Tammi Terrell (born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery), like Marvin Gaye, died too young. She died a month before her 25th birthday in 1970. She would be 71 today. She was involved with James Brown for two years. The relationship ended after he started hitting her. She endured eight surgeries for a brain tumor that kept coming back. At the end of her life, she was blind, confined to a wheelchair, lost her hair, and weighed 93 pounds. Her angry mother refused to let anyone from Motown attend Tammi's funeral because the label had pushed Tammi to perform, even when she had severe headaches and other symptoms of the tumor. She collapsed on stage, and Marvin helped her get offstage. Marvin was the only one from Motown allowed to attend Tammi's funeral because her mom felt he was a good friend to her daughter. Tammi was cute, talented and smart -- a pre-med major in college. To have her life cut short is tragic. R.I.P., Tammi and Marvin. You are singing together again.

This song touches my heart in so many was..I had a boyfriend at 16yrs old...high school sweethearts...We broke up.. I went on and had a new boyfriend and married him...a year later when I moved away with my new husband, I found out that my ex boyfriend committed suicide. When we were together he always told me how this was his top #1 song...I think of him a lot and my heart cries that things in his life were so bad he had to end his life...This song for me with always hold a special spot in my heart for him. RIP Robert..you are loved still and missed so much. I just wish I could talk to you one more time.

Tami and Marvin were marvelous together. Their chemistry together was awesome. It's difficult to believe they weren't in love. Marvin comes alive with pleasure when he performs with her. He doesn't show that 'in love' feeling when he's performing with other performers. Is is true that Tami was in a relationship with one of The Temptations? And he hurt her which resulted in a brain concision which lead to her death? Her death was too soon in her life. RIP Tami.

The union of them two born out of pure love for music. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell loved each other , not romantically or sexually but platonically they confided in each other just by being their for each other. + Hannah Obsiye its a shame they didn't marry they may both be alive . They would have been anchors for each other and maybe Marvin would never went to " taking the shit " to start with . I don't know enough about Tammi's personal life to say anything but saw a comment that David Ruffin and James Brown both were maybe married or dated her and beat her. Oddly both Brown and Ruffin were hooked on " the shit " also . Honestly , I don't think as much as Marvin probably wasn't a sort to take shit from anyone as far as guys goes but he doesn't look like the type to take advantage of a woman like that .
