cat is there.. You’re really cold. I.. I have tea.. wait. Felice: Why weren’t you in the basement? L: I couldn’t. I was somehow.. paralysed? F: You were what? Paralysed? … And the children? L: The little ones are in the basement and the big ones are gone… Evacuated. Only I’m here. I’m always here.. … How are Ilse and Claire? F: I don’t know. L: Sit down, Felice. Yesterday in the basement someone said, “Life has its justice: first come the bombs, then the coffee beans.” Typical Berlin, yeah?.. … Where were you all this time? F: With friends. L: Do I know them? F: No. … L: Who do you think you are?! I wait every day. Every second I wait for you. I don’t even know if you’re alive! But now you are here.. Don’t look at me like that! I’ve asked myself a thousand questions, and now I understand. I understand that there is always something I’m kept in the dark about! .. Felice, how dumb do you think I am, really? A little trophy over here, an adventure over there. Do you think I haven’t seen how you all look at me? A pitiful glance in the bookcase. Well I know who I am… and I would be happy if I could tell you that I didn’t love you. Now you’re going, yeah? A quick look at the destitution and then run away, yeah? I would do everything for you my girl; everything! But laugh at me, laugh? That I won’t allow! I’m so dumb, Felice. Also with Günther and Ernst and all of them. I always thought, that if I only believed strongly enough and fought for it, it would someday come true. So much effort has to eventually pay, right? But I don’t feel him. Like the others. Every time I thought, He’ll be the one and then everything will make sense. I could look at them and then say, that’s why love exists. But nothing. Nothing. And then you came, Felice. My answer. The answer. I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Felice. I didn’t want this to happen. I’m sorry. Forgive me. Forgive me. F: I’m Jewish, Lilly. L: What.. are you? F: The worst was when my mother died. That was long ago. But since then I never felt safe. Only with you. L: How.. how can you love me? F: I’ve tried not to. L: Felice.. don’t ever leave me!

I think Schrader was perfect for the film. The point of this movie was not to make another film about the 'plight' of being gay. It wasn't to make a statement on homosexuality- that's done in every other gay movie. The point was to tell the story about two women who feel in love in a tragic time period. This wasn't just a movie about Felice. It was about Lilly, too, whether you like her or find her annoying and naive.

@@ifuseekamy4056 It used to be on Netflix. Idk if they brought it back though. The first time I saw it was on either IFC or Sundance many years ago in June (Pride month) of that year and there were subtitles. I’ve seen it a few times on there and once on Netflix with sub titles. I don’t speak German and only know a few words but at this point I know the movie. Though I wish I spoke German to see and feel it as authentically as possible.

@arrant972 M. Schrader stole my heart in this role. I didn't think she acted straight. When I was studying her character( for a paper) both my friends and I made comments about her love for the ladies. As for her hairstyle, I don't know enough to comment. An attempt to portray all the events influencing Felice's life would be too difficult. There was just too much going on. So, I just read the book for the details. A remake? Nah, gotta disagree. Schrader perfected it to well for me. ;)

@arrant972 Sorry, I ran outta room. It isn't very often that I watch a film or read a book that affects me emotionally. If I walk away from a movie feeling entertained then I'm satisifed. This one did more than that. It wasn't so much that I was entertained but moved. Its hard to explain.
@sqeeks8314 жыл бұрын
@arrant972 - Felice had to fool a LOT of people. She took risks but wasn't stupid. She isn't going to broadcast her sexuality and call attention to herself. I don't see her acting butch in front of anyone but her close circle of friends. Maybe I'm bias. I just loved this movie and am a bit twiterpated( think Bambi!) over Maria Schrader. There were so many scenes where I smiled and thought "Omg, she sooo hot!"

@arrant972 A remake would be the love story all over again with a different cast and a different take. If you want homosexuality in that time period, then you're going to have to focus on someone who was trying to publicize her sexuality at that time. And furthermore, many, many, many times, lesbians were ONLY 'obviously' gay in very private settings, i.e. their homes or underground bars.

@arrant972 - If you are wanting a move about FS's early life then you're bound to be disappointed with Farbebock. As you mentioned this one concentrates on her love affair with Lilly and capture by the SS. If someone was to attempt a film about FS's life story, it would be a dfferent movie with a different focus. I'd see it, even if M. Schrader wasn't the main character... sigh.. :)
