growing up in the Philippines, we had yearly Choral Singing Contest, everyone with no exception participates, each section compete, there was a yearly theme examples: OPM, Christmas, Abba, Apo Hiking, Movie Theme Songs, English, of course, we have dancing competition,: ballroom, folk dance, modern, there was cheering competition, (everyone is required to participate as well), oratorical contest, singing contest, beauty contest, we also have United Nations Day, parade of nations, representatives wear national costume of assigned country, this was fun! I was suprised to learn that all these were not a norm in other schools and other countries.

I used to be an English, Math and Science teacher in the Philippines. And for my motivation/ice breaker/starter/energizer, I used popular song to change its lyrics related to topic/lesson. It was fun to watch kids participating -singing/dancing. It's not every day that I would do this, but one thing is for sure that this kind of strategy will help the students remember the lessons. :-)

And there are level ups of this where instead of just one class, all the classes at that grade level will perform in the grounds (football field). I think we called them grounds demonstration. Each grade level competes with each other. Imagine hundreds and in some schools thousands dancing and singing together to a choreography. There is just so many practices in the Philippines that encourages (actually compelled) singing and dancing. And that is part of how you end up with concert crowds on pitch, on rhytmn and even prison yard choreographed dancing that is actually quite excellent.

And that is why filipinos are good performers. Coz we all learn it in some way, may it be in school or at home. We are exposed to the performing arts. 😆 Then it carries over to our adult lives coz we are also expected to know how to perform during corporate events and parties. Heck, even team building events will have some sort of performance battle.😁

I come from a family of teachers, 5/6 of my maternal aunts are educators, and I know that pinoy teachers will do their utmost to get the lessons more enjoyable for students. One way to get them enthusiastic about school and get them in their best mindset to learn is to hype them with a bit of dancing and singing.

2:21 The Physical Education or now (since 2023 and onwards) Physical Education and Health / Physical and Health Education / Health and Physical Education within or as a part or component of MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) school subject or program in the Philippines isn't just about movement development, fitness development, exercises, games, sports, lifestyle management, and indoor and/or outdoor recreations or recreational activities, but also rhythmic activities and dances. That's just with one of our mandatory or compulsory school subejcts or courses from Grade 1 or from Grade 4 to Grade 10 or to Grade 12, and that doesnt include yet the other times and places when and where we also are "asked" or "need" to move, dance, and generally perform for our academic grades, co-curricular and/or extra-curricular school or school-related activities and programs, or other school or school-related activities, programs, events, celebrations, occassions, or holidays, like school feasts/fiestas/festivals, fairs, parades, parties, camps or campings, workshops, seminars, intramurals or sports day/days/week, foundation day, family day, teachers' day, and the like. Also, this doesn't end in high school or secondary school, because Physical Education is also a mandatory or compulsory course or coirse subject for all undergraduate, bachelor, or baccalaureate degrees in colleges, universities, and other higher educational institutions throughout the Philippines. It's a total of 8 units of 4 semesters of physical education with 2 units each seemster, and one of the semester course or course subject focuses on rhythmic activities and dances. Dancing and generally performing for our academic grades, co-curricular and/or extra-curricular school or school-related activities and programs, or other school or school-related activities, programs, events, celebrations, occassions, or holidays are also exisitng in colleges, universities, and other higher educational institutions throughout the Philippines. These dancing and generally performing even extends into the world of work, mostly depending on the more specific career, industry, profession, vocation, or job one is in.

Schools in the Philippines have Foundation Days. All grades perform en masse, I remember doing baton twirling, folk dance and modern dance. That's every year. And of course there's singing contests especially during Linggo ng Wika where Tagalog songs reign supreme. PE in elementary includes learning folk dances. In college there's also dancing for PE. I used to think that it's normal all over the world, but I guess it isn't.

We always look up on the ways kids and adults should be learning. You are right that people who are so serious and calm should also dance and sing, or enjoyable actitvities at schools, because when they finish and start to work, they can apply these activities in their lives, especially now that some work/jobs are confined in one corner.

Yes, if you grew up in the Philippines, you have to go through at least 1competition in your life. There's no option and because that's normal for us, even if we're not great singers and dancers you can perform to save your life. LOL

During the 80's I always tried to follow the dance steps of some dancers guested in a noon time show. Then one time I jumped and hit the 2X4 wood of the 2nd floor of our house. Sooo painful! 😮😅
